Chris Roberts, the creator of the WingCommander 3 and Freelancer finally showed his new project: Star Citizen.

It is a new space Sim based on the Crytek 3 engine with a lot of similarities to Freelancer (A single Player campaign with open world at the end) and it will also offer Multiplayer/Koop. It is PC only with no Abo or free to play either. More info is available on his site.

In the moment he is still searching for Investors but I really hope that this gets real.. I hoped for such a game since my early childhood and he is one of the few who I would trust with something like that.

It's gone up on Kickstarter, and in the last... day-ish it's gotten 250k. Nowhere near project Eternity, but still doing really well

 

Well it already raised over 1 million on his website so he will get his first( and most important) goal of 2 million easily. I think 3-4 million are possible which would mean that he could develop a great game.

 

It is nearing the end (1 day to go) and looks like it could even top the 5mil.
Currently it has: $4,684,048

There have a been a lot of updates and most of it looks really promising. I still fear that he wants too much (things like Boarding) but even if only half of what he wants gets made it will be a really interesting game.

 

The crowd funding was mainly to interest investors, which he's managed. He actually has more than the 12 million he really needed to do everything secured last I heard.

 

See, this is interesting to me. I never thought of Kickstarter being for "Shut up and take the damn money" as well as "Shut up and take my money." I mean it's really fucking obvious in hindsight, but, well, sometimes I'm really fucking stupid and shortsighted.

 

I'd be throwing my money at my screen right now, but I'm too busy imagining the fun that could be had on a DLP server. Raven could get a carrier and we could all launch from it and conquer the known universe.

The game is apparently slated for a 2014 release. 2013 is gonna be a looooong year.

Let's see:

- Community modding, with the potential for mod approval for the official game
- Frequent micro-updates, promising an ever-expanding universe
- Single or multiplayer, roughly the same way Freelancer handled things
- Multiplayer ships (there's apparently one heavy fighter that has a launchable smaller fighter that your friend can pilot
- More hands-on ship combat (instead of EVE Online's auto targeting) and what looks to be a completely kickass physics system
- No subscription fee

I want it! I want it so much!

 

I pledged for this. So damn excited to get in on alpha and beta action, homigosh.

30 minute interview with Chris Roberts

TotalBiscuit sat down for an interview with Roberts, and I'm really liking how optimistic he is about the game. The interview itself was less flat out informative and more reassuring.

Just FYI, it's griefing, not grieving. Grieving is being in mourning when a beloved person has died. Griefing is being a dick to other players for the sake of being a dick.
