“Naruto-sensei, why do we have to do this?” Sakura asked as she perched on the counter, clasping her hands in front of her.

Sasuke remained silent, his hand fastened around the handle of the oven. His eyebrow quirked upward in an expression of mixed curiosity and resignation. Unlike Sakura he had come to accept his sensei's weird habits, though he by no means understood the reasons for doing them.

“Because it's awesome!” said the elder jounin said. He grinned at his genin for a moment then turned back to fiddling with the trombone. It had taken a long time to learn to play this strange, foreign instrument and he was damned if he was going to let all that effort be wasted.

Settling the trombone into place he spared one last glance over the room, taking in his cute genin, the heavily sterilised kitchen and the camcorder he'd set on the table. All good.

“Alright, places people! Get your game face on!” With one hand Naruto reached into a hidden pocket, drawing out a pair of sunglasses. He flipped them open in an exaggerated motion and placed them squarely on his face.

The genin sighed, taking out their own sets of matching sunglasses and donning them with much less aplomb.

“Okay, on three!” He reached over to press a button on the camcorder and a red light appeared.

Sasuke regained his grip on the handle, preparing himself. He had no idea how this related to being a ninja, but he wouldn't be an Uchiha if he didn't give it his all.

“One, two, three!”

Naruto blew through the mouthpiece, extending the slide and retracting it in rhythm. A couple of bars later, Sasuke opened the oven and slammed it closed, adding to the rhythm of the music.

Naruto glanced over and saw the boy banging his head to the beat. He resisted the urge to grin. That would upset the music, but he couldn't help the surge of pride in his genin. The Rookie of the Year simply had to be the best.

Finishing the brief instrumental, Sasuke raised his head to the sky, striking a pose that reminded Naruto of Gai in a lot of ways. He didn't resist the grin that settled across his face this time.

“Good work Sasuke! Great effort there!”

'Of course it was a great effort,' the boy thought with a small measure of satisfaction. 'I was fabulous.'

He did not voice the thought, only giving a monosyllabic, “Hn.”

Sakura sighed again. “Naruto-sensei, can we go back to our mission now?”

“Huh? Oh yeah, that thing. Sure, we can go back to painting fences now, I guess. Don't see why you'd want to, though.” He let out a loud laugh. “That was awesome!”
