Especially in the previous episode when they swinging across the elevators. Is Laurel actually Black canary in the comics?

Because if she isn't there is still hope that we can get a better actress to be Ollie's main love interest.

Does anyone else feel bad for Tommy? He died having everyone he knew and trusted betraying him. At least he kept true to himself in the end and U think that he died a better man than Oliiver

 

Great season finale. When I started watching this I was just expecting some superhero fun for 10 or so episodes before it got canceled. But Arrow is a refreshing change from shows like Smallville, where they would have played out Malcolm being the villian for a good 4-5 seasons with villian of the week episodes to fill up seasons. Then of course Malcolm would be either redeemed or left on the show escaping capture and death forever.

I think it took 5 or so episodes before I was hooked, but since then it's definitely been highish on my show priority list.

Tommy dying was a good plot point. It gives Oliver a reason to keep fighting instead of a couple episodes ago when he said stopping Malcolm was his goal and then he could "Give up the hood". A show that isn't afraid to kill main characters is a show that I can fall in love with and hate at the same time.

 

Well, her full name in the show is actually Dinah Laurel Lance, but everyone calls her Laurel. So yes, I'd say it's safe to say that she is Black Canary.

 

Arrow for the win! Can't wait till Season 2 comes on, and how they build Roy Harper up.

 

Time to necro this thread, because this show just came back tonight, and it came back strong. If the show maintains its quality - and I'm sure it will, minus a shitty episode here or there - this is going to be a damn fine season 2.

It played all the right cards this week. Fucking all of them. I can't think of a single part of the episode I thought was a mistake. Goddamn.

 

Was thinking of bumping to say the same thing. I don't know if they had this planned all along or they simply listened to the fans, but this is pretty much the exact direction I wanted the show to go, right down to the grappling hook arrow.

 

Want Ollicity. Now.

 

Judging by that episode, so do the writers.

 

I don't really see the appeal of Felicity and why so many people go on about her, but I suppose she's better than Laurel at the moment at any rate. Her logic about Tommy's death being the Hood's fault was pretty wtf. How was his dying in any way connected to Oliver? Malcolm was working on tearing down the glades for years before the Hood turned up. I get that she's grieving and irrational but it's been five months and she's supposedly quite intelligent.

Anyway that was definitely an awesome premiere and I think season 2 will be even better than the first. Major spoilers for season 2 here:

The news report about the particle accelerator in Central City was awesome - can't wait to see the Flash. I think that he comes in at like episode 15 or something. Episode 5 is called 'The Demon's Head' so it sounds like we're going to see Ra's al Ghul or at least the League of Shadows. Someone was cast as Dr. Ivo (the creator of Amazo, a robot capable of duplicating powers) and he is apparently going to be the big bad on the island this season. All that plus Ollie hopefully becoming Green Arrow, the appearance Black Canary and the rise of Red Arrow/Arsenal/Speedy/Roy makes it sound like they'll definitely be living up to the 'City of Heroes' tagline.

Edit: Episode 5 might actually be called the League of Assassin's - I'm not sure. If that's the case we probably won't see Ra's himself, which is likely considering he was in Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rises not long ago.

 

Just watched the new episode and it was awesome, so awesome in fact that it made AOS look even more disappointing.

Black Canary will initially be Laurel's sister, who in fact is still alive. But that she will eventually die in this season and following that, Laurel takes up the role

 

I think the sister card is too predictable. Everyone thought Tommy would be the next Black Archer, but he died, so I'm hoping it's something different.

I think that's why they will do it, tbh. Everyone is expecting Laurel to be Black Canary, because...well, she is Black Canary. But there's going to be something else before her.

The producers have already said that the role of Black Canary has to be "earned;" That is in essence an origin story. Whether the first Black Canary is indeed her sister, dunno - but that's what the articles online are saying.

 

Well, it's likely that Black Canary will have some connection to Laurel, and they made a big deal of Sarah possibly being alive last season. It stands to reason that it will be her. That said as Starwind pointed out the writers have been pretty good at defying expectations so far so I wouldn't rule out a surprise twist.

I'm pretty sure when they announced Caity Lotz was being cast to play Black Canary one of the producers also said that she'd be Laurel's sister though.

I just hope if it is Sarah she has her own unique origin story dissimilar to Oliver's story. I mean, I don't want another 'washed up on Chinese island, became badass, returned home a vigilante/super hero' kind of thing.

 

I agree with Starwind about being too predictable.I really like Felicity, but I gotta say she isn't greaaat but she is much better then Laurel, whose acting made me remember Kristen Stewart, she doesn't remotely feels like the badass Canary, she is very cliché and isn't as bearly as hot as Canary, is that machismo? yes, but I am a man and I won't deny I like seeing a hot or cute woman. Really I know Black Canary's costume is ridiculous, and I don't want that costume in the series, but c'mon, give us an actress with at least a bit of sex appeal.

Edit: See! Caity Lotz has a shitton of sex appeal, and I doubt she is a worst actress than Katie Cassidy.

It seems like they're neutering the protagonist. One of the things I liked the most about this show was that the protagonist wasn't shy about killing his enemies. Now he's a fucking pansy. If he doesn't get over it quickly I'll probably have to drop this show.

 

I saw that less as neutering and more as Oliver actually maturing and trying to move beyond all that happened to him on the island. Last season the lines between himself and the other, more blatantly villainous vigilantes were a little arbitrary considering how mercilessly he killed half the people he met - and I appreciated he'd want to distance himself from that after having his best friend die thinking of him as a serial killer, which he basically is.

Besides, he can still be brutal as fuck without killing people. I'm pretty sure Batman breaks at least half the bones of every person he ever fights, which Oliver seems to enjoy doing too. It's a lot more vicious than just shooting someone in the head.

 

Yeah, it was pretty inevitable that he was going to stop killing people and that seems like a pretty arbitrary reason to stop watching in my opinion. He's a DC hero after all, and it's been pretty obvious from the beginning that he's going to become more like his comic book self as time goes by. Just be glad he isn't pulling out any boxing glove trick arrows.

Viewtiful - I totally agree, and from what I saw in the promos for the next episode, the 2v1 fight between China White, Bronze Tiger and Ollie looks like it will be pretty brutal.

 

Fatality, the trick boxing glove will definitely appear sooner or later its as much a part of the green arrow as the batarang is for Batman.

Also someone made a really great observation that in season 1 Ollie was in soldier mode in his war against the people on the book and it was a kill or be killed war, where anyone he killed was basically the enemy soldier and it was justified.

Now that his war over, he can't easily justify the killing and he can honor his friends memory, that's how he goes from hood, to arrow to green arrow.

I know it won't happen but it would have been amazing if Summer Glau was the Black Canary.
