Agreed. I didn't like the end either. But it was good before that bit.

Harry Potter and the Years of Rebellion. It's post-OttP. However, it's a) abandoned [author got a a brain tumor, hopefully not because of the fic], b) a bit dated and c) wordy as all hell - I think FP did like 100k words just for the summer after 5th year.

Still, I remember it very fondly. I think that, had FP not gotten sick, he would have gone for a two million word epic. Shame.

What about "Harry Potter and the Last Horcrux" by the same author?

FP still posts occasionally on Beyond the Veil (what became of the FFA forum after it was closed down). His last post/visit was September of this year.

As for his health, he was diagnosed with von Hippel-Lindau disease, an affliction he's had since before he began writing fanfiction. Most who develop VHL don't live past 40; he's a few years older than I (46 or 47).

I remember that one very fondly as well, which is to say that I don't remember anything about it except that it was good at the time. I think I've read it a couple of times even.

On rereading it, I'd have to say it's aged rather well. Despite suffering from a case of unnecessarily overblown drama through most of the narrative, it has a lot of interesting ideas and executes them pretty well. The subversion of Ron bashing is clever and interesting (though clumsily handled at times), the Black inheritance isn't a complete cringefest, and the OC and her accompanying sideline romance is pretty interesting and well-developed. Harry's developing powers are clearly OP, but handled in a bit less hamfisted of a way than usual.

That said, it is an old story, and for every cliche that is done well (or maybe even invented -- this came out way back in 2003) there seems to be another section that is shit by today's standards.

All in all, I think it's a perfect Almost Recommendable story.

Eh, nah. YoR practically invented every trope, and it did them well enough that it feels like it's subverting all of them (not just Ron - Dumbledore, Gringotts, Inheritance, OC, DoM, etc). Despite the melodrama, it still stands head and shoulders pretty much every other Indy!Harry story out there.

I love coming across stuff like this! I only started reading fanfiction in 2013, so reading stuff like this, or Paradigm of Uncertainty, or Psychic Serpent - it's like, I don't know, only knowing Star Trek through watching Deep Space Nine (good in its own right)and then realizing that TNG (classic) existed.

I started reading this tonight. Really interesting stuff. The writing is very solid, the dialogue is crisp, and there are some great jokes, but every so often there are these really jarring moments, like the author accidentally erased a couple sentences of bridging expository description. I haven't been shocked out of the story yet, but there have been a couple times I've had to go back and verify that, yes, that just happened, and I didn't miss something.

God. Psychic Serpent. I still remember reading the first few pages of that thinking it was an actual HP novel way back in the day. Then I was like this can't be... Boy was I a retard.

Anyone ever read this Imprisoned Realm. Summary seems decently interesting but the myriad of warnings seems like some tumblr level trigger shit. It was published in 2005 as well so might be full of cliches.

Okay, that was funny. The cupboard one, not the vampire one.
