I've never encountered this. I know of no one personally who prefers the movies to the books, nor do I know of anyone personally who saw the movies without reading the books first. I also don't know of anyone who saw the movies, read the books, and preferred anything about the movies.

Granted this isn't the sort of topic I generally have conversations with people about. But this is the first time I've heard of the movies holding any amount of sway at all. My impression was that they were a cash cow in a few senses of the word. They (1) make money in their own right, (2) keep up interest in the books prompting resales, (3) keep HP interest high in general b/c if the hype is lost then things like the Theme Park will be harder to sell, and (4) bunch of other reasons.

But I never thought they held sway when compared to the books. But maybe that's my personal experience being different from the reality of it.

I wonder if it would create a better perception of Ron. The movies kind of butchered his character, and without Rupert Grint he might be looked at in a better light, with less Bashing and more Robin to Harry's Batman.

I met several people who said the movies were better or haven't read the books, only saw the movies.

Incidentally I almost slapped my sister when she said that the books were shitty and the Twillight movies were much better. then I realized she is stupid.

Oddly fiting, lol. I discovered HP through the movies, which led me to the books, which led me to deeply loving fantasy and even more books. So I'm biased, although I think the books are by far better. I loved Alan Rickman and the Trio. The others were at least prett good. But the 4th was so frustrating.

Without a doubt a smaller comunity, but would that be better? Don't know. Even fics like Loving Aunt have their role.

    Average at worst bro.

Also, it would be more easily believed that Younger Harry is a badass. Just watching that actor for the first two movies makes it hard to believe he is gonna kick butt and take names.

Oh and we might continue to imagine adult wizards and witches and teens in robes and stuff, instead of normalish clothes.

Was there ever a reason given beyond the Director getting lazy/Rowling not caring?

EDIT:Oh yeah, we wouldn't have the ridiculous long haired Weasley's, and could actually continue imagining the Twins as a bit beefy.
You think that. But you are wrong. For Draco at least. Rich Pretty Boys have it easy everywhere.

A shame, really. I think that Rupert was the best of three, to be honest, but the script didn't help matters.

This times a million. Harry was awkward, for sure, but he had dry wit and a mean streak that got diluted something weak in the films.

I think the costume choices were a compromise. It's a film about a British school after all, so kids are going to be more receptive to school uniforms that they recognise. Maybe everything else followed on from that?

People would think of weird robes, not British School uniforms when they think of Hogwarts students.

Less fans for Snape and Draco and the Malfoys as a whole.

Hermione would still be hot - the Yule Ball is enough for that,

I don't quite get that. She looks good once in the entire series, and it requires her to prepare for hours. How does that indicate that she's hot?

Because she's doing on that one occasion what other girls do every day. I.e. the Yule Ball shows her on even footing with other girls, compared to the normal situation where she puts in less effort. And when she's on that even footing, she's said to be pretty.

This is why I don't like the movies. Fuckin' school uniform.
I like those robes from Pottermore. I watched the movies only for visual effects of magic. Almost no character looked like i imagined.

Fewer people would be writing Harry as a short guy.

For most of the series, yeah. But in DH he was described as being the exact same height as James, who while never described as tall (to my knowledge), was never said to be that short either. That being said, I can't imagine him being well over six foot under any circumstances, no matter how he was raised.

If the films didn't exist, I think there would be less people writing him as 6'3 as well, actually. No backlash due to the non-existence of Radcliffe!Harry.

I don't think the films had any effect on him being written as short, maybe the opposite even since Grint and Watson are pretty short too. People write him as short because that's what the character is. James was never described beyond his face/hair as far as I know so comparing their heights doesn't say anything.

My headcanon has the students wearing robes, not uniforms. I can't imagine Death Eaters and their spawn wearing normal clothes.

Probably more Harry/Ginny stories. That Ginny from movies was so ugly that I never really read any fanfiction that was about Ginny until very recently. In fact, considering how was Ginny portrayed in canon, it wouldn't surprise me if there were more Mary Sue!Ginny stories out there.

Also maybe more stories about Moody, not influenced by movie!Moody, with that black thing around his head. He resembled pirate more than anything else.

Btw, I hereby cancel my last statement about not posting anything. I was angry at a time. Sorry Sesc, if you took it personally. I will try to refrain from starting off-topic discussions again.

Speaking of Moody, without the movies there would be less stories in fanon where Barty Crouch Jr. was outed as an imposter so easily. That flickering tongue tic is so fucking dumb. I know that the script writers wanted to foreshadow that Moody wasn't who he said he was, but I really hated that.

Harry would seem like more of a badass.

We would have less angsty-Harry fics.

Then again, we'd have less of all types of fics.

I'm not going to lie, this thread makes me almost wish there were no HP movies.
