... or 'damn, your sub's sick, too? Hey, I got an idea...'

My related peeve: when authors mistake magical enslavement for BDSM.

Those mistakes are the reason I... I mean Hugplxs' friends read those stories.

    Naruto pet-peeves:
    • Naruto being punished for bringing Sasuke back (punishing him for bringing a valuable resource back under the control of the village and foiling an attempted desertion?! That's fucking idiotic!!)
    • Naruto being physically attacked by villagers (stress could let the nuke in chakra form loose at the village and make it an ex-village. I'd say (don't remember, if they exist in canon) the ANBU minders would save him from physical attacks, but couldn't prevent the hate).
    • Civilian Councils (and what's worse, in most fanfics, they have exactly two jobs: Making Naruto's life a living hell and kissing Sasuke's mangy ass): That shit doesn't exist. The Hokage is themilitary dictator of Konoha (there's a Jonin Council, though, but I forgot, what they do, except having some amount of say over who's the next Hokage's gonna be).
    • The Kyuubi being too helpful without a damn good reason

Another pet peeve is fics that include:

Naruto going to the dark side because Sakura smacked him around.
Naruto walks into Hokage tower and talks down to the Hokage and subsequently get whatever he wants because the old man feels guilty.(Usually about a beating courtesy of civilians)
    PS
Is this thread for pet peaves fanfiction in general or HP fanfiction only?

I'd say fanfiction in general, I saw a post about Naruto-related pet peeves somewhere earlier here.

The word Marauders, I previously had no problem with it but I grew to dislike it.

Perhaps due to the fact that they weren't called Marauders and that it is just a fanon-invented name.

Actually that's a good point. It's not called the " Marauders' " map, it's the " Marauder's " map. The map isn't possessed by a group called the Marauders but rather a tool used by a Marauder. Singular.

Definition of marauder: to roam or go around in quest of plunder; make a raid for booty.

I guess you're right, they weren't actually called the Marauders. Unless someone has a citation that proves otherwise from canon writing? Like a passage specifically calling them 'The Marauders'.

I think the only time it was mentioned was when Harry saw the map first.

They called their map the marauder's map though.

See my post above. However the post with the quote about the RoR confirms they are called that.

Well, not necessarily. Ron could have just made the same mistake as the entire fanon, misunderstanding the maps name.

Possible but unless information is given to suggest an alternative then anything said by a main character in fiction should generally be taken as true. It's just a way for the author to directly feed us information and it's not intended to cause confusion.

Greengrocer's apostrophe causes enough problems among people who should know how to use it. If we assume JKR didn't fall foul then it's definitely a map meant for marauders (scoundrels and pranksters etc etc).

Of course James, Sirius, Remus and Peter could be considered to be such paragons of Marauderiness that they appropriated the name. Except that the only kids who'd heard of them did so via the map so obviously they weren't that infamous.

So strike up a new peeve for me: The idea that 'The Marauders' (OK, so I see why people use it now, it's much more convenient than listing names) were some kind of historical event along the lines of the biblical plagues.

For example in fics where Harry decides to either resurrect 'The Marauders' or start 'The New Marauders' and announces it with fireworks and hilarious potions shenanigans during supper. Then there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth for the very bane of Hogwarts has returned! Tales of them are told in hushed whispers and between fearful glances. Children have heard the name from their parents who themselves become white and clammy with fear and trepidation at the very thought.

    No. Just. No.

They were four reasonably gifted students who played the occasional joke on the undeserving and who sometimes bullied Slytherins either because they thought they were eeevil, because they caught them bullying Gryffindors or because they thought their hair was greasy and they had a stupid nose. Those four kids formed a little 'secret' society (I'm fairly sure I was in one at some point as a kid) and might have given themselves a silly nickname.

If they were the "marauders", I assume it would have been called "the marauders' map", not "the marauder's map". The marauders' map implies it is the map of the groupd the marauders'. the marauder's map implies it is a map for marauding. two very different things actually.

I imagine they were about as notorious as the Weasley Twins and the only people who still remember them are the Weasley Twins and the teachers.

'Reasonably gifted' seems harsh. Becoming animagi in secret and creating the map... Seems pretty special to me.

Also, is one a bully if you only bully another bully/twat? Did they have other targets for their 'mean' pranks?

I don't recall if that's the case. I always read them as annoying, obnoxious at worst. Hardly shocking.

Snape? Probably not your strongest witness. Or Lily by proxy.

Although, I could just be forgetting canonical 'undeserving' targets.
