Been awhile since I checked on X and Y.

So, basically some pokemon can go Super Saiyan now?

Exactly... I wonder if this makes them all have a forced second type of Fighting, would be stupid... but I'd like it anyways.

From what I've heard so far, this is my udnerstanding:

Mega-Evolution requires a hold item called the Mega Stone. Pokemon transform on switch-in.

Mega-Evolution pokemon get new abilities in these forms. These potentially replace your existing ability. Kangaskhan gets parental bond, which makes all attacks act as though they were double hit. So, yes, I do think this means double giga imapct. No attack penalty, presumably, though the details of any downsides to the ability haven't been stated. In the trailer it showed Kangaskhan one-shotting - hell, what do I need to say it for?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjzxXUPt4DY

So I personally believe that you cannot have scrappy on a mega Kangaskhan, which is the trade off. Mawile gets Huge Power. Mewtwo gets something that replaces pressure. Et cetera. It's still not known if there any stat raises from mega form, or just this single new ability.

Kangaskhan's ability is pretty exciting, because, nevermind giga impact, but any move that can inflict status, now has a double chance to (like dizzy punch). I don't think this effects non-attack moves, but it would be fun if you could double work up in a turn.

Also, I'm generally a crazy person. I'm excited about 2v2 battles, where I can skill swap parental bond onto Mewtwo or something.

Of the ones released so far, only Blaziken does. Bampharos adds /Dragon and Mawile adds /Fairy, for example.

Wasn't Mawile retconned to being Fairy anyway?

Yeah, it's really confusing how mega evolution works in regards to type. Ampharos's third form might just be retconned to electric/dragon? Or maybe he'll be only /dragon in mega form. I don't know how Blaziken is going to work, either, because he's not getting a new ability in mega form? Does that mean his mega form buffs his stats or give him access to a unique move?

Yeah, I didn't mean that it gained the ability, just that it had/still had it

Meh, seems more like a Super Saiyan power up, then a digivolution. While the main character's digimon in the series only digivlove temporarily, there are digimon who had permanently digivolved. (You know, unless their code gets damaged and they revert to an egg)

For Megatwo, Insomnia doesn't seem like much of an improvement over Pressure. Mega Absol's Magic Bounce is pretty cool though.

Still not as cool as MegaKhan.

But it seems you can only get Mega Blaziken through Nintendo Network?

I'd like to know if every Pokemon will be able to do it. If not, how do they choose? And they said that the Megastones are species-specific. Will Megaevolutions be confined to fully evolved Pokemon that cannot evolve anymore (i.e. no Caterpie or Kakuna Megaevolution, But Butterfree and Beedrill get one), or will there be one for every single Pokemon?

I will give it credit that it's a chance to rebalance some Pokemon and make some of the weaker ones more competitive in the metagame. It's entirely possible that some of the shittier Pokemon that no one ever uses, like Farfetche'd or Mr. Mime might have extremely powerful or useful Megaevolutions that make them competitive because people will want to Megaevolve them in a fight.

I'd like Megaevolution a whole lot more as a mechanic, though, if it carried some weakness or drawback, like a double-edged sword. So far, there doesn't seem to be any reason not to use Megaevolution every battle on your strongest Pokemon.

It's not winning bonus points for forcing the newgen ascetic on oldgen Pokemon, either. Even you guys who like it or don't mind it have to admit that some of these look really crappy. Jesus Christ, just look what they did to Blaziken and Lucario.

Dafuq? I've always thought Blaziken looked fucking kick-ass. the new look I'm not sure on, but I don't think it's that bad.

It's not bad, but it's not good, either. It doesn't look like Blaziken evolved again. It looks like somebody decided to redraw Blaziken using the new art style. It's kind of the same with Lucario, and even Mewtwo.

The don't look like evolutions. They look like reimaginings. That feels lazy to me. And I don't like the ascetic, so they're running an uphill battle to begin with.

I don't think ascetic is the word you're looking for. Aesthetic.

Autocorrect has betrayed my trust. I must now hunt it down and destroy it to preserve my honor.

Also, the jokes are already starting.

Personally, the only Mega Evolution I don't like the appearance of is Mewtwo. While some a couple of em I don't necessarily prefer more than their regular look, they're not bad either. About the same, really, so I could go for either look.

As a 'negative', I could see the mega-stones, which appear to be species specific, being consumable. You get one battle in mega-form, but that's it, you need another stone after that. Like berries.

Or, to go along with the flying battles, a pokemon could only megavolve if the opponent has one that could, or they belong to a gym leader. I think this one less likely, however, because it seems daft to introduce a new sort of pokemon that can only compete amongst itself.
