Voldemort didn't have everything handed to him. He also knew about his magic at a young age. Harry didn't, and had stuff given to him for 1-4. At 5 he is given shit but it's too late, he tries to push himself but dreams interfere.

Also, Tom was loved at his orphanage, people were just scared, but the owners were nice to him. The reason he hated was because they were muggle, he thought he was pureblood.

 

Tom didn't know about magic till Dumbledore came. He was hated by the children becausse he was an evil child and hurt them.

 

I can see this as being what JKR uses as the power he knows not: bravery.

Harry is in Gryf, known for its courage. Tom was in Slyth, known for its ambition. Harry lacks ambition. Tom lacks ...?

 

...with magic. He knew he could do things the others didn't. He stole shit, talked to snakes, and knew he had different powers. He just didn't know what it was called.

 

Yeah I get what you mean but it wasn't a blood purity thing. He didn't know shit about that when he was 9.

 

I think Tom knew he was different and might have beleived it was magic. Tom was most likely very advanced in parsel magic(if there is a branch of magic for that) by the time he got to hogwarts. He was strong and wanted to punish people.

 

At the orphanage before Hogwarts, he just thought he was better because of his powers. After Hogwarts, the reason he hates going back is because there muggles.

 

We don't really know any of Tom's classmates, Myrtle and Hagrid, both of whom never had a chance to fully train their magical abilities.

Other than Hermione, nobody in the school seems to have any particular talent when it comes to magic. Harry taught the DA how to create Patroni, but only a few were able to (Hermione, Ron, Cho, and Seamus, according to Wiki) and I doubt any of theirs could've matched the power of PoA!Harry's charm that drove off all those (Is 100 canon or fanon?) dementors. Even the OWL testers were impressed by it, while most of the MoM were astonished by it. Harry seems to be talented, just not driven to excel, unless there's something requiring it.

Most of CoS and OoTP were Harry being feared. By the Ministry of Magic and the general population alike. Voldemort is obviously more feared, but Harry was a close second especially in OoTP with all the talk of him going dark.

 

But, the fear of Tom was justified because he really was the Heir of Slytherin. Harry was feared, but he was still wimp!Harry.

 

They didn't know that. He was still feared, there was just no reason for it.

In school Tom wasn't feared though, it said that his classmates looked up to him. I'd have to say Harry was more feared during Hogwarts than Tom was.
