The real reason? Probably because the author thought it'd be really "shocking" and showcase how much Naruto has changed. Or something along those lines.

However, it was done in a such contrived manner it requires an overdose of suspension of disbelief.

New wave of recruits that Naruto gets the task of hazing, for being the top rookie in his batch. I don't remember exactly how it goes, but there was some kind of a run towards a location with the catch being that the faster you moved, the quicker more resistance built up from seals put on the rookies. Lee decided to go full sprint and as a result was last. The last one gets killed as per tradition.

I remember that fic (Throwing Shadows). It had a few good ideas, but it was awful and grimdark to the point of pure stupidity. Yes, let's take our best and brightest and deliberately kill them off just to prove a fucking point because that seems like a great idea! FFS we're talking chuunin and even jounin.

Oh, but I guess jounin aren't real ninjas unless they are ANBU.

Can't believe no one told you to read The Girl From Whirlpool. Probably the best story in the fandom, even if it doesn't have Naruto.

Even so, I've read that fic, and it's not 'the best in the fandom'. It's certainly good, no doubt, but far from the best.

 

I've never actually read that. I just get to chapter two where the Sandaime says Naruto has successfully sneaked past the ANBU guards and Kakashi replies, "That's pretty good for an academy student". I just seem to cringe so hard that that is the reply to an student shooting up vastly in skill level and changing personality. The response to which was a casual display of apathy from the head of the Shinobi force.

 

You mean the part where Kakashi pretends to be apathetic as usual, all the while adding it to a mental list of noticeable problems with Naruto's behavior that makes him go ape shit later?

"We're four." Sasuke eventually found the need to point out. Naruto grimaced. "I... noticed." And hadn't that been an unpleasant surprise? "Why? I thought we'd be at least ten." Sasuke frowned, making him look reminiscent of his future self. "Kura-chan said that we'd 'probably' end up at that age." He grimaced again. "I guess that it really wasn't as predictable as we had hoped."

 

Is that supposed to be an entry for the worst summaries thread? It certainly reads like one.

Tinder is being a holier-than-thou dick who appears to think that because most time travel stories are bad, they all inherently are. Which is a damned lie, if Steal My Thunder God is anything to go by.

 

I'm sorry, they call the Kyuubi 'Kura-chan'? And Sasuke angsting over how Itachi might be Konoha's greatest hero, but is also the brother of a 'ruthless murderer'?

Not for me, I think.

That summary is rambling, poorly written crap, with two grimaces and one frown in barely more than the length of a tweet. It has Naruto and Sasuke de-aged to four year olds, which is irritating - having toddler protagonists is never a recipe for a good fic - and 'Kura-chan' which is unforgivable. I'm not alone in disliking the direction Naruto went in, and good!Kyuubi is part of that, but I'll accept it in an otherwise decent story. Giving it a pet fucking name is just taking the piss, though.

The only saving grace is, as Sree pointed out, that it does convey the basic setup of the story - although it could have done that better in one short sentence.

It could be a decent fic. But I doubt it.

 

Also, Steal My Thunder God isn't that great tbh.
