    A Castle and a dance.

“Tale as old as time...song as old as rhyme,” Brittany Maltz sang to herself, trying to ease her nerves.

Her choice of melody was apt: The gala was like something out of an aristocratic fairy tale. A big castle, bright lights, good food, flowing dresses. Air drowning in liquor.

Hundreds of faceless, masked strangers, dancing as one, with laughter as high-pitched as it was insipid.

Brittany frowned, part of her wishing she really was watching Beauty and the Beast at home in her pajamas, instead of here, in a dress that was too tight (though people insisted it was supposed to feel that way and she couldn't get a larger size), heels that were too high (this was not a flat shoe event), and more perfectly-applied make-up than she’d ever worn in her entire life (her protests that it would be pointless to put anything on when she was going to wear a mask were ignored.)

The other part, however, was overwhelmingly ecstatic at the opportunity to have come to an event in the Neither such as this - it was unheard of in her field, and absolutely worth the combined nerves and excitement that were rendering her utterly unable to eat or drink.

Her companion did not have that issue.

“...we've been here for less than ten minutes and that is at least your third glass of wine,” Brittany muttered.

The petite blond grinned into her glass, unashamed. “Not a party ‘til m’sloshed, hon,” Ryce drawled out, mismatched blue eyes rolling behind her glasses. She was not wearing her mask, allowing it to perch on her top hat - it made the stockier woman wished she’d thought of that, as her contacts really irked her.

The half-angel was clad in her formal garments; though while there were some similarities between her outfit and the other attendees', Brittany was finally convinced that Ryce only called them “formal” as an excuse to wear something skintight and low-cut.

“Not a party at all, remember? I really don’t want to hear Scott whine about you getting drunk in dangerous territory, Ryce,” the Neitherpologist sighed.

“I grew up in this territory. Scott will always find new things to whine about. He could turn into a flying pumpkin that shoots lasers out of its ass and this crowd wouldn’t bat an eye. Might as well enjoy ourselves,” despite her words, Alaryce Gallagher was still smiling. Teasing - only teasing. She took a large sip of her wine as if to prove a point. A drunken point, but a point nonetheless.

That relaxed posture took flight when the smooth chuckle rippled out behind them. The wine glass cracked.

“Ms. Maltz, my daughter is right...please, enjoy yourself. T’is a ball after all.”

Ryce turned around with measured slowness and a guarded, blank expression for the tall, masked man behind them. Even if she didn’t recognize Ryce’s tension, Brittany thought that his mask did nothing to hide that familiar grin.

    “Dad.”

Ryce had almost taken a step forward when a steel grip pulled her back. “Ryce,” the blond tore her gaze away from her father to the hand seizing her, and then to Tia Guerrero. The beautiful, statuesque amazon in the cocktail dress and the strappy sandals (life was unfair, Brittany thought) was looking past them, past Azrael. “Look around.”

The Angel of Death was not alone, and their masks were as moot as his.

With a jolt of panic, Ryce realized they were here.

They were moving among the ballroom, obscured along the masked masses. Like jackals, gliding through the cover of leaves and foliage, closing in on the prey.

But she heard the chittering of the legs, and saw the elongated form, towering over most.

She felt the slow chill creeping in, and caught a flash of cold, blue lips, chattering away with some nobody.

She tried not to choke as the slow, sick-sweet scent of grapes and rot violated her senses.

They were here. They were close. Who else had come with them?

Ryce swallowed slowly, taking comfort of the familiar setting, of the knowledge to never back down, never blink. She instead did the worst thing she could have done: Speak.

    “...On Wednesdays, we wear pink.”

Tia looked to her incredulously, an expression Azrael did not share: He laughed merrily instead.

It was the worst thing he could have done, Ryce felt, as the subtle, slight sign of approval towards her suddenly sparked a suffocating, furious, deafening silence from the jackals. Her grip tightened. The sting of glass against her skin barely registered.

The dance continued, now bubbling with the promise of blood.

    CRACK.

Zola’s shillelagh cut through it, striking the ground with enough force to shatter the marble floor into a spiderweb of cracks. She lifted it and walked briskly towards the girls.

Soft, green light still bloomed from the irish heirloom when she came to Ryce's side. Her eyes were hard, Ryce thought, unflinching. She hoped hers were the same.

“I don’t like how they're looking at you,” Zola muttered, scanning the crowd. “Also, I told you pants were a good idea today.”

“No one lets me be pretty,” Ryce grumbled, her eye slowly losing the glow it had been gearing up.

The crackle of the beads next to her showed that Leo had been drawn over himself, and there was something comforting about the huge, quiet man coming over without any of that bloody lip his sister had.

The only one missing was Scott, but Ryce could see the handsome idiot in the expensive suit nearby, flirting up a masked bimbo with breasts the size of his head. She would have smacked him if not because of his eyes, deadly serious, and all too aware of the situation, furiously making a plan.

“I’ve never been a dancer...s-sir,” Brittany finally replied quietly, “Always more of a player.”

“...Oh?” Azrael asked, interest creeping at his voice. Ryce had mentioned he was a music aficionado. Or perhaps he was surprised by Brittany, willingly speaking up. "And what do you play?”

“The cello, sir,” Brittany struggled not to shake as all the attention moved to her and the Angel. Keep talking. Keep talking. “I haven’t in years though - since before college. I’m probably rusty.”

“You’d be surprised,” Azrael spoke with a touch of wistfulness, “you never quite forget. Music is about backbone and daring, and you have much of that right now.”

Brittany laughed. “Oh no, not at all. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't been promised protection.”

