The Open Way has been updated, and Rhaegar actually have a brain. It was a pleasant suprise.

 

I'm just curious about what Rhaegar's end-game might be with all this scheming about.

Also, I'm dropping "So Soars" from here on. Apparently, Euron Greyjoy raided Bear Island and made every adult drink shade of the evening, thus turning them into bears.

There's only so much silly shit I can take and all the numerous subplots/sideplots that keep popping up are just too much for me.

Another irritating thing about So Soars is Ned the nanny, does he really have to pick up every orphan he comes across?

 

19 chapters and 50k words is a bit much to suddenly pull off Rhaegar the Wise and Sly king. Espescially when we had Rhaella bemoaning her firstborn's madness and the road he'd taken that is plunging the realm into chaos. If Rhaegar is really preparing for the Long Night he goes about it in an interesting way.

 

Eh, I went into reading So Soars expecting to actually see people turning into bears with the way you guys are complaining about it. Instead it was just a claim by a child who might not have understood what she was seeing or could've been hallucinating. I'm hoping that the adults turning into bears is metaphorical.

Second, since there are at most a handfull of decent asoiaf buried amongst the seemingly thousands of non-epic prose where 13-year old girls rip the characters of the show and insert them in their local high-school as some kind of weird mastrubatory semi-diary I figured there was room enough in the thread for rec'ing RPG's too (since the door is partially opened on that front).

Might be slightly over the top as far as supernatural elements are concerned (though shouldn't be a problem if you enjoy dragon of the north) but interesting and active updates.

Not sure if it's long enough to truly rec. Robert Baratheon from birth with everything up to the GM and Dice Gods as such significant deviation from canon.

Realise that this is a fanfiction thread but seems like it's mostly about confirming that So soars the young falcon does indeed suck balls at the moment, feel free to shoot down, inslut, delete, and generally fuck this derailment if it's inappropriate.

 

It's not that SB is overcrowded (though it is), it's that someone was trolling the forum not so long ago. No clue when the issue will be resolved.

 

I think the point of his character is that his madness is a fixation upon the Long Night. He's got this idea of what is needed to stop it and he'll go to any end to do so. It's made him nutty, but also somewhat of a tragic figure as his attempts to starve off the apocalypse end up ruining everything in the now.

 

I get it that is the reason for his madness, what I'm displeased with is that we had 18 chapters presenting his insanity(rumors, plans, counter-plans, assassinations, and the aftermath of Rhaegar's actions) and in chapter 19 we suddenly find out that it's less of a full-blown insanity and more of a dangerous obsession, fixation as you said.

We're also shown that he is cognizant of what is happening around him(Lannister plot, Dorne being wroth), and worse I didn't get a vibe of madness from Rhaegar more of a tragic figure.

I'm dissatisfied with how the exposition was handled so far. We had this whole build-up - another mad king - that petered out in chapter 19. I hoped for an insane and dangerous Rhaegar Targaryen, instead we get this wishy-washy tragic dragon who tries to save all and fucks up everything in the process.

I had my reservations about this fanfic, especially the number of sub-plots but after c.19 I'm on the fence.

 

Whatever happened to Ned Stark in The Open Way? I honestly forgot by now.

Which probably fits in with preparing for the Long Night in one way or another. At least to Rhaegar.

 

Is there a fic where Jon accepts Stannis' offer? I'm kind of curious how that might have gone on, if he'd just taken it. I'd like it to be decently written too, but hey this is fanfic, so I'll take what I can get.

 

Probably not what you wanted, but this was the first thing that came to my mind when you asked that. It is a guy playing the Crusader Kings Two Game of Thrones Mod as Jon Snow and he accepts Stannis' offer. The links is here

 

Not what I asked for, but I enjoyed it nonetheless up to a certain point where Lyanna/Rhaegar shit had come up. I stopped reading there, but everything before that was done well.

I played as Jon Snow once in the AFFC period, took Stannis' offer and even managed to kill most of his enemies while Mace Tyrell held him in prison. For two years I fought to release him and just on the cusp of reaching Highgarden, Tyrells had Stannis and his family executed, for which I repaid them by exterminating their own family, down to the smallest child.

 

Why don't you write a fic about it Odran? You seem to know your ASOIAF.

 

English isn't my first language, and I find myself lacking in ways to appropriately describe plots, schemes, wars and battles in ways that would entertain and enthrall any person that happened to read it.

That is not to say I haven't written stuff. I just never share or publish it. So far I have 3 different ASOIAF fics:

The first one is a HP crossover, in the sense a Harry Potter ends up in Westeros, but not in the usual timeline where he can influence and fix things, nor is that his goal. In fact, I misplaced him some two hundred years before Aegon the Conqueror was ever born and landed him in the hotspot of Bolton-Stark animosities. Bear in mind this is a more adult Harry Potter whose crossing over the worlds has muddled his memories of his past life, though he remains aware of his own abilities. He's probably more of a OC at that point as I have stripped him of childish delusions and foolish ideals (though not to the point that he's cruel or vicious, merely pragmatic), else he'd have been killed in Westeros pretty quickly.

The second is a short (by short I mean less than 30k words) Jon-centric fic where he survives the attempted assassination, the threat of Others is dealt with and the free folk are being slowly assimilated into the North's population, but the theme of the fic focuses not on that but rather on the prospects Jon starts to receive, despite still being a member of the Night's Watch. Prospects... not quite what they're are actually, more like temptations, especially since they're offered by women, each one offering something he wanted for quite a while, but never had the opportunity to gain it before. The fic ends with a slightly more mythical/magical twist than you could expect, but I just felt like writing it that way.

The third fic is one that abuses the whole 'five times something different happened/someone lived when they should have died' and I thoroughly, in a literary sense of the word, trash Lyanna Stark, making her ever regret living past the Tower of Joy in ways that don't include physical abuse of her or the ones she cares/cared for. Was a bit tricky to write, had to restrain myself to not go outright bashing, to give her own perspective some merit and not just vent my dislike for the fandom that is so thoroughly enamored with the idea of a dragon prince and a she-wolf in love.

 

A shame that you feel that way, those fics seems to be rather interesting, especially the Lyanna one.
