You came up with all of that just because I mentioned Hermione's father should be named Rupert?

    Well done, good ser.

What does any of that have to do with Harry Potter?

I think he meant to put this in other fandoms.

Yeah, it's finals week and I haven't been here long. I'll probably just delete and repost it in the other fandoms thread unless a mod moves it. Apologies for the confusion.

Remember how, after Baby-Harry defeated Voldemort, the Minister allowed everyone to violate the Statute in order to "party"?

Well, what if someone does something especially stupid that outright reveals the existence of Magic to the world? Because said act was really obvious, had lots of eyewitnesses, was in a public location (say, Buckingham Palace), and was even caught on video, it's impossible to Obliviate everyone of the existence of Magic.

Keep in mind this would happen in November 1981: Harry's already with the Dursleys, Bellatrix and co. presumably didn't attack the Longbottoms yet but are still at large, and the Muggle World has to contend with the Cold War and the likes of Thatcher and Reagan in charge of their respective countries.

Of course not. And Chernobyl wasn't an escaped Nundu at all, it was a 'nuclear accident'.

I think there's a difference between a relatively unpopulated area in Mother Russia and the middle of London in broad daylight when Obliviators are presumably either slacking off or already working their asses off harder than usual.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

We are talking about people who have the power to curse/enchant CONCEPTS, like secrets, job positions etc.

Using simple Obliviation in day-to-day Statute Enforcing is just being polite to muggles.

After all, if they broke out the maximum extent of spells like the Fidelius, then it'd be over.

North of Kiev right next to the border with Belarus is not Mother Russia, and most Ukrainians would kick the ever loving shit out of you for saying things like that.

Also, Pripyat had something around 50k people living in it.

Of course not, that was an Ukrainian Durmstrang student on a home visit indulging in a bottle of horilka and monkeying around with Fiendfyre!

Of cours not, it was a muggle acident, but it proved both a boon in magical research on the effect of radiation on magic and a hedache in form of radiation caused mutations of magical plants and species.

Yeah, I was half-kidding when I said that. I know damn well Ukraine and Belarus aren't Mother Russia, no matter what Putin tells himself at night. I was just referring to how the area was part of the Soviet Union at the time.

I agree they generally are good at enforcing the Statute, and aren't above casual Obliviates.

But consider this: Vernon Dursley managed to notice God knows how many people dressed in robes celebrating. He could clearly hear snippets of their conversations. One wizard even outright told him things like 'muggles' and 'he-who-must-not-be-named'.

And that was one person. One. And while he isn't exactly a screaming priority for Obliviators (namely since most of what he heard was relatively harmless and he knew about Magic anyway), it probably is a sign of what other muggles encountered that day. Hell, the news reported unknown lights and owls acting strange.

In and of itself, none of these things necessarily break the Statute. But they are things the Obliviators should have dealt with. The Minister, to be blunt, was an idiot for risking a potential breach of the Statute just to "party."

Also, you do understand the whole point to this is to discuss the Statute being broken, right? The exact circumstances can change, but I do want to talk about the main concept. And if you don't like my idea of how it happens, I am curious how you think the Statute could be broken.

This reminds me how much I want to see a STALKER/HP crossover.

Also, Chernobyl was in a country whose media was in the firm iron grasp of the Soviets. It would be much more difficult to control exposure in a western country.

Word about Chernobyl only got out, cause the Swedes didn't liked, what their Geiger counters were showing them, picked up a phone, dialled Kremlin and asked "WTF???".

This is the result of watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe while reading Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The big attraction behind this idea was making a squib relevant in the wizarding world without being too ridiculous about it.

    The Gentleman’s Game:

Harry Potter is the Boy-Who-Lived’s older twin brother and a squib. At 11 he goes to St. John’s Academy, an exclusive boarding school in Sussex. His History teacher is very curious about his family. Her name is Peggy Carter.

The narrative would start when Harry’s 16, fully aware of who Carter is and willingly passing information about his family to SHIELD and MI-13. The events of the books have mostly played out as per canon – the main exceptions being that James and Lily are alive and Third Year played out differently. The war’s in full swing, wizards and muggles are dying and Harry’s desperate to do his part to help his family (who see him as helpless at best and a liability at worst).

The story would follow Harry doing spy stuff – information gathering, manipulation and occasionally murder. All the while trying to keep his parents from discovering what he’s doing and finding himself drawn further under SHIELD’s control. He’d mostly be on the periphery of the war, working to destabilise Voldemort’s alliances with various magical creatures and/or killing said magical creatures. Throughout it all he’s mentored by Carter, a retired SHIELD agent and legend in the intelligence community, with occasional assistance from Phil Coulson, another one of her protégés.

Post-war Harry’s family have no idea what he did to help them and he’s in no hurry to tell them (they think he spent the war hiding in Canada). He accepts an offer to attend SHIELD Academy (a US university to his family) and from there I had some vague idea about throwing him into the movies (mostly so I could pair him with Natasha because who doesn’t want that?).

While I would say it in a slightly more sophisticated manner, yes, the only reason it got out to the West was a downwind Swedish nuclear power plant having their sensor go nuts causing them to think they had a leak.
