Recently finished the manga and got into this fandom.

I so far read Shezza's Life in Konoha's ANBU and Twenty Times Uzumaki Naruto Didn't Die. I think I really screwed myself with Shezza's fic. Cause that's now my subconscious standard for the fandom. I read the first few chapters of a bunch of other fics, some five star ones from this forum, but just couldn't get into any of them.

So DLP members, what's the #1 fic/oneshot that's you've read in this fandom. Aside from the two I listed here?

Spying no Jutsu, One Small Kindness, Daybreak: Part 1, The Howling Wind and Patriot's Dawn are the ones that spring to mind.

Anything by this guy really. I specifically like Reload which I wish wasn't pseudo-abandoned.

I read a chapter and a half of Patriot's Dawn and found the prose to be awful and the plot boring.

Howling Wind seemed like Canon with a harder working Naruto with a different chakra.

Do both get much much better?

Neither is anywhere close to canon, for one.

The Howling Wind more so than Patriot's Dawn. By a fair bit.

On whether Patrior's Dawn improves...well, I don't even like it that much tbh (though most do) but it does get better after the early chapters.

There is also a personal favorite of mine, Hurricane Suite, which is by the same author who penned Patriot's Dawn. It hasn't updated in a while, though.

Naruto: Altered History and its sequel Naruto: Shinobi Wars by Geor-sama. They don't follow canon at all really and they're well written and both over 300k so there's a lot there to sink your teeth into.

Steal My Thunder God by Nauro is pretty good, as well as Roarian's The Leaf's Naruto. I'm also obligated to mention Lungs' Light My Way.

Some non-DLP fics: Worth Dying For <-- kind of a post-apocalyotic setting, with future technology (For us, but old/ancient in universe)

Legacy of Uzushiogakure <--- Has some quasi Crossovered characters from Fairy tail, but just abilites/personalities and some appearances, that's it.

Naruto: Myoushuu no Fuuin. <--- Hasn't updates in awhile, so may be abandoned.

Do any of you happen to remember a fic where Naruto joins Anbu (not at 3 or anything ridiculous like that) - goes through some pretty intense training/hazing - at some point Naruto kills Lee as an example (last to reach a certain point)...

It certainly took quite a bleak approach on how such an organisation as ANBU would train their recruits in a more realistic setting. I remember the ending being terrible though.
