I thought it was generally accepted that Ash gets Obliviated every time he leaves a region?.

You are now aware of how Lt Surge is one of the few men below retirement age in the original pokemon, you know the age Ash/Gary/Misty all their generations fathers would be... if any of them actually had fathers.



Pokemon takes place right after a massive war, that's why all the kids are running around on their own. There's nobody to tell them otherwise, the men are pretty much all dead and the women have taken over the workforce (Jenny/Joy).
