    Um, no. That's called English.

    proph·e·cy [prof-uh-see]
    noun, plural proph·e·cies.
    1. the foretelling or prediction of what is to come.
    2. something that is declared by a prophet, especially a divinely inspired prediction, instruction, or exhortation.
    3. a divinely inspired utterance or revelation: oracular prophecies.
    4. the action, function, or faculty of a prophet.

And just so we don't go round and round: Prediction --> predict

    pre·dict [pri-dikt
    verb (used with object)
    1. to declare or tell in advance; prophesy; foretell: to predict the weather; to predict the fall of a civilization.

    verb (used without object)
    2. to foretell the future; make a prediction.

    fore·tell [fawr-tel, fohr-]
verb (used with object), fore·told, fore·tell·ing.
to tell of beforehand; predict; prophesy.

    ________________________________

If it doesn't come true, it's not a prophecy. It really is that simple.

Also, where in canon is there a prophecy that doesn't come true? I'm not talking about the BS with the inner-eye. I'm talking about a true prophetic utterance. We only read of two times where that happens, and both them came true in the text.

Of course, that begs the question, is there such thing as a non-ecstatic prophet in the HP world. While what she goes through isn't exactly ecstasy, it is along those lines.

That's right. I can accept Malfoy's redemption in humorous fics, but in any kind of serious setting he must die for being such a prick.

EDIT: And Andromeda and Sirius weren't the only Blacks to turn blood traitors. IIRC, Sirius's uncle, Alphard, I think, did the same thing.

Yes, but those two were the only ones mentioned of some import in the HP books, and were of recent times. Hmm, didn't Alphard get blasted from the tapestry because he gave Sirius some money when his family had just cut him off?

From what I recall there was a Black who married a muggle, and one other who married a Weasley. Both were naturally disowned as well, their names never to be used again for the naming of any future descendants.

The point is, people have brains. People can use them.

Usage of one's brain does not necessitate good things happening.

Of course it doesn't. It's not at all the point I was making. Good and evil have nothing to do with anything here. Because there is no good or evil, only power and-

    Ahem. Where was I?

Using your brain can lead to not adhering to the rules of your immediate environment, which I imagine breaking off from a family of bigoted purebloods is like. Same would go for Ron switching to pureblood supremacy. Basically, you're your own person, which means we can still murder Malfoy.

It still makes me wonder what made Sirius turn away from his family's preferred path at such a young age. Andromeda herself was a Slytherin and only eloped in her later years at Hogwarts away from her family. Perhaps she was the same as Sirius, from a young age as well, but merely kept it better hidden. I'd still like to know what prompted it, their families would have brainwashed them with the daily 'tutoring' about the pureblood propaganda.

Oh, on that matter I wholeheartedly agree.

Harry should have just burned down, with liberal use of Fiendfyre, the Malfoy manor, with all of the Malfoys inside it, after having dealt with Voldemort, and then conveniently blamed it on some unknown group of people who were resentful for the fuckers that once again got through the thick and thin mostly unscathed.

I dunno, what makes teenages rebel against their parents? A human mind is something much to complicated for me to pick apart. I just accept that sometimes people don't agree with others and have their own opinions despite strong encouragement to conform to the group. Also, keep in mind that Sirius's last straw didn't come until he was sixteen or so, when he ran away from home and that was after several years in Gryffindor and being friends with James Potter. Maybe he was simply hoping his family would change after all.

Ugh, Malfoys. I mean, fuck them. And +1 for mentioning Fiendfyre.

You assume they turned away due to "pureblood propaganda." It may have well been nothing of the sort.

"Mummy likes Regulus best," Little Sirius cried. "Fine, I'll show here! Hat, put me in Gryffindor!"

    or

"Father used Dark Arts on us when we were bad. I don't like them! And I don't like him!"

    or etc.

My point isn't that either of the above are the way in which it happened, but rather, are examples of many different things that are pretty small, but could begin the break that ends up with siding against Pureblood supremecy.

Also, James' father married Dorea Black. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, I wouldn't be surprised if she were removed from the tapestry for allowing her son to marry Lily.

Well, provided one of those wikis can be trusted, Dorea Potter apparently died in '77, while Lily married James in '78, so chances are she wasn't blasted off.

Since we're talking about Lily now, I must admit I'm somewhat perplexed by the girl that she was at Hogwarts. Not all of it, just several things really.

James and Sirius frequently harassed Snape, and then later on he did the same to them in return, and then it comes to mind that famous incident when Snape called Lily a 'mudblood'... but see, pushing that aside, I always wondered why Lily never tried helping her, at the time, friend by fighting James and Sirius with spells, rather than plainly standing on the side, acting indignant, and trying to reason with them, when that had obviously failed numerous times before.

If I recall correctly, the "Dorea Black is James' mother" theory was never confirmed. She could've been an aunt or a cousin-by-marriage or something.

Does anyone know where Tracy Davis comes from? There is no mention of her in the books.
Is she a made up character? or did J.K. Rowling 'confirm' her in a interview or something?

I mean, Daphne Greengrass got at least a mention in Ootp, but no where in canon is there any evidence of Tracy Davis ever existing.

And while on the topic of Daphne Greengrass isn't it dumb that one author once wrote her as a cold, indifferent and unforgiving girl. And called her 'The Ice Princess' and now her name and 'title' are synonyms. But I guess it's the same as Harry's magical time-freezing trunk.

I believe she was only mentioned, in passing, on Pottermore. The books themselves never bring her up. Oh and it's Tracey.

List of all students from Harry's generation at Hogwarts.

If you haven't yet, I recommend you read Ice Princess. Trust me, it's worth it.

I'll quote it again since you apparently didn't read it the first time:
So according to DD there are prophecies (as they are defined in canon) which didn't come to pass.

Also, retroactively deciding that a prophecy was not a true prophecy because it turned out to be wrong is moving the goalposts.

The name appeared on one of JKR's lists of people in Harry's year, and JKR mentioned in an interview that she was a half-blood.

You meant Harry's multi-compartment trunk, wherein he keeps a complete library of books on even the most esotheric topics there are (because, fuck, there are convenient Learn It Yourself books about everything in Pottervrse, right?), a spare bedroom and his stash of swords and daggers?

    Edit: nevermind

the issue of contingent prophecies (Voldemort having to mark someone first) puts this completely in a different realm, and I forgot about that part. On the other hand, regardless of what whichever way we're discussing it, none of it inverts cause and effect.
