Hermione went completely insane just before HBP began, so I doubt she would share.

She was no different in HBP than in the books before.

So what would a self-righteous person do, in a situation like that? They'd berate people for doing one thing, and then do it themselves, with a nonsensical justification that is nevertheless completely acceptable in their heads.

In other words, Hermione would have kept the book, and used the tips and spells within to improve her work. Keep in mind that she also wasn't miffed because the spells were potentially dangerous (and thus called for handing in the book), but because Snape's tips made Harry better at Potions than she was.

I just don't see it. It's not like the book itself forced Harry or anyone to use spells from it. They were just there, pretty much nothing more than ink on parchment. It's not like it was Riddle's diary or anything.

I just wish that Rowling actually expanded on this, and curtailed Hermione's cunt-ish behavior. As if it wasn't enough that she cheated that year to get Ron on the Quidditch team instead of another guy who might have done better, no matter that he was a rather foul git, yet had the audacity to berate Harry for supposedly spiking his juice with Felix Felicis.

HBP is, IMO, ruined by all the teenage romance drama shit.

If you removed all these parts, there would be nearly nothing left to read. Rowling would have to rewrite it from scratch.

What? McLaggen knocked Harry out because he was too big of a dickhead to mind his own business, i.e. guarding the goalposts. Fuck him.

Even though that doesn't exactly justify Hermione's cheating, I'm not the person to follow all the rules myself, so I stand with her on that particular issue.

Yeah, I noticed this, but to be frank people in that age range seem to have romance on their minds anyway. I was just very surprised that Harry was sucked into it because he was always awkward about it like it was just something to do because everyone did it... if that makes sense.

Am I the only one one who feels that the fandom is slowly dying, it started slowly after the last movie (July 2011) but last year I started feeling that the quality of fan fiction is going down and that the most of the real fans are slowly 'moving on'
maybe It's a bit out of proportion but still I think that from what I've seen the fandom is slowly dying.

are there other people who feel like this? Or am I just the only one?

Hopefully wil Fantastic beasts and where to find them give the fandom a new impulse

Fan fic quality declining? Most fics were always bad, you've probably just acquired better taste.

Also, I'd argue that many fics are improving as the authors themselves grow up and develop as writers.

Even on DLP. Just compare a random fic written in 2006 with a random one written in 2013.

Or check the library, or my own favorites list. Tis a nice bit of history right there, but it's not uncommon to come across a fic and be like "How the fuck did that get there? I seriously use to think that was good?"

So if anything the quality has risen not dropped, or my tolerance levels of what is expected have certainly dropped at any rate.

Got to give you that, I'm not the 13 year old boy who found fan fiction while looking for Harry potter epub versions.

I've changed but for example when was the last time you found a story that was long (over 450k words) and was written (or finished) in 2013.

you just don't find stories that are so in depth and complex like for example:

    - A stranger in an unholy land (serpant-sorcerer)
    - Altered Destiny (Dobbyelflord)
    - The Lie I've lived
    - Dumbledore's Army and the year of Darkness
    - you want to make a memory (enitsirk)

you Just don't find stories that good anymore.

or I'm just not looking hard enough

    Did you try WbA?

There are still plenty of good fics. 450k stories don't just appear out of thin air though. That Taure's story is very good, that one with Hermione in slytherin, etc. Maybe, they will become just as long. Try to be more optimistic.

The first two suck, the third is up for debate, the fourth is a complete aberration, and I haven't even heard of the fifth. If you want to talk about long stories of quality that have been finished recently or are still updating, here's a list:

Prince of a Dark Kingdom (in progress, likely to be completed)
Renegade Cause (complete, sequel on hiatus)
    Innocent (complete, sequel in progress)
Sitra Ahra (in progress, likely to be completed)
    Incorruptible (complete)
Alexandra Quick series (four books complete, fifth in progress)

There are more, though admittedly not at 450k words (which is a bit of an unrealistic figure anyways, given that it's longer than the first three books combined. fics like that tend to be serieii too).

That's mostly your opinion. but I got I got to disagree with you.

I've got to admit I might be a little biased on the second since it was my first fan fiction.

That you don't know the fifth one doesn't surprise me since it isn't really fan fiction but a 'canon' version of the marauders 7 years at hogwarts (with ideas of the author filling the gaps) I'd recommend it but isn't everybody's cup of tea.

got to give you a few points for adding Renegade cause and Incorruptible to the list those two are probably both better than the second and fourth on my list.
haven't read the last one of your list but from looking at the summary it looks like a sort of self-insert and i'm not really a fan of that

Prince of a Dark Kingdom is great. The first couple chapters are really rocky, but it's one of the most comprehensive examples of world building out there.

Makes you wonder how long does the author intend for it to go on.
