When a bee stings anything with it's aforementioned stinger, it rips its own organs out, causing it to die. Basically, they're a one-hit wonder that doesn't really hurt. Worker bees are represented by the knight, the Queen bee is obviously the queen.

To be fair, there are people such as my sister that are naturally allergic to bee stings, and have rather severe reactions. That, and different sub-species have different venom intensities as well.

There is also the fact that consecutive bee stings have progressively worse effect upon the one being stung.

Personally, I've only ever been stung by some yellow jacket wasps, and I barely felt a thing(back of my knee and the crook of my elbow). Of course, wasps are an entirely different matter from bees, but still.

Rambling aside, it is odd that a species would develop such that it kills itself in such a silly manner.

To be fair to bees, their main enemies are other insects and small mammals. They can get their stinger out of other insects, and if they sting mammals (eg. mice or rats that get to the hive) it's more important for the hive that a bee gets the maximum amount of poison into the mammal (the barb of the stinger rips out the sack of poison out of the bee that keeps on pumping poison) than the survival of said bee.
