Here's a plot-hole: Harry Potter, Ronald Wesley, and Hermione Granger never got any Special Services awards for the school, even though Harry directly saved Hogwarts at least three times at the bare minimum and the other two helped him do it.

Hogwarts was going to fucking close because of the attacks in CoS. As in permanently. Harry literally, LITERALLY, is the only reason Hogwarts made it past his second year there. Do you think he got a plaque? Fuck no. But Tom Riddle sure did for blaming Hagrid.

Both Harry and Ron received one for the Chamber of Secrets. The following is a quote from Chapter 18.

One of those things that make dislike Dumbledore. I can't help but side with Malfoy on that one. Harry deserved his points, but Ron just moved some rocks. His points are more bullshit than Neville's in PS. Ten points so that Gryffindor can get the House Cup.

Ron went down there to go and kill a Basilisk to save his sister. The fact that he was prevented from doing so, doesn't mean his efforts count for nothing.

Which doesn't mean jack shit. What Ron set out to do was brave and noble, but what he actually ended up doing is what matters. You can argue that he had no control over the rockslide, but again, doesn't matter. Truth of the matter is, all Ron did was watch over Lockhart and move some rocks. He deserved more credit for the acromantulas' pit than the Chamber.

Beaty queens who want world peace don't get Nobel Prizes.

Not many beauty queens jump down a waste pipe knowing a 60 foot snake might be waiting for them though.

Still doesn't warrant the same reward as Harry. I know that Ron is actually more awesome than people (including myself) give him credit for. Despite his shortcomings, he stood by Harry when it mattered most, but don't make him something he's not. Harry fought the basilisk and Riddle, period.

And I've strayed ways from my original point. People say Snape's House points policies are biased, but most of them conveniently forget about Dumbledore's. And don't tell me it was for any reason other than to grant Gryffindor the House Cup. I thought House points were for things related to academics. Please, tell me how fighting Voldemort is in any way related to that.

Give them a reward for Special Services, I'm all for it, but don't pretend the points were justified. And the House point issue ties directly into Dumbledore keeping a prick like Snape on staff=another in the parade of things Rowling didn't think through well enough. Snape's blatant point deducting was just a cheap to give Gryffindor a heartwarming comeback at the end. I'm done.

    Because Quidditch is so academic...

But yeah. Bitching that Harry got points for an amazing achievement because it wasn't in class is pretty whiny.

    Well, you've got a... point.

Then again, I could argue that Quidditch is P.E. For which in schools you are graded.

So? We used to get grades on 'Morals' as well in high school. Get detention and it lowers, participate in some activities which are helpful to the school and you get a higher grade.

Besides: if you can lose 50 points for being out of bounds, I find getting 60 for stopping Voldemort kind of underwhelming.

I don't know about a grade on morals, I know my behavior was looked at and it was a separate 'grade' the only purpose of which was deciding if you (given good grades in actual subjects) were eligible for a special commendation at the end of the year, making you a model student.

EDIT: I guess Religious Education, which is regrettably still a thing, could be dubbed a morals class in some capacity, though it was mostly about knowing stories and praying with everyone at the beginning and end of class. Once I turned 13 I stopped giving two shits about it and never looked back.

It's not about if 60 points was a lot or not. The point is that Dumbledore only did it to give Gryffindor the House Cup and I dare you to find some other reason.

Okay. He gave them to Harry because he felt Harry deserved them after losing 50 points while helping Hagrid. There you go, found some other reason.

Except that's not why Harry got the 60 points. If he received them at some other time, fine, your idea has merit. But Harry received his points at the ending feast, which Dumbledore did for one clear reason and it wasn't giving Harry back points he lost for helping Hagrid.

EDIT: And I end this offtopic EDIT2: which, yes, I've created, now before I get banhammered.

You know, it's generally bad form to ask for another explanation and then to immediately dismiss it and claim yours is the only valid one.

Why would he wait until the feast if he wanted Gryffindor to win? He could've given them 100 points each immediately and they still would've won. By doing it at the feast he publicly gives points to those who got a lot of harassment for losing points by doing the right thing before.

Meh, can be considered a plothole, so not really off-topic.

Then give one that makes sense.

    ---------- Post automerged at 01:46 ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 ----------

Helping Hagrid is sneaking out Norberta, right? It could be argued that the right thing would've been going to Dumbledore instead of getting yourself caught quite stupidly. Harry already knew Dumbledore would bend rules after the Mirror of Erised.

Didn't think about that. And I apologize for being a cunt for a moment there. I got worked up for no reason.

It could also be argued that "Harry Potter and the Responsible Adults" would be quite the shitty book.

We're splitting hairs here at this point.

All depends on how they would go about being responsible.

By the way, Harry didn't "know Dumbledore would bend the rules" for Norberta because of the mirror. The entire time in the book they're all worried about being caught, so even if there was a reasonable assumption that it might have happened, it was not IC for Harry to think that.

No actually, it doesn't. We've read those fics before. They fucking suck.

You were told in book one that wizards lack common sense. It's used to move the plot, and it's justified. Get over it.
