    Imagination?

Also a question for you junkies. Does anyone remember if it is canon or fanon that Robb believed the North could have supported more troops if he had taken more time to rally his forces?

    Inferred from canon.

    1) Robb marched south in relative hurry, and would not have had the time to gather all of his forces, especially given the size of the North.

    2) Robb marched with around 20,000 men. This is, historically, the effective upper limit of a medieval army. Most medieval armies were, in fact, smaller - around 5,000 to 10,000. Any larger than 20,000 and the army would be to big to actually deploy on a given battlefield, or to march coherently, or even to supply properly. All this suggests that there were probably more men than could have been pressed into military service - just that it wasn't practical to do so.

    3) We see a parallel during Robert's Rebellion. Tywin Lannister had to march to King's Landing quickly, to take the city before Robert's forces could do it themselves. Tywin marched with 20,000 men, although we know from the War of the Five Kings that the Lannisters fielded not just an initial 40,000 (twice Robb's) but also gathered another 10,000 or so after Whispering Wood. All this suggests that 20,000 or thereabouts is what logistical realities force upon a military leader - and it's not just a matter of population size. Again, this suggests that Robb could have formed a bigger army, but it wouldn't have been viable.

Renly's 100,000 moved slow as fuck not because Renly was lazy or retarded, but because they had no other choice. In the end, when he actually had to intercept Stannis, he just took a vanguard (probably around 5,000 to 10,000) and headed towards Storm's End, leaving the rest with Mace Tyrell and Randall Tarly.

What is this story about? Could you give us a summary of some kind because the one the author left is just insufficient: A stranger comes to Westeros.

A man on our earth somehow spontaneously jumps into different worlds (think Sliders).

He goes to a few worlds first, the duration only lasting days. When he jumps to the Westeros world, he stays there for years.

This is all somehow televised, and there are segments with the earth reactions.

Bah! I'll admit it's a guilty pleasure for me lol. Also there is the fact that I was waiting in an airport, incredibly bored. So anything would have been fun then.

    It's terrible.

Barely readable by it own right, it tells us a story of a super soldier from some sci-fi setting, who is being filmed at all times, and how he lands in somewhere in Westeros, while broadcasting a show "The Traveler" for viewers at home.

The show is watered down for simple Americans to understand, and the way narration goes, it turns into a mock retelling.

Any and all conversations are hilariously horrible. Observe:

Summary: Seven years after the end of the war, Jon Snow struggles with the demons of his past and withdraws into despair at the Wall. Meanwhile Sansa fights to maintain the peace at the court of Jon’s brother Aegon, the dangerous and unpredictable Dragon King.

So, pretty good so far. Aegon summons Jon to attend court, but Jon has no interest so he sends Sansa as his rep. I like that the author decided to not go with the usual fanon relationship between Jon and Aegon. In this Aegon hates Jon because he feels inferior him for many reasons.

I should warn you all now; it's not shown, but there's a rape of a character and the following chapter is the immediate aftermath between the two.

Huh, a bit too Sansa-centric for my taste, but at least the author says in that last chapter we're going to get a different POV from here on.

Also, Aegon seems to be proving true to his family's most notable trait. I wasn't really expecting that, in fact I expected the author to make the Sansa/Aegon thing in the tags all gushy and mushy. Happy to be proven wrong though. What a twist.

Yeah I read that. Major thing is that Sansa finally skinchanged. Traumatic events seem to kick start the ability.

Yeah, I was expecting more drivel of Sansa being perfect and everything going her way post war of five kings. This story said nope so hard in the last chapter. Totally excited for how Jon will answer.

Can anybody post (re-post, if it's already been in this thread) some good during the Rebellion stories? Like canon, or as close to canon as possible. Preferably from Ned's pov

I found one, Of Dragons and Roses and a Second Hand Match. Would link but Ao3 isn't working for me right now. Yeah, IDK, just got hit by an urge to read some of the rebellion.

Is it canon-compliant in terms of the ultimate outcome of the rebellion? Or is it a different take on the whole thing? And does it focus more on characters or on battles and the like?

There's the link. Had to give it up like 15 chapters in, still at the tourney of Harrenhal. Too fluffy, and personally, I like the whole Ned / Ashara theories out there so this story got off to the wrong foot a few chapters in. I was looking for a more Ned-centric story, maybe even some badass Robert chapters, not this romancy Rhaegar and Lyanna fluff. At this point I'm almost hoping tWoW will confirm Rhaegar as a pscyho rapist.

I'm thinking Rhaegar was more the calm kind of insane, like a sociopath who easily takes on roles. Everything written on him in the books seems "fake" or acted out. He even started learning fighting only because he might need it in the future.

    Best I avoid it then.

Why TWoW and not ADoS? Because of what happened to Jon in his last chapter in ADwD? Or is there something else I missed that might hinted at the reveal coming in the next book?

That's how most people tend to see him, IMO. On the other hand, a very vocal minority believes Rhaegar could do no wrong, in fact they even blame Brandon and Rickard (?) for getting killed.

Granted, Brandon could have been more subtle in his demand to meet Rhaegar for an accounting of his actions, but it hardly warranted him strangling himself while trying to save his father who was being roasted in full armor above a fire.

What's worse is how the Kingsguard and others present at the court did nothing to stop such an atrocity from happening. For that alone, they should have all been summarily executed, or sent to the Wall, because discharging them from service would have proved most unwise, just like Joffrey showed us when he discharged Barristan.

Stannis had the right idea, to purge clean the entire King's Landing of those who stood by and did nothing.

I know a Harry Potter post would be a better first, but Odran just reminded me of a fic I found recently.

    Black Storms

Keeps faithful to the books’ detail down to the age gaps between characters, unless my memory betrays me. Brandon Stark and younger Stannis are plausibly characterized, and young Robert Baratheon is not shafted or switched for his canon, Cersei-leeched self. ‘Stanny’ and its debut as the very first bit of dialogue would usually constitute a bad sign; I didn’t find that to be the case here. No slash, just friendship. A decent read.

Its ending leaves plenty of room for future and peripheral despair. Y’know, for those fans who like the tragedy vibes of canon. See Robert’s offhand remark about appeasing the Florents and imagine Selyse/Jaime.

People don't tend to cross kings on a whim. They probably rightly thought that they'd end up roasting right next to them if they tried to stop it.
