    Okay, here go mine:

For me, the best ASoIaF story that I have enjoyed, if the Prince that was Promised doesn't qualify due to being a crossover, although, I do think crossovers should be included, is probably this one

Changed Circumstances by Failed to De-anon

Basically, Elia and her children survive and the ripple effects of this action. Not finished, decent length and still gets updated. Writing is solid and I like the premise and the characters the story focuses on.

A best story for Naruto is difficult to choose, if only because there are so many good ones out there. The ones mentioned in this thread are all good choices, but if we go by Cheddar's criteria of being the most Naruto, I think I would go with

Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen

This just has the best world-building regarding to Naruto, not really changing anything but making the stuff that is there fit seamlessly together, build a functioning ninja society with what canon gave to us, and building working levels of friendship between the characters, so much so, that I believe the decisions they make for their friends. The changes the main character makes to world are also believable, limited by her rank and strength. At times it follows canon maybe a bit too close, but seeing that its very goal is to take canon and the fillers and craft it into a story, I think this works very well.

The little things make this story for me, like the mentioning of children's books of the Yellow Flash, that there are stretches with songs for the kids so they can learn easier, acts of friendship and camaraderie between the teams, explanations of stuff like why Zabuza, a master assassin would attack like he did, all that works for me. Not finished but still updated.

Other mentions would be One Small Kindness and its sequel by DigitalTart, The Girl From Whirlpool by SilverShine (most of her stories, actually), Time and Again by KyLewin, Oh God Not Again by Sarah1281, Reload by Case13

Don't think we have to discuss Dragon Age stories much, the winner there should be obvious.

Victory at Ostagar by Arsinoe de Blassenville

AU with female Cousland Protag, where they won the Ostagar battle and the changes that brings, alongside a better exploration of the world of Thedas and the nobility and how having a human noble as your party leader actually influences things, with plenty of politics and world-building. Finished.

For Teen Titans, it's the Ascension Trilogy by Cyberwrath9, with

    Avatar being the first story.

Think for some this had a slow start, although not for me, but it really is an excellent story, with great character arcs and changes throughout. Worm reminded me of this at times, since the tone could be a bit similar. Two stories finished, third still gets updates.

Hammered Down by Tomas the Betrayer is hands down the best Bleach story.

Very long and finished, it kinda Game of Throned Bleach, changing it into a really good story, strong in characters, plots and twists. As in, before this story I really disliked Bleach and after this, well, the manga is still bad but at least it proves the point that a good enough author can make anything good. Has a sequel, Lifted Up, in the works that is updated from time to time, but not very often. Updates tend to be long, though.

Runner up would be Uninvinted Guests, for being rip-bustingly hilarious, even on the fourth reread. Just pure awesome, that story.

    For Tomb Raider, it's

The Camera Loves You by Asynca, it also has a finished sequel but the chances are high that Asynca is going to write a third story for it, after she is finished with her original work Under My Skin.

Good plot, good writing, good characters, good action, and the author writes uncomfortable really, really well. There is a scene in the Dreaming that was hard to get through because it made my skin crawl. The romance also works and it manages to be a captivating read from start to finish.

Not sure if Rosario + Vampire has much of a story pool to draw from, but

He Who Fights Monsters by hawker-748 was an excellent and gripping story. It was what Supernatural always desperately wanted to be and never really managed, where a vanilla normal human is able to hold his own against monsters by virtue of quick thinking, planning and ruthlessness. The romance aspect, if one can call it that, was great as well. Never read the manga or saw the anime but this is just awesome.

For Harry Potter, same with Naruto, really. Too many stories that are good to decide on one. The stories that I remember best as good despite reading probably too much of them would be Inverarity's stuff like the Alexandra Quick series and his Hogwarts Houses Divided story. Cultural Anthropology is great as well, as was Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived by Santi. Shezza's Denarian Trilogy was really enjoyable as well. Recall Alice When She Was Just Small was an odd one, for its focus on Dudley but still good. But yeah, too many.

    For Assassin's Creed, it's

Bitter Leaves and Blossoms Bright by callalili

Unfinished and probably dead, but still excellent, IIRC. Follows a female OC and her introduction into the Order and how it goes from there. Plays in the time of Altair.
    For Ranma 1/2 it's

The Dark Lords trilogy by Claymade with The Dark Lords of Nerima being the first one.

