Well, Harry/Tonks would also technically be fanon bullshit. The creepiness factor notwithstanding, if someone is going to write HP/NT, they can also write Harry as a mature 15 year old.

Err, what? Well, yes. Technically, any pairing other than the canon ones are fanon, whether or not you want to clasify them as bullshit is up to you.

Freak said it as if Harry's incredible maturity was canon, which it is not. And I clasified it as bullshit because it a trope that many, many (terrible) fics use without good reason or proper canon deviation.

I'm all for reading a mature Harry, but I want a reason as to why he is different from the canon and not 'oh he's been mature all along canon up until this point, too'.

It's all just a mask he puts on for his friends so they'll accept him. After all, if he showed everyone just how powerful and smart he was, they'd hate him.

I know you're joking, Redshell, but for a minute there I imagined every indie!Harry story with the character bashing of basically anyone Canon!Harry liked, and I was irrationally angry.

Someone who is in place of Harry can easily be very mature for their own age. To write this, You don't need a canon deviation. Maybe a few scenes of earlier years showing a bit maturity when compared to his peers.

The Dursleys' abuse (or neglect, if you prefer) made him mature, right guys? Right?

No no no, you've got it all wrong. Harry never got to be a kid, he's been an adult in maturity levels all along.

God, now I want to puke.

Off course that is true since he started cooking all meals and cleaning the house before even turning two.

I admit, this made me actually open up the fic to see this and laugh my ass off, and I was quite disappointed to read that it didn't actually happen. The fact that the suggestion was there though... ugh. Pathetic.

This is really one of those 'unintentionally hilarious' fics. I mean, solid 1/5, but fucking funny for it.

It's almost reccomended. It has an 'interesting' take on marriage contracts. Some interesting magic and Hermione is kinda funny. It's very slow paced and Harry is probably as active as in canon. Sometimes he is smart sometimes he is dumb as fuck. The pairing is non-existent, they haven't even smiled at each other, so don't expect too much. Also too much POV change.

I found this story on some of my favorite authors' favorite list and I still follow it but I think that is in fact quite bad. Some nice ideas but horrible execution. Incredibly boring dialogue, the "detective"-work is veeeery stupid.
Also the relative importance of the different plots seems awkward: Harry having an idea on how he might not have to die just happens in the first quarter of the chapter - after rambling on how he has accepted the necessity of his death - and then come paragraphs upon paragraphs of something that is neither romance nor world-building nor dramatic nor anything, just stupid.

So, yes, I do still follow the story but one can easily skip over 1/2 or even 2/3 of the text.

Pain and misery, the two constants in Harry Potter's life awaken in him something that has not been seen for several centuries. Will it mean the salvation of the magical world, or will it be its dissolution to nothingness? Concepts from Naruto, and Crossover with Dresden Files later.

Many of you probably know a similiar fic about the eyes of the kaleidoscope by OnTheImportanceOfLungs so you might like the concept.
In the beginning, I feared that this would be bad. Azkaban, betrayed by still-alive parents, manipulative Dumbledore etc. Harry only looking for revenge, feeling justified to do just about everything, contradicting himself every second sentence. (à la 'I do not hate them. I just want to kill them in a horrible way').
But, as it turns out, the author did not "mean" that. This was supposed to be somehow crazy and Harry develops. Subjective writing, using Harry's then somewhat crazy perspective.
And there are the good parts, of course! The HP world is massively expanded to include the fairies, "true magic" etc etc, there are awesome fights, Harry is applying himself - extremely so. etc.
So if you like OnTheImportanceOfLungs's fic, you might try this one, too.

Watch me get pedantic over a made up word because I've got nothing else going on....

Not everything a fan community does is fanon.
    Fanon = Fan(dom) + Canon.

One person writing a Harry/Tonks fic doesn't make the pairing fanon. A thousand people doing it? Still not fanon.

Fanon tends to be generally-accepted/widespread theories or ideas about what probably happened in the books but didn't make it onto the page, or how something in the canon universe works but wasn't fully explained. By its very nature, fanon can't directly contradict canon.

Female Blaise Zabini was fanon (the less popular male, Italian, Blaise, not quite so much) ... until canon contradicted it.

