One of the best fics I've ever read, and not just in the KND fandom. I was genuinely impressed at how it handled issues implied but not actually discussed in the KND world - such as the irony about how it's the most mature (adult) kids who are in charge of the other kids, and the fact that decommissioning is basically a kind of death sentence.

Blind Stars of Fortune is quite good, if it's the one I'm thinking of. Verging on Library quality.

Going to try out all three of the recent recs, though...

Dude. I feel old now. Kids Next Door was that cartoon show that came out when I was in college. I remember watching it once or twice and thinking it had a great premise but still writing it off as ridiculously stupid kiddie drivel based on what I saw of it. Was it actually good?

It was good - not just for kids, but (like ATLA) had stuff that adults could appreciate.

Then again, I was a kid when I watched it, so...

And now that you mention it, I feel old too!

    This doesn't suck. 3/5?

There's several parts I skimmed, and several things I'm not a fan of, but the writing itself is pretty decent and it's got plot elements I haven't seen before. Good time waster.

I think what irritated me most was Sarutobi's portrayal. Oh, a team of my best ANBU were sent out on a suicide mission several days ago along with Kakashi (who I put off-duty) and no one told me? Must have been Danzo. I'll be passive aggressive about this instead of acting like a leader.

Just recently found a SAO story that I really liked. Right now it still feels far too early into the storyline at approximately 40k words to consider it library worthy, but it is still an enjoyable read.

The title is Onslaught by TheGreatWhiteNortherner

It is basically a re-imagining of Aincrad, the first volume of the series. However, instead of 100 floors with a boss to defeat on each floor, the game is changed to a world spread out on a single expansive floor with a world event that must be defeated every 30 days over the course of 5 years.

The author does a good job of changing up the introductory events and game mechanics from canon while still keeping things familiar and feeling like the original volume 1 of the light novel. He also has done the best job I've seen so far of keeping Kirito in character with the solo player mindset he had at the beginning of the series. Kirito still comes across as overpowered for a solo player, but no more than he was in the original version.

The only minor thing I have to complain about is that occasionally you will run across a word where you can tell spell-check changed something the author didn't intend it to do.

Onslaught was a decent time waster, but I can't really see it being library worthy. The writing was pretty bland and had a fair amount of technical mistakes. The different world was the most interesting part, but even then, I found myself skimming through long sections of exposition.

As a plus, there hasn't been any cheesy Asuna/Kirito romance like most other SAO fanfics I've read.

The problem with SAO is that it's just not a very great story. Parts of the premise are awesome, but it quickly devolves into Gary Stu sillyness. Any believable fanfic would have to start by severely nerfing Kirito, so keeping him 'in character' isn't exactly a pro for me.

I agree. Any truly outstanding SAO fic would be a deconstruction, much like He Who Fights Monsters was for Rosario and its harem plot.

Eh, I guess the story is more geared towards those who actually liked the source material as is. I for one absolutely loved everything about the original SAO, Kirito's character and all. The closer a SAO fanfic sticks to canon, the more I like it, which this fanfic does very well without being a rehash. What I do kinda miss in this story is that Kirito is not hated as a Beater.

Read this recently. I actually really liked it. Definitely not library quality or anything like that, but so far nothing has annoyed me in it. Don't get me wrong, I know gabriel_blessing will probably let me down again. But so far it reminds me of the early half of In Flight, where I still found myself hooked. I think one of the big parts is the harem hasn't started yet, and GB's tendency for massive monologues actually works for Harry's internal narrative style.

Kinda like the FoZ/Highschool DxD xover "Through the World's Door" that was linked earlier in this thread, but better IMO.

I'm reading a current Guilty Pleasure level (to me at least) fic called Small changes.

Summary: "Really, how much can small things affect the world? Little things like the colour of someone's hair? Their Mentor? Maybe... their date of birth?"

It's basically a Naruto born into a slightly older age group where he teams up with Itachi, Shisui and Anko. I'm only on Chapter 5 but it's held my interest just enough. Was wondering if anyone else had read it and had anything to say before I keep going so I don't get my hopes up too much.

It's the greatest story ever written. It has changed my life completely, making me realize things about myself and the universe that have deeply rocked the very way I look at the world. Admittedly, it's not sliced bread, but it's the next best thing.

There you go. I hope this will be helpful.

(There's no good answer to your "request".)

It really is entry level fanfic. That fic by Hugplx, Tu-something, is much better and has a similar premise.