Yeah, it is a crossover with Sailor Moon but it still captures the feeling of Ranma perfectly, with the humour, the excellent fightscenes, how the characters behave, argue, fail, make things worse, it fits the tone of the manga perfectly but it also is able to get serious like the manga does and Sailor Moon fits perfectly into this, tone and all, although I admit, I am not that well versed in Sailor Moon outside of Ranma crossovers. First two stories are finished, third still is updated regularly.

Also a good contender is Lathis' The Titans and The Lost Boy, which is a crossover with Teen Titans.

The Neverending Road by Leitbur is probably the best one for Hikaru no Go

Really long, as it says, picks up where the manga finishes and manages to hold the tone pretty well. Only rival would probably be the story where Hikaru goes back in time and lets Sai play for him but fuck me, I always forget how that story is called and well, I think it's offline as well, but I seem to remember that we had a thread where someone linked a dl for it.

This one is rather short, too short, really, and unfinished and almost certainly dead, but for Fate Stay Night

Thu'um of a Distant Utopia by Deviate's Fish/Delusional Fishies is my favourite story.

Yeah, I know, crossover with Skyrim but I just love every single thing about this story. The writing style, the choice of words, the premise, the characters, the tone and atmosphere, just everything and there is no amount of people I wouldn't sacrifice if it meant that this story would be picked up again.

But I guess Chaos Theory by Mozco, The Hill of Swords by Gabriel Blessing and Path of the King by Neoalfa are better choices due to their length.

For My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, it's probably

    Fallout Equestria
    by Kkat.

Really long, very well written and compelling. Has been two years since I've read it, but I still remember this being really, really good.

Runner up would probably be The Lunar Rebellion by Chengar Quordath and Turnabout Storm

    For Detective Conan, it's probably

The Mystery of Conan Edogawa by funvince

For Fullmetal Alchemist it should be

We That Are Young by Stoplight Delight and its sequel Shall Never See Too Much.

Yeah, the backstory of Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye. Has been a while since I last read it but I remember it being rather good.

For Avatar the Last Airbender, I am really not sure.

    Another Brother by AvocadoLove,

    Enslaved by sharkflip

    and Morality Chain by Pureauthor

are all good, but it has also been some time since I last read them, so, not sure which of them was the best. Tend to go with Enslaved because it has a refreshing take on Water Tribe culture.

For Batman it has to be

Not Playing With A Full Deck by 4ofCups

The Joker kidnaps Lois and tortures her while Batman tries to find her in time. Really fucked up story with a seriously scary Joker but excellent nonetheless. Long and unfinished but I don't think it's dead, even though the last update was 8 months ago.

Honourable mention for Cassandra Cain, the Batgirl . Admittedly, not nearly as good as the other story but I love Batgirl, so, there.

Honour Thy Masters by Gabriel Blessing for Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple stories.

    crossover, yeah, but still good.

    Will add more later.

I agree that "Dreaming of Sunshine" is the cream of the crop. Along with Shezza's and Menace's fics it makes my Top3 fanfics in the Naruto fandom. Easily.

But Naruto isn't the protagonist, so it's kind of hard again to recommend it as a fanfic flagship.

He is one of the main characters, though and he has all the central qualities that Naruto has, his compassion, his will to never give up, his strength and tenacity to succeed, and his flaws as well, all recognizable through the eyes of a competent protagonist that Naruto is changed into in most fics, which kinda makes him lose his essential Narutoness in most cases.

I mean, I love Nugar's, Shezza's and Menace's stories but you can't deny that Naruto in there is rather different from canon Naruto in many regards whereas Dreaming of Sunshine kept canon Naruto without making him annoying.

Still, all the stories mentioned are deserving of being regarded as the "top" Naruto story, so no real argument from me. It really depends on what mood one is anyway, there are so many good Naruto stories, it really depends on what one wants to read.

Since I missed out on the opportunity, I would hands-down second the recommendation for Hammered Down for Bleach and Avatar for Teen Titans. I'd also support Life in Konoha's ANBU over The Howling Wind as a recommendation for Naruto since whilst the latter is closer to the source's storytelling, the former is more closesly tied to the canon world and explores it in great depth as well as its superior writing quality. Dreaming of Sunshine's damn good too but I'd put in third behind those two.

