Here's another one (that's probably been done or at least suggested before): "Ten Little Death Eaters"

It's year 1986, and ten death eaters who escaped Azkaban receive an invitation to Malfoy manor. When they arrive they find Lucius dead, and discover that there is no way they can get out; all communication is blocked and gates are closed. The story is told from different perspectives as the death eaters are all killed one by one, and panic and paranoia is getting worse day by day. Who is the killer, and what are their motives?

Also other "enclosed space murder mystery" plots could be very interesting with added magic.

 

It's either time-travelling Harry, 6yr old Harry who has a pissed off horcrux whispering to him or a Dumbledore who's stacking the deck in preparation for the next war by removing Voldemort's support base. I would love to read the AD one. In fact ...

Plot Bunny 1:

Circa 1986 Dumbledore loses a vote in the Wizengamot that he had been positive he would win. A proposed Muggle Protection Act is discarded in favour of the current, murkier, more easily manipulated law. He realises that Lucius Malfoy spearheaded the opposition vote and that he has as much, if not more, power than he did at the height of Voldemort's insurgency.

Cue serial killer Dumbledore who spends the next half a decade murdering Death Eaters, usually by making it look like an accident. Harry Potter enters a very different wizarding world.

Plot Bunny 2:

Harry Potter is hurled into the 1940s by [insert time travel scenario] and as time travelling Harrys tend to do he decides to kill a teenaged Tom Riddle before he becomes a serious threat. This Harry, however, has spent the last decade of his life fighting a European-wide war against the Dark Lord and is one seriously messed up wizard. He decides that before he will kill Riddle he'll make him feel fear.

Basically, 20,000 words of Harry killing Tom's associates, nearly killing Tom before letting him go and then finally killing him when he's nothing but a nervous, paranoid wreck. I imagine this would start out with Tom going to work at Borgin and Burke's and finding his employers hanging upside down from the roof, completely skinned but still alive with the blood dripping from their corpses spelling out the words: You Are Next.

Plot Bunny 3:

Dumbledore vs Grindelwald.

Bavaria, 1945. The Redoubt that muggles believed would be the Nazi's last stronghold is actually Grindelwald's base of operations. The Goblins and Great Alliance of Wizards assault it, fighting savagely with Grindelwald's last followers who, despite their vast numerical inferiority, cause great casualties. In the midst of this Dumbledore finds and fights Grindelwald. A story of the greatest duel of the 20th Century interspersed with flashbacks to their first meeting, friendship and Ariana's death.

Could also take place in Berlin as the Russians attack it.

 

I would read all of them Alive. I would like to see #1 in media res where the story starts with Harry entering a wizarding world plagued by a murderous, unknown vigilante.

 

So, I was sitting in the kitchen, raging about the abusive Dursley cliche and how it was often used for angst or hurt/comfort stories when this idea came to me.

Vernon dies before Harry goes to Hogwarts by taking him out of the way of a speeding car. He might not like the boy or his freakishness but a man can't just watch a child die in front of him.

Petunia becomes colder to him but doesn't escalate. Dudley become more aggressive against him but that is because he is angry, not because he is cruel. Harry feels conflicted because he was sure that Vernon hated him but he feels wrong thinking bad things of the guy that saved his life (in the sense that it is ungrateful and starts doubting himself, not in the sense he immediately thinks he was right)

And then the Hogwarts letter arrives and when it is confirmed as authentic, his first thought is "Oh no. I really am a freak!".

 

Just a small AU I did in half an hour to kill time. Includes my favorite plots/changes.


The Alterverse

1926 - Merope does not abandon her son and decides to raise him. This leads to a more stable Riddle who is not a psychotic purist. This primary POD creates a butterfly effect which affects births after it. Some people are not born, some are born earlier or later and some people who did not exist previously do now.

