You. In general, if someone came onto IRC and was like "By the way folks I'm female" then they're essentially saying "Hey, the most noteworthy thing about me is my twat." The important thing should be personality, not gender, and mentioning it unprompted implies a lack of personality.

That's pretty much the biggest red flag for attention whoring on the entire internet, yes.

 

Pretty much this. Your gender doesn't have much relevance to DLP, the Call of Duty match we're in, etc. If you're bringing it up, I'm going to point out why.

 

At the risk of completely derailing a thread about amusing pictures, I'll just answer once.

Sure girls who mention they are girls online often get a crazy amount of attention when compared to real life, and some of them solicit that, low hanging fruit and all that. But they better be in a place where any attention is good attention, because any positive affirmation they get is going to be massively outnumbered by the amount of outright harassment they're gonna receive. The fact that casually mentioning your gender (like the girl does in the comic) can be considered attention-whoring says a lot more about the guys online than it does about the girls.

Considering the online population is about half and half, you should be allowed to 'out' as a girl online or on xbox or whatever, without it being commented on all the time. You shouldn't have to essentially pretend to be a dude online or else a. get harassed and b. get told you obviously want that harassment.


TL: DR You're right gender has no relevance in most online discussions, but 90% of the time we arn't the one making a massive deal of it.