    1 - Batman - Legend - by Polyphoenix

Based on the Nolanverse Batman. It follows on from the Dark Knight with an original storyline that serves to have Batman continue his crusade against crime whilst circumventing the police that hunt him. All the while, Gotham being dragged down into mob wars, murders and chaos. Includes appearances from Catwoman, Black Mask, the Riddler and Poison Ivy.

2 - Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - Game Theory - by Immatrael

Out of a list of stories I tried to read from this fandom, only three of them didn't bore me. This stands head and shoulders over the rest. It's a rewrite that focuses on and explores the science fiction of a 'verse with space ships and magical girls rather than on the idea that it's a magical girl show. At the same time, it doesn't lose sight of Nanoha and Fate whilst they get embroiled in magical and emotional conflict.

    3 - Firefly - Forward - by Peptuck

An original continuation of Firefly after Serenity. The Firefly continue to try and make a living on the raggedy edge as their characters and pasts are explored and grow into a close-knit crew with a special focus on the mystery of River.

I tried to read "People Lie." I'd have stopped after Chapter 1 if not for it's inclusion in this thread. As it was I couldn't make it past Chapter 5. I'd put it at 2.5/5.

But I agree with all the others suggested. Moot point, at any rate.

I'd Recommend this series of Sherlock fics for consideration: The Baker Street Series by magicbunni

I gave the entire series a 4/5, because they aren't perfect, but it's still the best I've read in the fandom that wasn't a crossover.

Well... its kind of hard to find DAO fics that aren't just blight retreads, let me have a look.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5875319/1/The-Great-Escape - I remember there being some cloak and dagger landsmeety stuff towards the end of this one, but its long as hell and primarily an adventure fic with a pretty saccharine romance. Well written if I remember right, but on indefinite hiatus.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7300672/1/Corin - This one is about the end of the blight and trying to keep Ferelden together afterwards, so there is a bit of political maneuvering, with Orlais and the Chantry and whatnot. I'm quite fond of this fic, but again with the romance, seems to be the price of admission for Dragon Age stuff, since romance features so heavily in the games. Hasn't updated in a few months, but the author has taken long breaks between chapters before.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8644401/14/A-Political-Marriage - Mostly the same premise as the previous one, but less idyllic, and a lot shorter.

That's what I dragged up going through my favorites, but its been ages since I've read these, so there's no guarantee of quality.

    Power Rangers

A Darker Shade of Green by Unromantic Poetress

Wasn't this the best Power Rangers story?

    For Percy Jackson, it's probably

Deep as the Sea by Ryuugi Shi

Crossover with Dresden Files probably not going to be finished, due to being a Ryuugi story but one can't discount the possibility of an update, maybe when the new Percy Jackson books come out.

Roman Roulette by Travis Jamerson wasn't that bad either, it is also not a crossover, it is finished and has a decent length but it doesn't really measure up to most of the other stories posted here. There are a lot of good and cute PJ oneshots but not really much in longer stories.

For Puella Magi Madoka Magica, it either goes to

    Resonance Days
    by TakerFoxx

Awesome adventure story with the perfect PMMM tone where Kyoko and Sayaka (or rather, Octavia) are in the afterlife which, as par for the course for PMMM isn't that nice of a place.

    or

Puella Stellae Madoka Magica by Snowflames

Which is a crossover with WH40k, so yeah, that world is a much happier place now. Crossover works really well.

It's all in the Details by Colleen for Supernatural

Can't guarantee it since it has been some time but I remember this being rather good. Could be remembering wrong though.

For Sword Art Online, it would most likely be

Fairy Dance of Death by Catsy

Pretty good, don't think I am up to date with the later chapters but what I've read was solid. Makes me wish this was what the anime had been.

Everybody has an anchor to hold on to. Something that keeps them within their limits. Someone that keeps them human.Taylor Hebert's is gone.

It's the closest to original Worm, but with a Taylor that just goes full on vigilante.

    Runner-up
    Carnage by TheManWithaPlan
Taylor ends up becoming the Butcher 14 and the most wanted parahuman in Brockton Bay.

Close to original Worm in tone with a good Taylor characterization, but the premise is very off the canon-rails, in a good way.

    Lord of the Rings

Boromir's Return By: Osheen Nevoy Boromir awakens from his death and finds himself in an unexpected situation. Basically book universe with some AU bits, but inspired by Sean Bean. Complete! Chapter 29 up, nine years after I started writing this.

