I read it in one day when I couldn't sleep for some reason. Entertaining stuff, to say the least. It builds up the world, bit by bit, rather than just info-dump on you in several chapters in a row.

Prince of Dark Kingdom is awesome. Nuff said. One of only few Voldemorts that instantly pop up in my head when I think of memorable Voldemorts in fanfiction next to the ones from Renegade Cause and Stranger in Unholy Land.

It's not her cheating that's the problem, but her hypocrisy. She cheats in a way that potentially affects every Gryffindor game that season and thinks it's alright, but makes a federal case out of Harry affecting one game. She even says he should be expelled for it.

Yes, that potion is against quidditch rules (if he actually did it, which he did not), but I'm pretty sure hexing a player during tryouts is against quidditch rules and school rules... especially if it results in an injury, which it easily could have, considering what she did was impair the faculties of a person flying far above the ground.

Anyway, yeah, it wasn't that she cheated (which I could easily give her a pass on, since McLaggen was a jerk), it was that she later railed against Harry for the same thing - and I don't recall her apologizing, either.

Eh... I'd argue that while it's true she was no more hidebound and uptight in HBP than in the other books, her behavior in the sixth book was irrational, violent, vindictive, and hypocritical on a level that dwarfed any previous hints of such behavior in the series up to that point. Trapping Skeeter is the only thing that comes close (leaving Umbridge to the centaurs was nothing, considering what the woman had been guilty of - torture, attempted Cruciatus, illegal use of truth serum, attempted murder via dementors).

    Sounds about right.

If Harry had tried to use that "But those spells aren't Ministry of Magic approved," argument on her that she did with him, she'd have referenced the government enforced censorship in DADA the previous year, then spouted something about information wanting to be free, the march of progress, and so on, to justify her actions.

You say that like it would have been a bad thing.

Can we all just agree that HBP was one of the worst books in the Series?

My personal biggest pet peeve about that book was Harry's "lion" in his "chest" "roaring." Seriously, I actually like Harry/Ginny, and even I thought that whole bit was completely ridiculous.

I thought using Felix was not only against the rules, but actually against the law as well, which makes it a bit more serious than hexing somebody.

And I seriously don't get the 'monster' thing. JKR showed she was capable of writing a teenage crush with Cho, so how she fucked it up with Ginny, I have no idea.

I see what she was doing, its in the same ball park as butterflys in your stomach.

Did you never have such a huge crush on a girl that anytime she was near your stomach dropped out, your heart started beating, your hands got sweaty and you didnt know what to say, you got jealous anytime any guy but you spoke to her?

It may not be a great way to portray it. But it it so typically teenage that I hardly blame her for doing it. People say there was no lead up to it? So fucking what, you never got a crush on someone randomly? Never had them fill your every thought?

If you never had that when you were a teenager I pity you, because it is simultaneously the best and worst thing about being a teenager.

See, Harry's crush on Cho was portrayed like that: nervous, hands sweating, stammering, and all that and it was portrayed well. That is how I remember my teenage crushes. The monster thing though, that's going way overboard.

maybe a bit off topic but at what age did you start to read fan fiction ? And what is your favourite story?

If you include officially licensed fan fiction, I was reading Star Trek and Buffy books in my early teens. My first online fan fiction (which was Harry Potter) was at age 15, on Harry Potter discussion board forums. It wasn't until age 16 or so that I really went for it and started systematically devouring fanfiction archives.

My favourite story is probably Ectomancer by RustyRed.

    9. A now defunct Sailor Moon archive. My favorite fanfic is probably an old Transformers fic. Staying Alive: A HowTo by The Starhorse.

    Yes.

@Warlocke: Well, give or take. I can agree with 'more pronounced in HBP', I guess. But it's not as if her behaviour was totally out of the blue, at any rate (that's Harmionian territory).

I had the inner-squirrel. I got gut-punched (or run over?) by love at first sight. I didn't believe it and I didn't trust these FEEELS. So I ran the hell away. Because. Squirrel! My wife did the pursuing. I suppose this is an outlier experience for most.

    I began to read at 13. I don't have a favorite story.

Use a water purifier and that sort of thing won't happen as often. :D

I never thought much about comparing Harry's crush on Cho to the one for Ginny. The Cho crush definitely comes off as more realistic... or at least not so laughably weird.

Which, come to think of it, probably only adds to how awkwardly convenient it is to explain his sudden fixation on a love potion.

Love potions get prominently mentioned (they get name-checked in Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, then in HBP at the twins' store, and explained in detail during Slughorn's class) not long before Harry suddenly develops a bizarrely intense interest in Ginny that was almost totally absent, before.

This, coupled with Harry's more normal behavior toward Cho back when he liked her and JKR's known penchant for employing Checkov's Guns (her frequently introducing a magical effect or device a book or two before they figure heavily in the plot), makes his very new and comically powerful feelings for Ginny look unfortunately suspicious.

JKR appears to have been so preoccupied with dropping what she thought were anvil-sized clues about H/G that she missed the subtle hints she was leaving behind that seemed to point to Harry being dosed with a love potion.

Oh well, I guess what was an unfortunate oversight on JKR's part ended up being very fertile ground for fan fic authors. I won't touch on whether the resulting stories were more a bad thing than a good one.

Yeah; I think we're more or less in consensus.

The only acceptable kind of monsters in a person's chest should be chestbursters.

Harry's chest monster being a chestburster has been done before; but, I can't remember the title of the fic.
