@Snorkack: Don't forget Jeyne Poole died too! It's a shame that Ned Stark Lives became a bit of a parody of itself, but I'm still curious to see how it ends. It's kind of an interesting study in what ASOIAF could have been like with character shields.

At least it looks like Dany is going to get off her ass in Mereen and leave all those filthy worthless slaves to die. Between the books, the TV show, and The North Remembers it feels like she's been camped out there for the past three decades.

The Knights of Summer. Not for Stannis fans. It's decent, so far (I'm only a few chapters in), and it even uses an idea I thought to use myself. It could use a beta though.

Pretty nice fic. The best thing is that the author is keeping the story-line simple. It is based mostly on characters, not going too much into harshness and grittiness of asoiaf world. That remains in the background. There are no tragedies except at the very start, and that too for few people, who like a certain Mannis guy. Characters stick mostly to their canon version, except, Renly, too a certain extent.

I don't like how the things are going too well for Starks ( I have already prepared for a BAM! moment somewhere along the line, but it doesn't seem likely). Apart from couple of other small issues; like Davos' son and Cat's overly loaded worries about rupturing Renly's relation to North due to that boy, it was solid.

I am really interested as to where things would go from here. What would be Robb's decision and perhaps a couple of chapters from his pov.

I agree. It's a good story but the Lannisters are just getting the crap kicked out of them.

Meh. The first chapter/prologue ends with "they were the knights of Summer and Winter was Coming." Stannis thinking that at his deathbed is utterly absurd. Did not read more.

Stannis is the Lord's chosen, his mere sword-swallower of a brother cannot hope to best him!

"Sword-swallower" heh, I see what you did there.

Read a couple of chapters, it's not bad and miles better than the mob style modern Au's and bad smut that seem to dominate everything lately, can't say I approve much of Renly doing what he did. But my biggest complaint is that things are going too good for the Starks and that irritates me far more than anything else.
In short good, but I feel that the Starks are getting a free ticket and I don't think that'll change, don't I'll follow it for terribly long because of that.

As an aside outside of a "Better Fate" are there any more Jon Snow as a squire or even Bran as a squire fics? got a weird hankering for a Northerner growing up and acclimatizing tot he South.

So I've been reading 'Love and Honour'. I like it enough to keep reading. It's not particularly exciting, but it is consistent, with no extreme highs or lows, if you get me.

I do wonder though, did the author pull Jon Snow's parentage out of his arse? Last I remember there was no canon confirmation beyond a few probable guesses.

I've been reading them as they've been released, So my memory of them might be fuzzy. I'm finding them, especially In Good Company to be a bit of an angst-fest. A little annoyingly so, actually. But other than that they're more than good enough to keep me reading.

In Good Company is a bit angsty but still a very good read. It manages to keep Stannis likable by preserving his most redeeming qualities and making him a really interesting character who stands to his convictions in an absolute way.

Only point of critique would be, through this rather limited POV, that we are unable to see the impact on the other, equally interesting characters, like Jaime, Tyrion and so on. Liked the relationship with Arya. Overall, pretty solid story.

Ummm.... isn't the entire ASoIaF saga a bit of an angst fest?

    In relative terms? Hell no.
My point was more specific though. I was getting the feeling that half of Stannis's POV is 'Why doesn't my bwuther wove me????'. He steps away from being the Mannis we all know he can be. But the real angsty part is how everyone is actually telling him his emotional shortcomings and to have a little more love and faith in his brothers.
As opposed to canon Stannis who doesn't think twice about all that crap.

Canon Stannis is also a huge hypocrite who betrays his vows left and right while condemning people for betraying theirs, so, like this portrayal of him who actually gives a damn about his family.

Yeah, all the Stannis love never sat very well with me. Then again I think R'hllor is 101% mafia so that might have something to do with my general annoyance with him.
