So I've been intentionally avoiding all spoilers (with the exception of Goodra Cult...), and my precious, precious Braixen just evolved into a disgusting hobo Delphox. I... I might have to restart again with the Water starter, now that I've checked out all the new Pokemanz.

 

Last night I gave Capture Power to a random acquaintance form Wonder Trade. He then proceeded to give me every Kalos starter and Tyrantum.

I'm okay with this.

Pretty much. I waited for an overly sexualized anthro vixen, got that instead. Hey, I gotta get that fap material somewhere, right? Yeah, opinions opinions, but the second evo was really, really misleading.

Anyways, my new team might be Greninja, Charizard, Gardevoir (bait), Aegislash,
Helioptile and Tyrantrum. STAB SE moves against everything except Normal and Electric, and and Aegislash learns Sacred Sword for Normals and Tyrantrum EQ for Electrics. Maybe overkill for ingame, but I'm OCD about planning these out.

 

I have infinity Bulbasaurs, Charmanders, and the three new starters, plus Dratinis and Gabites with adamant nature if anyone wants any. Not literally infinite, but I have a lot of each of them. I'll probably start breeding Eevees and Larvitars after I make it past the fifth gym.

 

Tempted to grab those from ya, but I'm just taking it so slow with this game and I don't want to "cheat" and trade stuff before I actually beat the game.

By the way, it's fun as hell to randomly get a prize money power-up from a friend in the middle of a battle. Suddenly my payout is 20k.

Also, I understand completely. I have not even beaten the fifth gym, I'm just trolling around and raising an entire new team of pokemon.

 

Yeah, the only problem is that I have nothing to buy now. I mean I have a full suit from the expensive clothing shop, I have all the TMs, got both of the other two Kanto starter's megastones. And am slowly maxing out the number of pokeballs I can get. Got max Ultra, Dusk and Repeat balls. Guess I'll just keep buying clothes and the Stat boosters. Also, the lack of a real Move Tutor makes me sad, it also makes Tyrunt sad since he only gets Bite/Crunch thus the Strong Jaw ability is very underutilized.

 

Was dead set on restarting until I got a Modest Froakie, but I got a Timid female one with best IV in Sp. Atk on my first try. Guess I'll keep it. Well, here's hoping the third time's the charm and I actually complete the game XD

Wow, the last time I REALLY played Pokemon was when Gold/Silver came out. After that I tried the new ones, but none of them hooked me. That being said, Holy shit, this game is AMAZING.

Started the game a couple of times, then reached level 55 or so, 7 badges and started again because I was unhappy with some choices I made. Gonna restart again, because I ended up with worse shit than before. Then I thought about, you know, doing some research online in order to learn a bit about making a team and all that and the amount of theorycraft that goes into it is absurd. Pages and pages about Jobs, movesets, stats calculation, which pokemon to choose, breeding (which I thought was useless) perfect pokebabies and everything else.

I love it.

But to be honest, I'm totally lost. You guys apparently understand about this kind of thing, so, erm, can you help a total noob? I don't even know where or how to start.

Well to start out with, EVs and a pokemon's nature are most important. Effort Values can give 31 points into a stat by level 50 and are obtained by either defeating pokemon or Super Training, if you don't want to look up what gives what and then grind 252 of them I'd say either ignore them or just do Super Training, it's not as bad as some make it out to be and the secret training (which you can do once you have maxed EVs) give out Evolution Stones and other items. Natures, on the other hand, modify the stat they benefit, red, by 1.1x and 0.9x for the one they hinder, blue. Beyond that is for post-game and competitive play.

 

If you really want to get into it, you're also missing out on IVs. There are quite a few IV calculators out there if you're feeling masochistic enough to constantly reset to get that perfect nature, characteristic, and iv spread. If you're REALLY feeling masochistic, there's even a hidden power calculator if you want the right HP as well but that's more for competitive play.

I haven't done or explored any of the Super Training that you mentioned just yet, haven't gone that deep into Y yet, but typical EV training is a pain in the ass to min-max since you have to manually keep count and know which pokemon give the right evs. Vitamins only give you the first 100 as well, so that's 152 evs you have to grind by yourself.

 

Breeding for IVs is pointless now - all Pokemons' IVs are set to max during Wi-Fi battles now.

The lazy answer - smogon. It gets a lot of hate from around the internet because it basically commandeered online pokemon battling, but their tiers are always well researched and justified, as are their movesets. Basic tenants: STAB is good, coverage is good, and you need to know whether you should build your 'mon as a wall or sweeper or what have you. The most important part is the natures, and those are easy to know since their effects are shown in game.

I'm sure some of the HP people are annoyed as well.

 

Considering that Hidden Power got a 10 Base Damage nerf... meh. At this point it's better to just run a 4th move... unless you are a Jolteon made this gen because unless it's hidden away behind tons of shit, there isn't a general move tutor this gen. So unless your pokemon, like Jolteon, is now reduced to a 3/4 movepool with multiple repeat attack types, than HP isn't that good anymore.

 

I LOVE the hidden power change. The nerf is rather insignificant since it will... never be below 60 base power either. It removes the power variables from the breeding chains, but the type variables are still there, and to be honest, the type of hidden power is 100x more necessary than the power, and it's just a decrease of 10 BP anyway.

And $30 says that Pokemon Z will have buttloads of move tutors.

I'm still about 100 levels beyond butthurt BECAUSE MY 3DS STILL HASN'T COME.
