Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but seriously man, what the fuck did you smoke in order for that one to form?

 

To be honest, I'm probably in the minority here, but I did not enjoy the bringing back of Gallifrey at all, especially when you consider how it was done and the implications on the last 7 series.
And I've only seen Clara thrice, but I have never met a more teeth-grinding, insufferable companion since the reboot. So I found her "hi there, Old Doctor, I know you haven't set off the Time War yet after exchanging maybe 2 words with you, because I can tell from your eyes" moment to be such terrible Sue-ish writing I almost stopped watching right there.
So between those two, while I enjoyed the rest of the special (though I still found it strange 'cause it seemed more like a monster-of-the-week average episode than a fifth-freakin'-decade anniversary), it just left a sour taste on my mouth.

Now the Christmas special, though, I found I liked because...
A. Clara's role was MAJORLY dialed down.
B. Things came full circle, or at least reasonably so, with everything going on so far. And it opened up a brand new chance for entire new beginnings, which I always approve of. In fact, I see the next season much like I see series 1 of the 2005 reboot: An fresh beginning.
In that light even the Gallifrey crap is better, because I can ignore everything that's been established and has happened, and make this a totally new series about a man trying to find his lost home.

Also, I just kinda liked the regeneration progress this time around. I wish they wouldn't have done the 'last goodbye' with Smith in the TARDIS, but that just seems to be traditional with every regeneration now.

 

I was really annoyed at Smith's speech. It was pretty clearly just the actor talking to the audience and didn't really fit for the Doctor as far as I was concerned. Fuck the fourth wall anyway, amirite?

Beyond that I think I've posted several times in this thread about how I disliked the fiftieth anniversary and the Christmas special equally. The plotline of the fiftieth anniversary completely undermined the character that they've spent seven series on after the reboot(and continued with the retarded trend of 'We can't change this, Clara/Amy/Sue-of-the-week!' 'Yes we can, Doctor, if I use my powers of believing in magic and being attractive!'). And I honestly felt like the Christmas special was just a weak episode in general.

Doctor Who is succumbing to the same issue that Sherlock is, in my opinion, in that it's becoming too self-aware. Stephen Moffat is also proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can set up really awesome storylines but has no idea how to resolve them in any satisfying or meaningful way.

Series 7 sucked and I'm not optimistic at all for series 8.

Holy crap, that was a fun read.

Some weird choices here and there (Vincent Price? Really?) but the 4th casting is perfect. 6th and 7th just as much.

Probably/maybe would have gone with Macklemore for the 11th, but I love Glover too.

That was less fun in that I didn't recognize most of the names, but loved it nonetheless. I'm pretty sure we might eventually see a female doctor within the next 20 years or so...since I have no doubt the series will go on that long and by then they'll be branching out in their ideas.

I loved the idea of Sheridan Smith as the Mistress. I finally get what fangirlism is all about.

Really? I don't think Sherlock would act like that at all. He knows there are things that he doesn't know and he is constantly always learning new things..so no I really don't think it would go like that.

While that's true, wouldn't he insist on knowing how it works and how to make sense of it?

Keeping an open mind doesn't mean accepting everything at face value. He'd want to understand how exactly the TARDIS works and... ...Well, you know how the Doctor is about explaining things.

 

Given that he claims not to know that the earth revolves around the sun due to it not being relevant to crime (in both 'Sherlock' and the original canon, I believe) and not wanting irrelevant info to clog up his mind (palace), I can totally buy him not being phased by the TARDIS. For all he knows, it's something perfectly possible but uncommon.

No, the real problem Sherlock would have with meeting the Doctor would be trying to pull off a Sherlock Scan - and being met with several thousand years of contradictory, unexplainable alien-ness.

Also, new companion for series 8, alongside Clara.

Really? Even Sherlock must understand that time machines... ...eh, I guess I can't really find a solid argument for him not to dismiss it.
There was the bit in the Hounds episode where he took something he didn't understand badly, but he was drugged then.
I still think he'd probably hate the doctor and his inability to pin him down.

...Ugh, that's probably exactly what they'll end up doing with this guy. Was he the one from the 50th anniversary? I don't remember.
