I'd say that if the building was created through magic (or has been magical for a sufficient period of time), it is transported. If not, then it stays in the muggle dimension. A few wizards would die through sudden drops as their buildings vanish, but the vast majority would not. Some muggle buildings would collapse as entire floors disappear into the aether, but population isn't a problem for us non-magical folk.

As for the wizard world, if we take the magical/muggle split to the logical conclusion, all muggle animals and plants stay behind as well, so wizards would face a serious crisis when their entire food supply disappears overnight. Magical creatures would likely be oppressed and some of the more benign magical plants would begin to be cultivated as crops. The wizarding world would likely decentralise further and places like Hogwarts would require either a concerted effort by a large segment of the populace or face starvation.

There would be rebellions from magical races like the goblins, who would likely be able to force some concessions from the wizards in order to secure a viable food source (assuming they don't have their own plants/animals they use for food).

Larger magical creatures would probably starve to death if not kept in reserves as their populations are too spread out to live without muggle creatures to eat. If wizards have any sense they'd start breeding prey animals and then releasing them into the wild, so that the ecosystem is not completely fucked.

Mid-term, if the wizards come together and get things into a semblance of working order, I see a world that is divided into nations that are much smaller than in the muggle world. Separatists would be able to just off to do their own thing because the world is fucking huge and empty. Resources would be important in the short-mid term, but once everything settles down they become about as much of an issue as they are in HP canon.

I'd argue that 'muggle' animals, like plants and mountains are part of Earth's 'infrastructure' and therefore should be cloned just like the rest of the Earth.

I'd argue that if they don't it makes a way more interesting story.

Good point, but are you sure the number of magical animals is enough to feed the wizards?

You can also add normal livestock wizards own. It'd would've been mutated trough ambient magic from the wizards (themselves, their spellwork etc) or being fed with magical plants into being magic enough to come with them. Through magically enhanced breeding, they'd become ancestors of a new race of magical animals solely for food. The same goes for plants, crops and so on from wizard-owned farms, who've been mutated through ambient magic or being fertilized with fertilizer made form magic plants (or magical being shit) to come with them, too.

Hmm, I was half-sceptical, but by now, "The Split" sounds very interesting. Especially when wizards arive at the copy of Earth that has only all of the magical buildings, free to the wildness of the world where muggle cities once stood.

Imagine Diagon Alley suddenly standing in an empty waste. Not a single plant but for the potted plants in the street itself for miles. Because no muggle plant had been transfered.

The Hogwarts is surrounded by empty ground, with not a sliver of grass. Only Whomping Willow stands in the grey and brown landscape with dark stones. Only the Herbology greenhouse still has living plants and greenery.

Even the Forbidden forest doesn't escape the change. Only some parts of it get transferred, with rare parts of the forbidden Forrest still green and lush, with all of it's non-magical creatures gone.

Then, through that empty waste surrounding the magical school, Agrog's family comes hungry, having lost their main food course, towards the dark castle of Hogwarts.

You cannot conjure food. Only water. Not a single seed for any Muggle plant remains. Not a single cattle alive.

The wizards are crafty, and would make do, but it would be an interesting challenge.

Wouldn't the removal of all plants do irreparable damage to the climate?

Irreparable is relative when you have magic.
edit: you can't conjure seeds but you might be able to transfigure magical seeds into non magical seeds.

If Hagrid was able to create giant pumpkins, imagine what folks like Dumbledore or Voldemort would do.

Which brings me to another point.

Imagine this happens in September 1991, when Harry just started at Hogwarts. Quirrel already has Voldemort on the back of his head.

I'm interested in reactions to the Split, especially from:

    - Dumbledore.
    - Voldemort.
    - Malfoys and other rich Death Eaters.
    - Hermione and other Muggleborns.

Basically, the entire reason for the existence of Blood Purity and Death Eaters has just been erased. They hate muggles, the muggles do not exist.

They can still hate muggleborns for another generation, and then they can focus all their hatred on squibs. Unless, that is, squibs disappear whenever they are born. If so, blood purists will still find some group to hate. blood purity was never really about blood purity anyway, it was about being arbitrarily better then others. Maybe they will hate halfbreeds, or non wizard beings, or french people. Oh wait, they already hate all those groups. Guess the blood purists will carry on business as usual then.

For some reason or the other, somebody tries to open a dimensional rift to try and persecute some muggles. Or perhaps the shift in the universe caused some tears in the space-time continuum.

Enter a technologically advanced race of humans/aliens who're rather anal about their own beliefs (à la the Halo series).

