I've never played any human v human pokemon, and no games past emerald, be honest, would I just get slaughtered in this?

Probably, but if you're interested in playing competitive it'd be good experience.

Smogon has some the previews of the XY Pokemon analysis articles out. Just click on OU Previews and OU Full Analysis. You should also be aware that Mega Pokemon exist. The ones you'll probably be seeing are Mega Charizard Y, Mega Pinsir, and Mega Mawile. There's also a bunch of gen 6 Pokemon that you should know about, like Talonflame.

I have to go out now, but if you want any information on the gen 6 metagame, ask and I'll be happy to give it.

 

So I just tried doing my first battle against anyone and it said my team was rejected because the mega pokemon aren't holding their mega-granting item.

I'm torn between basic pokemon of their kind or using the mega item. How do mega pokemon work?

 

You have to choose a regular Pokemon then give them their Mega Stone. When you send them out, the Pokemon will have the option of Mega Evolving. A Pokemon must hold a Mega Stone to Mega Evolve. You can choose not to Mega evolve it during battle, but once you do, you can't un-Mega evolve it, even if you switch it out.

 

I just went with the non mega variants.

I can't tell if you are serious or not because there is one fairly unknown Shuckle set that shits over everything while the rest of the common ones are meh tier.