1945 - Dumbledore and Grindelwald both die in their duel. The Elder Wand is snatched by Arcturus Black, one of Grindelwald's British supporters. The Wand would remain in the Black Family until Bellatrix got it in 1984.

1954 - Tom Riddle becomes the new Defense teacher at Hogwarts.

1968 - Instead of focusing on Muggles, Arthur Weasley becomes one of the Unspeakables.

1975 - During their fifth year at Hogwarts, James is too late to save Snape and the latter is bitten by a transformed Lupin. A short fight ensues in which Severus kills the werewolf to protect his life. As he was only defending himself, Snape is not expelled or punished in any way. Sirius however is punished for his prank, though also not expelled. Disgusted that Sirius was not expelled, Snape leaves Hogwarst for Durmstrang. James refuses to speak to Sirius ever again from that moment and their friendship falls aparat. Pettigrew is shaken by these events and loses faith in his friends. He is comforted by young Rita Skeeter and the two start dating, a thing which would result in their marriage after school years.

1978 - Nymphadora Tonks is born in 1978 instead of 1973.

1979 - Bellatrix Black creates a Horcrux.

1980 - After years of serving the school as the Defense teacher, Tom Marvolo Riddle becomes the Headmaster of Hogwarts. One of his first acts as a Headmaster is the removal of Divination and the introduction of Alchemy. This is unsurprising, given that Riddle for years has been speaking against Flamel and his refusal to share the Stone with the general population.

1981 - Bartemius Crouch becomes the new Minister for Magic.

1982 - Sirius Black marries Hestia Jones. Several months after the wedding, their son Chronos is born. Meanwhile, Gilderoy Lockhart graduates Hogwarts at the top of his class and begins travelling the world as an adventurer.

1983 - Xenophilius Lovegood and his wife die in a tragic accident caused by an experimental charm. Luna is left an orphan. Narcissa Malfoy, having always wanted a daughter of her own, adopts the girl.

1985 - Dark Lady Bellatrix Black kills James Potter using the Elder Wand. Because he sacrificed himself for his wife and son, Bellatrix's curse rebounds and destroys her body when she attempts to kill the two. Snape, her servant, manages to take the Elder Wand to prevent Lily from taking it. Saddened by the loss of her husband, Lily takes Harry and leaves Britain to France.

1986 - Thanks to his (genuine) accomplishments, Gilderoy Lockhart becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts. Only four years after graduating the school himself!

1988 - Narcisa Malfoy replaces Binns as the History Professor at Hogwarts.

1991 - Harry Potter returns from France to Britain with his mother to attend Hogwarts.

 

Now that is an interesting take on things and I'd be glad to read. It's posts like the one above me that make me hate this thread from time to time, because they're fantastic ideas/plot bunnies that will stay just that and nothing more.

Mind you, I hope someone does end up taking the idea and running along with it as I find the divergences quite enticing.

Actually, wait just a moment... Snape went to Durmstrang? Isn't that a purebloods-only school? Or did he become accepted by his grandfather all of a sudden and used his influence to transfer there?

 

Snape in possession of the Elder Wand would be a fun tale to read. Whether in this plot bunny or another.

How frustrating. Each of those could spiral into an interesting oneshot or more. All of them actually flow together and make a scary amount of sense. I'd love to read this, though the conjectures that my mind is bringing together are fascinating by themselves. Would you start with Harry and reflect back through time, or would you start earlier? Possibly with Tom?

 

Perhaps the current Hogwarts headmaster could convince the Durmstrang staff to allow this one exception. Maybe even Riddle helps out somehow.

The Prologue would show Merope surviving her birth with a determination to raise her son properly.

The first chapter, titled '65 Years Later' shows Harry as he arrives from France to Britain with Lily. He's curious how things have changed since he was 5 years old. Painful memories of his father's death are suddenly coming back and he's unsure what to think.

He and his mother are seen by the British population as saviors who ended the Dark Lady's reign of terror. Instead of Harry being 'the boy who lived', they are simply called "The Potters".

