Yeah, the only thing wrong with that scene is what happens after the dragon.

 

It's not a completely awful story. As a thing, I don't mind marriage contracts so much, as long as the fic is appropriately lulzy, but most of the time it's just sappy bullshit of having A and B fall in love regardless of the contract, with all the cliche's you'd expect to throw in like not knowing who Daphne is despite sharing classes for 6 years.

 

That cliche never bothers me considering I graduated high school with a class of 90 and only knew about 40 of them.

 

Now turn your school into a boarding school where everyone shares classes all year round and then add 2 more years.

 

And cut the number of people in half.

 

Yeah, I went to a boarding school with maybe an 80 person graduating class and I knew everyone by name in my class, even if I didn't know them personally. Then again, we did have uniforms with name tags, but still.

 

There's only one middle school and one elementary school in my district I went school with these people for 12 years and played 2 sports, but my point before this gets completely off topic is being around the same people in school doesn't mean your going to bother to learn who everyone is.

 

No one else found it amusing that he killed it with fire?

 

I didn't expect it to kill the dragon, but come on. The background of the story established that fire + dragonfire = bitchin' explosion. It was a good shot by Harry and tough luck for the dragon, but an explosion that creates a fireball the size of the dragon itself is going to do some damage when confined to the dragon's mouth.

Oh. "Kill it with fire." Duh.

Then they'd be terribly ineffective against other dragons. And there was an explosion as well.

 

It doesn't really matter how anyone wants to explain it or rationalize it, killing a dragon with a fire making charm is one of the stupidest things I've read in fanfiction.

I understand that the author probably needed that dragon dead so Harry can improve his status in his house or for whatever other reason that will be used in the coming chapters, but a stupid way to kill a dragon is just that a stupid way to kill a dragon.

 

I haven't read the story, he didn't kill the dragon with fire from what i understand. He used fire to cause a reaction with dragon fire, which caused an explosion that killed the dragon.

Fire didn't kill the dragon, the explosion the fire caused killed the dragon.

 

So, are you saying that it wasn't the gun that killed him, it was those darn bullets?

 

If they were bulletproof and you shot an exploding canister next to him to kill him, yes, that's exactly what I mean.

 

I think, perhaps, Daphne Greengrass is getting a bit overdone. I'm starting to have the same reaction to random encounters with Daphne as I do to Harry being greeted at King's Cross with, "a forceful bear hug from Hermione, who had clearly grown up over the summer."

Is it really necessary to have a romantic pairing at all? At this point, a return of fem!Blaise would be a welcome respite.

 

Only now getting overdone? It was overdone in 2009, and the only thing that has changed is the quantity of drivel involving her. There's still not a single Harry/Daphne fic that I would call truly awesome (sorry sesc).

 

I read the scene where Charlie makes a slip that there is something about the dragon's fire.

I read the scene where they found a single line in a book about dragons that says that the fires from two dragons reacted in a spectacular explosion.

And yet, when I read the scene with the "fight" with the dragon, the use of the fire making charm to cause an explosion was as big let down as the use of the disarming charm to kill the baddest dark wizard of the century.

I'm not arguing here the mechanics of what happened, or whether it's possible to kill a dragon with a zippo. All I'm saying is that the way the scene was written or at least how I read it, it really was a stupid way to kill a dragon.
The author's logic that every dragon which is unfortunate enough to be close to another fire and does breath out a fire of his own will be a very dead dragon just felt...

And if anyone points to Terry Pratchett's self exploding Swamp dragons they were described from the beginning as the unluckiest buggers in the world. In HP dragons are those big, fire breathing reptiles that take a dozen fully grown wizards to take down.
