The episode was good. I think the show is trying to make it seem like Jim is a "normal" human that has "normal" capabilities.

Its just... I don't see how the show can build up any tension when we already know what the future will look like.

I don't know, it was passable but not great in my opinion. They really shoved Batman's Rogues Gallery down our throats - Selina, Riddler, Penguin, Falcone and Ivy were all connected to Bruce's murder and shown in the first episode. Selina for some reason now witnessed the Wayne's murder and is seemingly following Bruce around. Pamela Isley is now called Ivy and stands around playing with plants, which was a bit cringe worthy. Those two especially were a bit much. Cobblepot on the other hand was pretty well done.

Some of the dialogue seemed a bit awkward to me as well, and didn't exactly fit the tone they were going for. Honestly I feel like a lot of this show is going to be riding on Gordon's shoulders and he was... okay I guess? The actor seems decent, but everything about him has been a bit bland so far.

Yeah, seemed the same to me.

Heard theyre also going to make a character hint towards being the joker every episode too.

    Alfred was awesome imo.

It was fairly cliched and had some godawful dialogue, but I was generally engaged throughout the episode. I'm tentatively hopeful that this may actually be good.

The main thing that I hated was the cockney Alfred.

It was fantastic! I cried when the Wayne's were murdered. I was so enthralled I couldn't keep my eyes from the TV!

Well, that was mildly accurate in the sense that we know where all of the chars are eventually headed... but I get the sense this show is going to be focused on villain origin stories, not just namedrop cockteasing.

Apparantly because they're putting in a few potential Joker origins with different actors so it's like the 'Multiple Choice Backstory'

That sounds both interesting and difficult. Hope they can pull it off.

Basically, we as readers know how Joker's origin story worked, at least as far as the writers are letting us think. I wouldn't put it past them to say that Joker made it up.

Regardless, Joker's origin, as told by him, differs in every retelling. Sometimes he's a struggling comedian (the kid that Fish Mooney likes), sometimes he's a businessman, and so forth.

Not a fan of the meta jokes with Selina Kyle being a pickpocket, or her witnessing the Wayne's murder. Or her stalking Bruce.

Pamela Lilian Isley = Ivy Pepper is silly, too.

I mean, I'm a bit of a comics purist so maybe I'll have to do what I do with Arrow and watch Gotham as a 'what if?' story.

Pretty good episode. Penguin and Alfred remain the best characters at the moment I think

Penny Arcade sum up my thoughts so far about this one:

I know they're going for mass appeal, but trust that true fans of Batman will figure it out without being spoon fed, and that those with a mere passing knowledge won't really care if they don't ID every future nemesis.

Also, Alfred really should get some counselling for Bruce. Kid's messed up.

Yeah... Said so in a discussion on IRC. Just having the girl be surrounded by a lot of flowers would be hint enough. Likewise, the riddles would be hint enough. The first episode wasn't bad, but it was about as subtle as a cockslap to the face.

Decent episode overall. The Penguin's portrayal is easily the best thing about the series so far. I'm still on the fence about cockney Alfred as opposed to posh butler Alfred, but he's kind of growing on me.

I'm not too bugged by all the references. I figure, they'll blast the audience with it initially, but it should die down soon enough.

It's definitely watchable so far. Ben McKenzie could stand to be a little more charismatic... but yeah. Very watchable.

I finally sat down to watch the first two episodes. Personally I think this is even darker than the Nolan films. Still well pretty good I suppose. With the introduction of the child super villains I wonder if Barbra Gorden will become Batwoman or if will just be another cop show with a take on the Batman world.

You mean Kean? I can't remember if she was apart of the 'Bat Family' way back in the day (What with there being a Batwoman, Batgirl, batdog, etc), but Batgirl!Barbara is James Gordon's daughter, and hasn't been born yet.

I mean, it's not like Selina Kyle and Ivy Pepper (god I hate that name) are their supervillain counterparts yet; they're still children. They've just been introduced.

Well if this is a prequel to the Nolan's Batman, remember Gordan only had a son in those. I've never followed the comics so my knowledge comes only from the Batman live action movies and a couple of cartoons, and nothing is set in stone yet.

Gotta say my favorite part of episode 2 was the scene where Bruce sneaked up on Gordon and Alfred. Just...oh the irony!
