Just finished the first two books in Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller trilogy. Patiently waiting for the third, what would people recommend that I read in the mean time? Looking for something similar to the genre, if not the writing style.

Blood Song is great, and a lot of people think it's got a similar feel, what with both involving somewhat unreliable narrators telling the story of their life.

Second that recommendation, read Blood Song some time ago and really enjoyed it. Also has a sequel that is supposed to be coming soon, called Tower Lord.

Early July for the sequel, iirc. And the previews have been very positive :D

Blood Song was incredible; definitely feels inspired by The Kingkiller Chronicles, but I think I enjoyed it more.

Read the First Law trilogy. I liked it as somewhat of a deconstruction of your typical fantasy story, but after glancing over the novels he's done since makes me feel that Abercrombie is a bit of a one note writer. I'm still somewhat excited for Half a King as it seems like it will be entirely centered around a Glokta type character (who was the best part of the First Law series), I worry that he doesn't actually have more stories to tell other than "war and revenge are bad m'kay"

Just finished Blood Song, which I only knew about through the recommendation in this thread. I greatly enjoyed it and am eagerly awaiting the sequel. According to Amazon, Tower Lord comes out July 1.

I wasn't able to find the book's title under a search, so I assume it hasn't been mentioned before, but I really enjoyed Ari Marmell's Hot Lead, Cold Iron. It's basically urban fantasy set during 1930s Chicago gangland, where the main character, Mick Oberon, is a P.I. who happens to be a Faerie.

Being urban fantasy, being set in Chicago, and featuring Faerie is apt to draw comparisons to the Dresden Files, but Marmell keeps things fresh and interesting. Also, the book reads much more like a noir or hardboiled detective work than the Dresden Files does. The book also has one of the most interesting characterizations of where the Faerie live. Definitely looking forward to future books in this series.

Is it just the Tower Lord sample on his website, or is there more somewhere?

EDIT: Found a chapter 1 excerpt on Amazon.

EDIT2: There's a novella of the Kingkiller Chronicles coming out in October? Blurb describes it as centering around Auri. http://www.amazon.com/Slow-Regard-Silent-Things-Kingkiller/dp/0756410436/

I loved the Raven's shadow. Looking forward to Tower Lord.

Now I'm firmly back into the reading routine. Anything that's similar?

I haven't read Hot Lead, Cold Iron yet, but the concept sounds similar to The Vampire Files series by P.N. Elrod. The main character is a vampire who works as a PI in post-Prohibition Chicago. Most of the plots center around human villains and mysteries. His vampire nature is basically a card up his sleeve when dealing with mortals.

Yes! glad I didn't have to wait too long. I'm ready.

I was going to mention my 700th post until I realized that there are people with 8,000. So yeah never mind that.

I just read the Jay Rubin translation of Haruki Marukami's Norwegian Wood. I've got to say I can't recommend it enough. Probably the best way I can describe it is as a literary version of Lost in Translation.

Just started Tower Lord. Literally just finished Blood Song.

If this book is as good as the first one... I'll be quite happy.

Got Tower Lord yesterday. Planning on reading it soon. I guess we should start up a separate thread so we don't clog this thread

Read Blood Song yesterday, was a gripping read. Only problems I had were with the grammar (mostly in the early chapters) and the main romance - I didn't think it was fleshed out nearly enough. Great ending though, really made me want to go get Tower Lord straight away.

I'm sorry, but I really wouldn't call that a 'romance'.