Wards are fanon - Their use in the fan community is massively widespread, while canon neither proves nor disproves their existence.

    Contraceptive potions: Fanon.

Basilisks taking ages to decay: Fanon.

Umbridge/Centaur non-con: Fanon (but I don't think even a horse-man that lives alongside giant spiders would have the poor taste to put its dick in that... not even a banjo-playing centaur).

"Virginia" Weasley: Fanon, until it was disproved by canon's Ginevra Weasley.

A pairing isn't fanon, it's just part of a fan work.
The only way a pairing would be fanon is if a lot of people believed that it more than likely happened in the books, despite not being mentioned in them; and, even then, the pairing couldn't be fanon if canon directly contradicted it (which, given the canon timeline, makes H/Tonks becoming 'fanon' nearly impossible, without a shovel and the widespread belief that Harry is a complete ghoul).

Headcanon certainly can contradict canon, because it's just a way of saying, "This is how I tend to see it in my head." Basing any argument on that criteria, I shouldn't need to tell anyone, won't stand up in court, nor will it win you many points with the debate team.

Commonly used fandom clichés aren't really fanon, either, if they contradict canon.

    "Dan and Emma" Granger: Fanon.

Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot & Prongs calling themselves The Marauders: Fanon that may have ascended to canon via Word of God in recent years, during an interview.

Goat-fucker Aberforth: Uh... the jury is out. Canon suggests it; I believe fanon would gladly accept it, but for the fact that Word of God asks how old you are, finds out you're 8, then wisely-if-not-so-convincingly suggests "inappropriate charms" means "trying to magi-genetically engineer a cleaner goat... with curly horns."

Male veelas who have one true (likely male) mate that they must (ass-)fuck, lest they both lose their magic and die: Not fanon, just a sadly popular/cliché plot device. Though, it's definitely less a plot (like a story), and significantly more a device (like a vibrator set somewhere between 'stun' and 'disintegrate').

There are plenty of Harry/Voldemort fics out there, but no one would suggest that the pairing is fanon. :facepalm

This is sometimes referred to as being 'Jossed', as Mr. Whedon was known to pay attention to his fanbase and then fuck with them by overturning their assumptions in later episodes.

    ...unlike Sirius/Remus.

It doesnt even make logical sense. Look if female veelas attract males(ie. the opposite sex) it would make sense if male veelas attract their opposite sex. The female sex.

Well then I guess the slash writers would have to think a little and then probably get around that by making Draco female but still have a dick so he can still put his dick in Harry and oh my god why am I trying to make sense of thiswtfWarlockwhatdidyoudotome!?

They'd sooner turn Harry female and then write on and on about how he's the raven-haired Queen Veela prophesied to be fucked and impregnated by Draco Malfoy and that their kids will something something.

    "That's not true... that's Impossible!"

I- I tried so hard to avoid pointing that out, and then you come in with your hammer, and- and your words, and you- you just... *sigh*

At first glance, male veela attracting other males might not make sense, but if you think of the Y chromosome as merely being a damaged X chromosome, then consider that this might make so-called "male veela" just one mutation heaped on top of another mutation (possibly with female veela being a mutation, in the first place), then might it not follow that oh my god why am I trying to make sense of thiswtfMercenarywhatdidyoudotome!?

They just skip the "turn female" part...

I'd like to bring this thread back on topic by "almost" recommending something, but I can't think of anything that either didn't stop updating after two or three chapters, or hasn't already been recommended. I just want Strangers at Drakeshaugh to update again... seems like it's about time for that to happen.

    Happen, dammit!

So, in order to help bring this thread back onto the train tracks, I shall now vanish from this conversation.

    Magic!

This story is fucking bollocks. I wouldn't rate this a 1/5 in a generous mood. Not only does it use dialogue as so - "Hello", - it is also completely retarded. I mean, did you guys know that Professor Vector is 17? Amazing, she's been a teacher at the school every year Harry has been there. Does that mean she was a teacher when she was fucking 13?

Honest to god. Can we like ban people for posting such shitty stories? This guy needs to take responsibility for the tears of blood I'm currently crying from the pain of having to read this shit.
