Can the refilling charm be used on potions?

Like, on a vial of Felix Felicis, or Veritaserum, for an unlimited supply?

No, I assume the charm would interfere with the magic of the potion

I direct you here. You've posted a number of threads lately, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they could have pretty much all fit in in the "Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread" thread.

They could, in fact, not, because they were questions on which there is no Canon answer, and the intent is to discuss them. These threads were exactly the intended outcome of putting up the new rules for the questions thread.

    Carry on.

I wouldn't risk it, even if I saw someone else do it. It just seems like one of those "Neville Longbottom" things to try and do.

I'm inclined to think that pre-HBP Neville wouldn't have the stones to attempt that... hell, maybe not even until mid-Deathly Hallows.

As for the Charm, Word of God seems clear:

So probably not - unless the Refilling Charm does or can work similarly to a Summoning Charm?

So, refilling works on normal booze but not on magical booze?

Johnny Walker Blue Label, endlessly supplied: here Harry comes.

Probably like anything, the better you are at it the better the result, OWL students can do water and maybe juices, NEWT can do alcohol ect, masters could maybe even pull a simple potion or highly textured drink.

Ah apparently I was mistaken. My apologies.

I see. So the magical nature would interfere with the charm. Thanks for the answers, and I'm sorry if my question threads were bothersome.

Wand and potion magic does not necessarily conflict -- we see Snape vanish potions, for example.

But I think the most obvious route to an answer is to consider the consequences if this spell was one which worked on potions. The mere fact that potions are treated as a scarce resource heavily implies that you can't easily duplicate them.

Yeah, vanishing a potion into nonexistence seems easier than trying to refill a nearly empty potion vial, while ensuring that the refilled potion has the exact same qualities and strength without any unexpected side-effects etc.

Hm. What does the refilling charm have to say on the exception to Gamp's Law, beyond "it's a charm and no transfiguration"?

Technically, a potion is a drink. If the refilling charm adhered to the rule, it could only refill a vessel with something from somewhere -- say, from a bottle into a glass. In that case, it could work on potions -- refilling a vial from the cauldron, for example.

Edit: And I would prefer this description, I think. It makes it a charm, and not a quasi-conjuration. Though granted, the Aguamenti-'charm' is a precedence.

But what about in HBP when Harry refilled the nearly empty bottles of alcohol from nothing?

    That's why I asked :p

    Here's the quote:
Looks indeed more like the Aguamenti-version of a charm. Bleh. Well, that's that theory.

I think it's a matter of the actual brewing process, and that adding a wrong ingredient could mess it up, or an external stimulant could cause it to explode. So, I guess I really just see it as using a spell on a potion would probably ruin it.. Even if it's a small chance of the potion being ruined, that's still a huge risk.

Remember, one of the things you explicitly can do under Gamp is "increase the quantity if you’ve already got some". I'd wager this is how the refilling charm works. It takes the little liquid left and multiplies it.

Oh yes, I forgot about that. Okay, so the refilling charm multiplies a little amount back to full. But we still factor in the magical nature of potions, where the charm could affect them negatively, right?

Perhaps it's similar to the Doubling Charm/Gemino Curse? When Harry grabbed Hufflepuff's Cup in the Lestrange Vault, it replicated like any other piece of treasure, but we can safely assume the Horcrux wasn't copied in the process. I mean, unless it's a 'destroying the master copy destroys the clones' kind of thing.

FWIW, Wonderbook: Book of Spells states that duplicate objects tend to deteriorate over a quicker period of time than originals, so if the Refilling Charm worked similarly, perhaps that would be the outcome of a potion's magical properties?

An alternative, based on ihateseatbelts' idea, is that the liquid would indeed be refilled, but the magic wouldn't be, so in effect you'd be diluting the potion.