From the DLP library thread. Mostly throwing it up because everything else I've encountered in LOTR fandom has been crap.

    ---

I remember Warhammer 40k had some good fics, but I've lost all my favourites of that genre after forgetting my first FF.net account password. Perhaps someone could chime in on that front?

You can definitely see the writer become better over time in that story. It also changes tone completely after the first arc and becomes much better imho. But I can understand not wanting to slog through the first chapters. They're pretty bad.

Otherwise I don't have much to add. It's downright impossible to recommend the "best" fanfic in a fandom unless it's really small. People like different genres and have different pet peeves. If you think a story is the best in a fandom, why not put it in the review board?

Justice League - The Last - by Rigil Kent

A tale of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman when they first meet at the beginning of their heroic adventures, start the Justice League and create a legend that spans across the ages. Each chapter covers a year with thirty years in total, starting from Man of Steel but covering villains and events from the comicverse.

Presumptuous of me considering I don't even read JL fanfiction so I've nothing to compare it to, but it's damn good.

Ah, yes, Rigil Kent. He wrote the only NCIS fic that I can say is good. Though it's abandoned, he did end it, in a way.

Champions aren't trained, they're made, through coincidence and hardships, potential is forged into ability. Thanks so much for the replies, everyone. Keep 'em coming. Hopefully we can build a massively oversized list and then whittle it down to just the cream of the crop. If we - hopefully - get to more than 100 fandoms, priority will be split between the size of the fandom and the quality of the fic when decided what to cut.

After hearing what you've thought about this, I've decided to include a separate, shorter list of crossovers as an addendum. Maybe up to ten or so. You guys are right - some crossovers are truly exceptional and deserve the attention. I'm just hesitant to prioritise them over another which sticks to one fandom. The big concern is that we'd end up with 50+ HP/??? entries.

Here's a loose list of what we've got so far.

Assassin's Creed - Bitter Leaves and Blossoms Bright
Avatar: the Last Airbender - Three Families or Enslaved
Batman - Not Playing With A Full Deck or Legend
    Bleach - Hammered Down
    Chuck - What Fates Impose
Detective Conan - The Mystery of Canon Edogawa
Dragon Age - Victory at Ostagar
Final Fantasy - The Lion of Ivalice
    Firefly - Forward
Fullmetal Alchemist - We That Are Young
Game of Thrones - The North Remembers or A Better Fate
Gurren Lagann - Sound of Pulling Heaven Down
    Harry Potter - fuck knows
Hikaru No Go - The Neverending Road
How to Train Your Dragon - Hitchups
    Justice League - The Last
Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple - Honour Thy Masters
Kingkiller Chronicles - Behind the Curtain of Dusk
Legend of Zelda - The Golden Power
Lord of the Rings - Boromir's Return
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - Game Theory
Mass Effect - Interstitium or Fight for the Lost
Naruto - Dreaming of Sunshine or Konoha's ANBU or The Howling Wind
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the N2 Mine
Pokemon - Game of Champions or The Sun Soul
Power Rangers - A Darker Shade of Green
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Resonance Days
Rosario + Vampire - He Who Fights Monsters
    Spider-Man - Polarity
Star Wars - Son of Suns trilogy
Sword Art Online - Fairy Dance of Death
    Teen Titans - Ascension trilogy
Tomb Raider - The Camera Loves You
Vampire the Masquerade - Bitter Escape
    Worm - Cenotaph

    Crossovers:
HP/GoT - The Prince Who Was Promised
Ranma 1/2/Sailor Moon - The Dark Lords trilogy
    Fallout/MLP:FiM - Fallout Equestria

As before, more suggestions and comments on existing ones are eagerly wanted. There are a few where I've listed multiple options - your feedback on which to cut would be great.

After making my decision to include crossovers, I wondered if it would be worth doing the same for oneshots, but ultimately decided not to. There are too many of them, and they don't represent the same invested body of work that longer fiction does.

As superheroes and super villains are growing in number by the day, Peter Parker is stuck juggling the choice between himself and the other personality occupying his life. Donning the famous red mask, he web-slings his way through a world with exciting opportunities as the wonderful, rather insane and Amazing Spider-Man! Amazing Spider-Man/the Avengers/various Marvel characters!

