I absolutely, categorically refused to believe good Calvin and Hobbes fanfic could exist; the source material is almost too... I don't even know the right word... "sacred" is closest. But this is really, really damn good.

The Apocalypse According to C (with some Help from S and H)"Now adults, Calvin and Susie face the end of the world, which Hobbes somehow foretold."

Same author has a His Dark Materials fic, a novella called Salutation, Valediction (points on the board, up front, for a clever title [Hello, Goodbye]), ~20K words, that's incredible as well. I've read a couple hundred attempts at "Will and Lyra somehow find each other again after the end of Amber Spyglass" and it's never right, because if you're going to invalidate the ending to a great series, you'd better have some massive fucking writing chops.

Link to the first part, "like gold to ayery thinnesse beate".

This was absolutely hilarious. There wasn't a single paragraph that didn't elicit a chuckle. Probably has become my favorite Raildex fic too.

Really disappointing that it is abandoned. It managed to nail all the characters perfectly.

I need some new pokemon in my life. So, any good stories besides the obvious ones floating around? Been looking and I just can't find any. One last thing I need to get off my chest...Why do half the writers in the fandom have a hard-on for Ash disappearing (usually being "betrayed" by his friends) only for him to come back (usually a major tourney draws him in) with a fucking super team under a different alias?

Because like Harry Potter most of the fandom is retarded.

    ---------- Post automerged at 02:28 ---------- Previous post was at 02:25 ----------

Lets see, the author of Poké Wars is rewriting the first story and is retitled 'Poké Wars: The Lapidescence'. I have high hopes for that one. If you want crack and Peggy Sue Ashes of the Past is hilarious.

'From One Side to Another' is decent but I may be overestima...362/1/Sins-of-the-Fathers]Sins of the Fathers' a few weeks ago and I think it has potential to be a good fic.

God Slaying Blade Works updated again, finding it difficult to slog though these chapters. Feels like there's 4000 words in every chapter where one of the women is thinking about how they are not attracted to Shirou. Then there's the gigantic crush he makes Ilya have on shirou, seems like he'd pandering a bit there.

    Pandering? In a F/SN fanfic? I don't believe you.

But yeah, GSBW is a pain to read. I kind of forgot it existed until recently, so I'm rereading it to refresh my brain on what's going on. If nothing else, it's a verbose piece of something. And that's about all I can say about it. If I wasn't a self-hating masochist, I'd probably stop reading it by now.

Well I enjoyed reading it until it got bogged down. Sadly it's only going to get worse as he collects more members for the harem.

It's a real shame. Some bits of GSBW were pretty awesome.

Morded fight was one of my favourite fights I've read in fanfiction. Shirou versus all the other Campione was pretty cool too.

But every chapter just gets worse and worse. Everyone seems to want to imitate In Flight. Not just the good bits (you know the basic concept, the interesting fights, etc), but down to everything that made In Flight suck in the end (shitty attempts at harem relationships and humour, cardboard cut out characters, stupid amounts of verbosity). The harem is even worse since all he cares about is Sakura, so it's just words and words of infatuation from everyone.

The other thing that annoys me a bit is that all of Shirou's good traits that people note about him in the fic - like how "kingly" he is, how good of a leader he is, etc - are nothing like him (or even Archer for that matter).

On the note of FSN crossovers though, Shattered Blade updated two days ago. At the moment my favourite Sekirei crossover by a mile.

Takes In Flight, removes the padding and makes everything In Flight tried to do a lot more interesting. So far has avoided going down the In Flight route of silly pandering, but even at 100k words, it still feels relatively early in the storyline. Wanted to wait a bit longer and see where it went, but otherwise tempted to recommend it for the Library.

The relationship with Akitsu and Karasuba is a whole lot more interesting than all of GB's attempts at relationships put together. I'm just hoping this new development of him winging Haihane isn't the first step to stupid harem-ness.

    Rock Happy by ArwenLune.

Generation Kill/Stargate: Atlantis crossover. Occasionally throws in other fandoms.

I'm not sure whether to put this in for recommendation at the moment. I decided I should reread it first.

    Found another good Naruto fic.
    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9250029/1/Shinobi-Team-7

It's an AU, which is pretty noticeable off the bat, and the main divergence seems to be that instead of marrying Mito out of love, Hashirama was convinced by Tobirama to marry inside his clan.
This resulted in the village being formed differently and the Senju not being all but extinct and keeping the mokuton.
Naruto still has the Kyuubi (though he doesn't know it yet) and he, Sasuke and Sakura are a team under Kakashi.

All in all, the writing is good, but the updates seem to be pretty slow.
    Give it a read.

    It's... good.
The system in place is interesting. There's a couple more divergences that are major, like: They're on Hokage #8, The First founded the village 200 years ago, etc. There's more, but those are the ones I feel are more major than the one originally listed. I like the characters in this, Im interested in seeing where it goes... but 9 chapters in and I'm pretty ambivalent towards the story. It seems like Naruto is just kind of there, with Sasuke and Sakura being leaps and bounds better than him. Which, initially, was more or less true in canon. The first couple of chapters are from his Pov, mostly, and there's this great mystery around his character... that's just fallen to the wayside lately. Put aside and forgotten. Sasuke can do this, and Sakura can do that, etc... but Naruto just sort of coasts along.

At least, that's how I feel about it.

Naruto recently landed the killing blow against Kakuzu. On his own merit, not as a gimme.

So yes. I second the rec, and believe it to be Library quality.

Thirded. I was pleasantly surprised by this being as good as it is. A solid 4/5.

Read the story, it has its positives, but won't be putting it up for review just yet.
The positives for me were the writing, originality and general world building. One of the major drawbacks is how slow the story progresses, granted it picks up after chapter 7 but you have to stick with it till then.
An argument can be made saying it was for the purpose of world-building, but imo it didn't really require as long as it took.

Some of the other things the author delves into might be considered controversial and has me a little tentative for instance,

Jiraiya teaching Sakura the Rasengan and her picking up sealing.

I'm witholding judgement for now and keeping an open mind.
Another fact that bothers me is how the author explains certain deviations

Did you really need to have Hashirama marry within his family to preserve the Mokuton? Does that mean the Senju clan has been inbreeding for 200 years without facing any adverse effects because of it? Might be wrong on the second part though, not sure.

Overall a decent fic, though need a few more chapters before I can give a more comprehensive verdict as it is only now that it has entered its story-arc.

    The Senju:
As far as I can tell, pretty much - plenty of people have no doubt married into the clan, but those with the aptitude for the Mokuton were married between the various families within the clan. It's not really that big of a deal.
    The bit with Sakura:
I'm withholding judgement about too. It does seem odd, but Naruto's skill set has changed a little too with the proto-Kabuto/Tsunade healing and Asuma's ash jutsu, so we'll see.
It was definitely a solid read, though how the next chapter or two go will probably decide whether the pacing is something of an issue.

And as a side note, I really liked the various religious mentions. Pretty minor, but it did a lot in terms of worldbuilding impact.
