    Re: triggers

Seriously, guys? It's just a fucking courtesy. You know, sort of the same way authors list pairings in the summary. Certainly, most here appreciate any warning that clicking a link could lead to reading about two penis-owners engaging in physical affection.

Obviously, people like to have a reasonable idea about a story's contents investing time in it. As I would bet that more people read fanfiction for entertainment than to relive past trauma, I don't see how this is a big deal at all.

These disclaimers don't apply to you? That's dandy. But cut the macho bullshit.

The point isn't that you shouldn't warn people of graphic content in a story, it's how thoroughly unhelpful the warning "triggers" is. It doesn't give any insight into what kind of trauma may be present in the story forcing a potential reader to open the story and read to see if it would upset them or not. Warnings should be more explicit about the contents.

It's not that people put it there as a warning against potential trauma, it's the fact that people who do put 'could trigger' in their summaries are doing the equivalent of screaming shrilly for attention while wanking furiously on their angstboner. Nine times out of ten you'll be able to tell the story is a flaming wad of sphincter pus without an author's pretentious inclusion of the term in any case.

If 'could trigger' is something an author feels compelled to add to their summary, you're almost guaranteed the story will lack any semblance of quality. The use of the term betrays the attitude of 'woe is me', because no one else can understand the pain of the person flicking their dyed fringe over their eyes and sighing forlornly at their oh so fucking terrible life.

"Well, I've raped/beaten/abused/etc my character for the nth time, better add another trigger warning. Boy, my readers must really care about this OC now."

Nevermind the fact that these so called triggers are portrayed in such a blatantly ridiculous fashion that they're almost outright insulting to people who have genuinely suffered through the real thing.

Macho bullshit my well sculpted arse.

Fucking unreasonably irritated by this whole trigger thing.

Would you say it's triggered an adverse emotional response?

...Sorry; I know that was terrible.

Wait does the story in question literally just say " trigger warning" and fuckall else?

Because that's attention getting unhelpful bullshit.

If it's in the summary that's utterly useless. Put it in an authors note at the beginning, say what's actually triggering.

Lots of very good stories do that. Hell, Renegade Cause did that and I wouldn't call that story angstwankery.

It doesn't have to say "tw" or anything like that, it's just "hey, the next chapter contains sexual assault/child abuse/rape/whatever." That, I find would be hard to disparage.

Shitty angsty fics that put "could trigger emotional trauma!!!" in the summaries? Yeah, fuck those ones.

The first time you see a mom, sister, s.o., or spouse get up and leave the theater because what's going on is too much to take just then, you get a sense of empathy for this kind of thing. If you haven't experienced this, consider yourself fortunate.

I think the trigger thing has been played out. Can we move on?

On topic - yet another oneshot that I liked:

Loss of Parental Care - "Sixth year: Harry finds a crying first year in the corner. If there is one thing in the world that he understands, it is the feeling of having lost his parents. He tries to help."

I'm really enjoying this one, at ch 13 right now. I can see how this fic wouldn't be library worthy (personally I don't mind bastard!Dumbledore in AUs but I'm starting to see why DLPers consider it cliche). A bit unpolished but the characterizations are decent, everything comes together plotwise
though the time travel bits are silly and convoluted
and I personally like the exposition regarding magical theory. I'd say 3.5/5 overall.

    I'm in Chapter 1 but...

If that is Snape, I am going to kill someone.

Everything else looks okay right now.

If it was Snape, I'd have clicked on the bright red icon. Fortunately, it isn't Snape.

Okay, let me preface this by saying that I don't know if this belongs in WTF fics (I doubt it), this thread (seems most appropriate), or a new thread for fics that are awesome in their own way but will never get into the library for one reason or another. I figure, however, that I should put it here for lack of another suitable place.

I will say only this: it is the best story of its kind.

    ^^

    Very funny, asshat.

To counter your "joke" with a *really* enjoyable HG/SS fic, I present:

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2290003/1/Pet-Project

This is not some freaking Pedo!Bear fic, btw. It is actual romance, with flawless technical writing and a nearly perfect tension arc.

    Link please Noxed.

Edit: I read the first chapter, and well it was meh. I did not like how Dumbledore folds to Snape because he did a mistake years ago by not punisihing Sirius.

For Hermione/Snape recommendations, here's my two cents.

    Unfinished Business » by Ramos
Hermione Granger dies in a potions accident during her final year at Hogwarts. She's not thrilled when she comes back as a ghost, and really not happy at the idea of spending eternity haunting Severus Snape's classroom. This story is being reposted.

I found the first chapter pretty annoying and shitty. The whole thing just grated, with the excess of exposition, Dumbledore at his most ineffectual and apologetic, and Hermione more concerned about her jerkass teacher than her best friend of six years.

I avoid Snape/anything, especially Snape/Hermione - but I read this one by mistake after using a buggy filter and failing to read a description. And it was really interesting, well done and without the feeling that author may be dangerous after encountering romance.

Only 13 k so far but solid writing and this is the first "House of Cards" type HP Fic I've seen. I think it works so far.

EDIT: Since I started reading it's now at 17k