Despite it being a Amazing Spider-man/Avengers crossover in reality it's just a Spider-Man focused Marvel fanfiction. I believe it really got Peter's voice down pretty good. Gotta put this up for review when I finally have a decent connection.

All Roads Lead to Denerim by Sparrow Nightrunner

All Origins may be true, but that doesn't mean it'll be easy to take out that pesky archdemon. Between a xenophobic Dalish, a reformed playboy, a mage prodigy with a bad temper, and others, getting through the Blight without strangling one another (or Alistair, for that matter) will be hard enough.

I won't ever accept that the best one in the fandom is a Cousland/Loghain paring, despite how well written it is. I believe while this one may not have the quality of Victory at Ostagar, still manages to show the real spirit of DAO better.

And I second Chains of Blood. It really gives DA2 it's due.

Avatar: Hands down the best in this fandom is the Semper Victoria series.

Humanity is on the brink of self-destruction, and unobtanium may be only hope for our species. While humanity begins their return, they find only a few surviving scientists between them and an increasingly active Eywa, and the promise of a war that would alter the fate of all. A story where Pandora is not an Eden, where desperate battles will determine who lives... and who dies.

Danny Phantom: Phantom's Sketchbook might not be a grand epic, but it's a great character piece and one of the best fics for this fandom.

Mr. Lancer finds himself in an unparalleled situation, he has access to something which can give him incredable insight into the personal workings of Amity Park's local ghost teen hero, Danny Phantom. COMPLETE!

Halo: Halo: Stand, Five Feet High by Soulguard is the best series in the fandom. The second and third fics in the series really expanded the universe, though it's all AU now that more games have come out.

Book 1: The Covenant Civil War has begun, and the grunts are caught in the middle. But something odd is happening to them, something that the elites must accept or fear. Savor your Grunty goodness.

Inheritance Cycle/Eragon: Flawed Perfection by our own Sesc stands head and shoulders above everything else in the fandom.

Set after Eldest. He tried to forget her, but found that he couldn't. - As Eragon struggles with his feelings and tries to understand Arya, he starts learning more about himself; all the while fighting to save Alagaësia. And there's still one last egg…

Kick-Ass: Precocious Crush is quite possibly the best Kick-Ass fic around, despite the odd format. It's based after the first movie, but is written in diary format. Very unique, and surprisingly enjoyable.

So, you meet someone who gets you. You have fun together, you like each other, and they're cute. But he says you're too young. What are you supposed to do? Just let it go? -Cover Art by Coasting-

Pendragon: It might be the best fic around by virtue of being one of the only fics around, haha. Waking Dream is a neat fic based after the end of the series.

When Bobby Pendragon sleeps, he sees a woman with dark skin and strong eyes. Post SoH.

Warhammer 40k: The entire Cain and Abel series is amazing, particularly if you enjoyed the Ciaphas Cain books.

Commissar Ariel Abel didn't want much in life, just to do her job and be noticed for her hard labour. Too bad her career is about to be overshadowed by the enormous, and fraudulent, reputation of Hero of the Imperium, Commissar Ciaphas Cain.

Wheel of Time: Ten Songs to Reforge a Sword by Halcyon7 is the best fic here, despite my love of Shezza's old fics. It's locked behind a membership wall on TFF, so here's a copy in RTF/MOBI/EPUB.

No summary available, but it's a oneshot about Mat.

Of the 100 fandoms I have in my library, I agreed with pretty much every recommendation given so far, so here are some fandoms that haven't gotten any love yet. __________________

For Detective Conan, I think these were pretty good:

    Heavy Silences

MK/DC. "We would like Kid delivered by the 24th. For every day you're late, one bright face vanishes from the world." Children kidnapped, Nakamori has only one place to turn for help. Kaitou Kid. Epilogue: The end. Of a kind.

Actually, I disagree - the best part of Menace's story is that despite all the changes, he absolutely feels like Naruto even through his PoV and from what other characters see.

Then again, the fact that Dreaming of Sunshine is less AU might count for something in terms of being selected as a representative work...

But yes, all three are amazing.

Edit - Man, this thread was a great idea. I vaguely remember a lot of these stories, but will probably have to reread them now.

Dreaming of Sunshine would be 50x better if the main character was an OC instead of an SI. Wouldn't take more than an hour of editing either
