Covert Affairs, probably the best Spy-series currently on air. The plot is ok and the lead character is also great.
I especially like that it has episodes outside of America as that makes it a lot more believable.

 

Unfortunately, the spy stuff in Covert Affairs is terribly unbelievable.

EDIT: RE: other shows. That is true, you can't do TV when you acknowledge that once every intelligence agency knows your protagonist's name and face they can't work as a spy anymore.

 

Oh well I found it acceptable... Not like the other shows have any better spy stuff...

House of Lies, season 3 started and the series is only getting better. Very interesting interaction between Marty and Jeannie, especially in the last episode. Capitalism was never funnier.

So yeah, the Spanish version of Frozen is awesome. Better than the English one, I think.

Anyone watch the new HBO series, True Detective? It's only 3 episodes into the series so far, but I have to admit that I'm finding it to be a potential replacement for the void in my soul that was left after Breaking Bad ended. There's great writing, a long story arc, and the lead characters (played by Woody Harrelson & Matthew McConaughey) are dark and fascinating. Definitely not your typical network weekly procedural.

 

Although I know that somebody will shoot me with a nail gun for this recommendation, I'm still going ahead with it: Elementary. Like you, I was at first apprehensive. Surely nothing can top Sherlock circa Reichenbach Falls? Turning Watson into a woman? Casting Lucy Liu? Setting it in the US? Preposterous.

Then I started watching it. And ironically, some of the very things which made me turn away from it originally entranced me. Lucy Liu as Watson? Incredible choice, a bold move forward for feminism and positive portrayals of Asians. The police procedural setting in the US? Oddly enough, it starts to shine when the cases get linked to

Irene Adler and Sherlock's past back in London, keeping in mind that Irene Adler in the original stories is meant to be from New Jersey.

This article from the AV Club delineates many of the salient points as to why I enjoy Elementary. And yes, I do think that it's actually better than Sherlock, when comparing the two shows where they currently stand.

While the titular character, Sherlock, is indeed better portrayed in the BBC version, Elementary has a more detailed look into Watson that is more than just "hey, I'm Sherlock sidekick" and a more nuanced portrayal of the side characters not called Molly Hooper.

Also, I forgot to add, Natalie Dormer is Irene Adler. Yes, that Natalie Dormer. As if that's not enough of a reason to watch Elementary.

 

I'll agree that Elementary is overall the better show than Sherlock. Sherlock has better high points, but it's still stuck in the pattern of every season having one shit episode, one pretty good episode, and one fantastic episode.

Also, since I don't think anyone has mentioned it, I'd like to recommend Peep Show. I've heard some people don't rate the later seasons as much as the show's early years, but in my opinion it's still the funniest show on TV by a fairly wide margin. The only thing that compares is Black Books, which I think has been mentioned a couple times.

 

I agree with everything you've said except I feel that Elemtary is more of a brilliant TV show while Sherlock seems to be more like a brilliant TV movie series. The best description so far that I've been given is the following:

Elementary is a great TV show, a really splendid crime drama with dash of England. Something that has meat and grit and really has a backdrop that an audience can enjoy and delve into.

Sherlock is art in video form. It's over the top, insatiable and driven by a need to be pretty and witty. It's useless in any other context other than a spectacle to watch and admire. No real meaning though.

 

I've gotten really into Peep Show lately. It used to be that David Mitchell annoyed me, but I've recently taken a shine to his stand up/panel show appearances and so gave in and had a look at Peep Show and That Mitchell & Webb Look. Good stuff, consistently funny and pretty creative at times.

Black Books, though. Black Books. Absolutely one of the best comedies I've ever watched. The back and forth between Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey never gets old and the plots are just on the right side of surreal so that you can never be sure what's going to happen but can still picture it as possible.

 

I just watched all 8 episodes currently out of this new FX series, You're the Worst. I enjoyed it very much. It's a somewhat dark (or at least bitter) comedy about a dysfuctional relationship between two... I guess emotionally unavailable cynics is how I'd put it. Thought I'd recommend it to you guys. Check it out if it sounds like something you could enjoy.

 

I will probably get killed for suggesting this but I really liked Faking It at teen comedy/drama made by MTV of all things.

After numerous attempts of trying to be popular two best friends decide to come out as lesbians, which launches them to instant celebrity status. Seduced by their newfound fame, Karma and Amy decide to keep up their romantic ruse.

In my opinion it really hits the right mix of humor and seriousness needed for an entertaining series.

 

Seconded. Hilarious at times, crazy at others.

Romantic Comedy coming out called Two Night Stand. Seems funny enough.

 

I loved the first few episodes of "You're the Worst" and like the idea of an atypical relationship but I don´t really like the new episodes.
Instead of a new and interesting story we get the same typical relationship drama that hundred of other movies already delivered and the main character is the same hypocritical and controlling husband/friend I absolutely detest.


The one series that really surprised me this season is Satisfaction. Now this is a (family) drama that tries something new and succeeds doing it.

 

Saw True Detective in one go. Amazeballs.
