I hate that trope in anime where girls just beat up the boys (usually the protagonist) because they feel like it.

Typical situations this occurs: some fanservice moment when he walks in on her changing by accident, she'll beat the shit out of him. Or she thinks he's looking at another girl and despite them not being a couple she'll beat the shit out of him.

I think it's some sort of strange Japanese take on being 'strong', glorification of a trait many want in their ideal girl, but it's usually always taken too far. It's really not okay for someone to be abusive like that, and it's always portrayed either positively or for humour, and the guys never tell them to cut it out.

Not really. You see it even with meek girls with personalities like Hinata.

A girl who faints whenever she sees her crush. Yep, she's that meek

She only did that twice. Once when he was suddenly right in her face and the other time when it's been 2+ years since she saw him.

And she sure as hell hasn't beaten up Naruto.

Just the once since the first time was anime-only, IIRC.

More on topic, I'm not a fan of mediocrity. I want my protagonists to be prodigies rather than average or untalented. But if they at least aren't gifted then I want them to be hard working or creative enough to reach the pinnacle regardless; protagonists who are compelled to become the very best (like no-one ever was) are more appealing to me.

Wangtsers, self absorved whiners. You can be selfish to a certain point, but don't put a main character that think everyone's action are solely about him, to screw him, to make his life miserable.

    Inactive protagonists, already been said.

Characters who refuse to change and adequate to the situation, othing more annoying them seeing a character go thorugh extreme situations from all kinds, and still be the same one.

Characters whose moral system is identical to the author's, and because of that it's never wrong and all chalenges to it are superficial.

This is usually only in more militaristic stories, but It's annoying how nearly every protag has some kind of burning obsession with with rape. Without fail if the protag is leading a band of men he'll institute a strict no rape policy. It just seems like the author projecting modern values where they shouldn't be. Not saying he should like it but someone who grew up 1000 years ago probably wouldn't give a shit about it.

Protagonist learning he is not just an orphan, but a heir of powerful family/clan (Heir of Founders or Merlin in HP stories) and immediately starting to act like a spoiled aristocrat who thinks he can get away with everything short of murder.

But does it never work because it was bound to fail or because the author doesn't want it to?

Eh, I can buy when it's about not letting soldiers indulge themselves, something like pillaging, raping and drinking isn't present on a well-oiled disciplined military machine. The Romans and the Mongols proved that only a disciplined army can conquer their enemies. But both examples are also good to show that using those terrors tatics on purpose in a controled enviroment is effective too, but when you indulge it (Bouddicca, Alaric and Baghdad) you will be biten later.

I remember that when my troops attacked Merv, 8000 Mongols spent 1 week killing 1.2 million citizens. The Horde had enough discipline to flatten China and Khwarezam, but not enough to not rape a man's wife in front of him. Call it a terror tactic or whatever, nothing changes the fact that the Mongols raped, pillaged and looted as they pleased.