As they walk through Diagon Alley, they encounter Sirius Black with his son. Sirius greets Lily, but she acts coldly towards him (in this AU, Snape never called Lily a mudblood, as the accident prevented that). Harry asks what's up, but she refuses to elaborate at the moment.

Eventually, they get to Ollivander's where they meet the Malfoys (including Luna) and see Draco getting his wand.

Basically, the changes would not be infodumped, but shown through narrative.

 

If you want to do something different, make Augusta Longbottom their executioner. Lucius made a not-so-subtle threat towards Neville. To ensure her grandson's safety, Augusta decided to eliminate all the Death Eaters who claimed to be under the Imperious curse.

Snape is initially spared because Dumbledore vouched for him back in 1981. Snape's treatment of Neville at Hogwarts gets him added to Augusta's naughty list.

Neville does well under his replacement and gains a great deal of confidence. He and Harry become friends.

Augusta is not impressed by her meeting with the Dursleys at the end of the year. She becomes concerned when Harry fails to write Neville. Dobby is still interfering with Harry's mail because Narcissa plans to use the diary.

Augusta rescues Harry from the Dursleys and decides to do something about the situation once school has started. She gets custody of Harry after she disposes of his relatives.

Harry and Neville save Ginny from the basilisk. Narcissa is identified as the instigator, but nothing can be done to her legally. Since Augusta doesn't worry about the letter of the law, the Malfoy family is extinguished that summer.

 

My take on the mega-crossover genre. It should be telling that I haven't done this before, because I couldn't think of any way to bring so many characters together and still make sense. I don't think I'll be doing any more super-crossover bunnies like that.

The Game Planet has been created by the mysterious Game Gods to be a place where the Game can be played.

What is the Game? The Game is an ongoing battle tournament with new members being added constantly. The Game never ends.

Fighters, or Players as they are called, are kidnapped from various alternate universes and transported to the Game Planet.

Each new Player has an irremovable and yet ever-changing tattoo placed on his body (usually on an arm) which shows his current amount of Points.

Points are the Game Planet's currency. During their arrival to the Game Planet, each Player receives a starting 100 points. At the beginning of each month, each player gets 50 points. However, this is not the only way to get points. Points can be gained by defeating other players, usually by killing them. They can also be gained by completing several tasks given by the Game Gods. The player who first completes the task is given the points (for example, a mission involving destroying a certain structure).

Points can be exchanged for food, medicine, weapons, clothing, shelter or even advice from the Game Gods. Usually, Points are the only way to get these things, as the Game Planet is a cruel and hard place to live in.

To illustrate how important points are, here are some random prices of items:

25 P - Small bread
60 P - Warm Soup
250 P - Standard Medpack
400 P - Backpack
700 P - Tent

Points cannot be given to other players or taken from them.

When a player dies, his amount of points is reduced to zero and he 'respawns' exactly 100 miles from the place of his death. This makes the Game virtually never-ending unless won.

The only way to 'win' the game is to get One Million Points. A player who gets such a point level is removed from the game, but it continues for the rest of players.

It should be mentioned that getting a million points is nearly impossible.

While certain Players have abilities which would allow them to leave the Game Planet, any attempt to leave the planet's atmosphere instantly kills the player attempting to do so and respawns him back on the surface of the Planet.

Actually, I had to cut the list in two because I thought it was too long. It initially even had Super Mario, Crash Bandicoot and even weirder additions.

 

Super cool, but there's a fundamental flaw. The Game Gods seem to make the law. But that's the problem:

They are not the law.

 

And you get a thumbs up just for that reference alone.

 

The thing is, in the situation you described I think I"d be more interested in rooting for the others more than I would Harry. I'd be rooting for Green Ranger, Gomez Addams, Rambo, Punisher, Batman, Terminator etc.

 

One word: Alliances.

 

Another word: deceit.
