It's a vague memory and its been a while, but if I recall correctly the characterisation was actually pretty good.

 

I know the story you're talking about. Vague memories of Hiruzen being subordinate to Orochimaru (but he is still leader of Konoha, Orochimaru leads the 'awesome' Sound Village). I think that ninja techniques were also quite hard to come by and people like Kakashi were not nearly as good as they are in the original - drunk layabouts!

I think it either stopped or I stopped reading somewhere around a rousing speech or sentiment originating with Naruto to bring pride back to the village.

That'll be it, now I know why I didn't find it - was only looking at stuff published between 2007 and 2010 or so!

YMMV, but apart from some clichés, it is refreshingly different from the usual Naruto fare. It fleshes out village politics and the general background of the world, throws an Eldritch abomination and magic into the plot, and has decent grammar. It's also over 500.000 words long and updates more or less regularly. So if you have nothing better to do and time to waste, it might be worth a look.

 

It's been awhile since I read that, but remember some things. Chiefly:

*The Eldritch Abomination is a thinly veiled Self-Insert/Mary-Sue, who immediately takes residence in Naruto's seal...and becomes the now turned Goddess!Kyuubi's husband.

*Speaking of, Fem!Kyuubi immediately expresses regret, blah, blah, blah. *Begins to raise/train Naruto in a mindscape where time passes faster than the outside world*

*Hinata become Naruto's friend and later girlfriend and can somehow enter Eldritch Abomination and Kyuubi's and Naruto Mindscape/Metaphysical plane

*All the children Naruto's age somehow know what's best for the village, because the adults are idiots and running things wrong.

*Karin becomes obsessed with...Kiba?!

*Other stupid plot points here.

Yeah, definitely YYMV on this.

Yes... That story is terrible.

In addition to the bullshit listed above, there's a lot of moments like this:

I wouldn't even put this in the almost recommended thread, tbh.

The writing isn't actually that bad, and the first chapter of the story seems mildly interesting... But it gets exponentially worse the longer you read.

 

Oh yes, I forgot to put in the Bullet Point/Star about how Minato was at "Dumbles," level of Manipulation. Kushina was mildly better, but would be the typical sycophantic McGonagall in that comparison.

Note, when I say Dumbles, I mean the way many subpar authors tend to portray/bash Dumbledore as, not how I actually see him.

 

I feel sorry that you even had to read to that. At least the silver lining is you've saved some of us the agony.

 

Eh, fair enough. I never said it was of the quality of a Patriot's Dawn, but it was a time waster and I had nothing better to do at that time. Perhaps I can just better ignore the bad parts and focus more on the interesting bits than you guys do.

 

If a story has parts that you need to ignore in order to read it, I'd suggest posting it in the Almost Recc'd thread, rather than in a thread for the best of the fandom.

That said, are there actually new quality stories that do not rehash canon? I've been trying to find something completely different in Naruto fandom, like Uzushio rising from the ashes or something in that vein, and I haven't found anything that's not utterly bad.

 

Are there are any quality Otogakure!Naruto fics?
Because whatever you say about Orochimaru, but he is really cool character who at one point was able to create his own ninja village and that takes some talent and skill.

Actually, where the hell all of his Oto ninja that attacked Konoha came from if all he had were some underground bases?

 

There's a village in Rice Fields Country. The place where Orochimaru was waiting for Sasuke's arrival was his 'home' somewhere inside Otogakure. So most of his shinobi are probably inside Oto rather than all the various bases he has. Dunno what happens to them though since they only appear for the invasion and when Sasuke beat an army of them PTS.

Anyway, the only Otogakure!Naruto fic I know of that isn't outright terrible is Cursed Demon: Kaibutsu Akebono .