Warfare between magic and very advanced human race begins. Must feature a rifle that blows everything into subatomic particles.

No specific dates, just events in chronological order, caused by a single POD.

POD - Arthur Weasley does not win the lottery at the Ministry of Magic.

    * The Weasleys do not go to Egypt during the summer after Ron's second year.

    * They do not have a picture in the Daily Prophet.

    * Sirius Black remains in Azkaban.

    * Harry is invited to stay over in the Burrow in the summer and because of this avoids aunt Marge.

    * Harry's Hogsmeade permission is signed by Vernon.

    * No Dementors at Hogwarts. Harry does not learn the Patronus charm.

    * No Lupin at Hogwarts. Someone else gets the position. Let's say Auror John Dawlish.

    * Pettigrew is not discovered, does not escape and does not find Voldemort.

    * Bertha Jorkins survives her trip to Albania and returns to Britain having managed not to encounter Voldemort.

    * Voldemort remains in Albania.

    * Something happens at the end of the year to make Dawlish leave the position. Let's say he accidentally walks into the Whomping Willow, gets beaten and resigns.

    * During the Quidditch World Cup, Barty Crouch Jr. breaks free of his father's Imperius and escapes.

    * Barty then steals Harry's wand during the riot started by the Death Eaters at the World Cup and casts the Dark Mark.

    * Crouch Sr. frees Winky and finds his son, stunned. He reapplies the Imperius and takes Barty home.

    * Real Alastor Moody becomes the Defense teacher.

    * The Triwizard Tournament is not interrupted and there is no fourth champion.

    * Cedric wins the Tournament. Lives to tell the tale.

    * The Twins don't get money for their joke shop.

    * Hagrid doesn't go to speak with the Giants and does not meet his half-brother Grawp.

    * Percy remains on good terms with his family.

    * Umbridge thankfully is not made the Defense teacher. Instead, Dedalus Diggle agrees to take the post for a single year.

    * Broderick Bode is not put under the Imperius by Lucius Malfoy and does not land in St. Mungos.

    * There is no breakout and Bellatrix Lestrange along with other Death Eaters remains in Azkaban.

    * The Twins remain at Hogwarts for the rest of their education.

    * Draco is not made a Death Eater.

    * Unfortunately, Fudge continues to remain the Minister for Magic.

    * Snape is not forced into any Unbreakable Vows and is not made the Defense teacher.

    * Slughorn continues to enjoy retirement.

    * Dumbledore is not cursed by the Ring Horcrux and does not die.

    * Voldemort has still not returned by this point, does not take over the Ministry.

    Anything I might have forgotten?

Yeah. Thank God Arthur Weasley won that lottery. Even though that caused the second war. A peaceful magical world would get pretty boring pretty soon. Look at Vitam Paramus. *shudder*

While not perfect, the Lazarus form recovery add-on can be of some help, there.

Instead of being born in 1980, Harry Potter is born in the year 2000.

However, Hermione, Ron and other characters have their birth dates unchanged, only Harry's is changed. In 2001, Lord Voldemort attacks Harry and is defeated as he was in 1981 in canon. This of course means that the First War lasted much longer than originally, additional twenty years to be exact.

This set up gives us an interesting AU to work with, especially since it creates questions that need answering:

    - Why did Lily and James wait so long to have a child?

    - Where did Harry live? Was he raised by the now-adult Dudley?

    - How did Britain change during additional 20 years of war?

    - How was Hogwarts for Hermione, Ron, Draco and other kids that attended Hogwarts with Harry in canon?

    - What happened to Sirius, Remus and Peter? Was Pettigrew ever found out to be a spy?

    - What happened to Snape? With no Prophecy to change his fate did he remain loyal to Voldemort?

    - What about the Longbottoms? This time the Prophecy did not affect them, so no tortures, right?

    - Who did the child characters from canon grew up to be? Did Ron become an Auror? Is Hermione in the Ministry?

    - Was Hagrid ever allowed to become a teacher? Is he still teaching?

    - Did Flamel destroy the Stone eventually, fearing that Voldemort might come for it?

    - Dumbledore? Quirrell? Lockhart? The Lovegoods? Umbridge? What happened to them and many other characters?!

    And so many more questions!

I would think that Voldemort would have won after 20 more years. I got the impression he was winning already in Canon just before the attack on Godric’s Hollow. The only real obstacle to him would have been Dumbledore.

Well, yes, Dumbledore is implied to be around. I like to think that Voldemort only took over the ministry in canon because Albus was not around.