“Yes, I can...see,” the Angel said pleasantly, his eyes dancing from each and every one of her friends. Ryce didn't want to think about why that made her uncomfortable. “But I have to warn you, darling: Placing too much faith on their skill might not be best with the company we share in this place.”

“Oh, not, not them - Scott didn’t even know I was coming. They're not protecting me,” Brittany replied, letting out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. “He is.”

Ryce saw the jackals grow still when the Lion walked over.

The man could barely be considered that, being young, having just reached his 20's, and of lanky build and tousled up black hair. His stride was relaxed and would probably be more accurately described as a stroll.

And every step brought a fresh ripple of unease and tension over Death's banner. There was another predator in the midst.

"Now, that was interesting," Met's smile was quiet and content, with a slight tilt of askance towards Brittany, who took one of the drinks he was carrying. "It kinda felt like I came in right on cue to the perfect entrance line. Yes? No?"

“Maybe,” Ryce chuckled, draping her arms over his shoulders in a lazy hug. She watched her siblings, one by one, and clenched her teeth.

    This was...bad.

Before, they had been amused, happy to scare her and make her feel the need to defend herself, tense and fearful. They always saw her efforts as nothing more than entertainment, like a mouse trying to stare down an elephant.

    Now...

Now they felt threatened. The Morning Child’s appearance had shifted things. They were in danger. They could be hurt. Maerwynn herself looked seconds away from…

    ...A fight was inevitable.

“Hm,” Met noted, gently to push her back, “...Well I found the pigs in a blanket. Anybody want to split them?”

Ryce’s eyes met Scott’s. They needed to put some distance between them, especially with Brittany here, she was in no position to…

“Children…” she heard her father’s voice, sweet and soothing and utterly mute to the angered monsters. “Let’s not ruin the party.”

    “Agreed.”

The tension broke, and fog flooded the room.

They were all pulled by it. Tossed by it. Swallowed by it.

    “Let's not.”

    After all. They were invited.

    And then lights came on.

It shone down on them all. They stood in a circle around the Jesters who had handed them their masks on arrival. There were eighteen to be exact. The white masks of the party were gone, and the men and women wearing them replaced by androgynous forms sporting entirely new masks of wire, glass and bead, shaped to be all manner of beasts:

The Raven. The Raccoon. The Parrot. The Hyena. The Ram. The Jaguar. The Silver Fox. The Cat. The Lamb. The Hart. The Turtle. The Snake. The Salamander. The Ox. The Hare. The Boar. The Owl. The Peacock.

“Now...what is a party without a few games?” the dark haired Jester - a man - asked, grinning at them all with ill intent.

The Lamb’s hands shot up to their mask and attempted to rip it off, the beads and wire tearing from the force of it. Several of the Beasts recoiled at the sight of what lay beneath. A few let out genderless howls, sounding more like the animals their masks represented than the men and women once beneath them. Several seemed largely unimpressed. A few seemed interested.

There was nothing beneath the masks but taut flesh.

    Souless...Lifeless...

Taut flesh that split open with a bloody gash. They could hear the shrieking bleats as their hands rose to their face. They fell to the floor and moved no more.

Something slick moved in the shadows, humming, its voice sweet and murmured like a child only half awake.

    “Pawns and queens…
    and Rooks and Kings…
    Unmasked pieces means
    finding one that sings.”

All the figures’ hands fell back heavily to their sides at the honeyed venom voice purring from somewhere. Another hissed behind their mask into the darkness at the shifting and stepped back.

All the while, the Jesters watched. Eventually, the grin that curled across the woman in black with Her two-toned mask was one of pure, feral delight.

“Yes, well...think you’d best be leaving those on, now, eh?” the male Jester asked.

His female counterpart picked up where He left off, “Now then, shall we talk? The masks can only properly be removed by us. Trying to do so yourself will result in....that. Also trying to take ANOTHER’s mask will result in it happening to the person who tried to remove it,” she paused, mouth twisting into a frown, “Unless you’re the Uninvited...party crasher...”

“She actually closed a few loopholes,” He reminded Her, “Blessing in disguise.”

“Fair ‘nuff,” She nodded and turned to Their players. She was grinning that unsettling grin again.

“You all have your allegiances...whether it be to family, friends, or simply yourselves,” He informed them.

“Use your alliances...find your allies...and discard the rest,” She nodded.

“In fact...why not give up one of your numbers to us?” He asked brightly.

“That IS a good idea. I like it. Yes, you have until the clock strikes the hour if you want to give us one of your own. It will make your sorting much easier.”

“Try not to all die this time,” the Man added brightly, raising his hand.

The fog came again, and they were all carried, far...

    "Work together."

    ...and away...

    "But trust no one."

    ...and alone.

    "And. Go.

    RULES

Day Length: 5 days (Day 1: 10 days)
    Night Length: 24 hours

    Decorum
    1. No Out Of Game communication is allowed.
    2. At least some attempt at readable grammar. There is no LoLcat flavor or role in this, so please do not type like one.
    3. Lying about RL commitments is expressly forbidden. Similarly, questioning someone about their RL is forbidden. If you have a RL problem, please also inform the mods in your QT.
    4. Please, try to keep posts civil. We’re not going to make you hold hands and force you to sing kumbaya, but keep personal attacks off the table and focus on the gameplay.
    5. Keep the See You Next Tuesday language out of this game. Please and Thanks.
    6. If we see a post in question, we will PM the player(s) at hand. If you have a problem with a post, bring it up in your QT or PM us.
    7. All mod decisions are final unless otherwise specified.

    Gameplay
    • Days will be 5 days long, with the exception of Day 1, which will be 10 days. Day will be cut short if vote majority is reached.
      Nights will be 24 hours.
There will be Twilight for one hour if Day ends at deadline. If Day is cut short due to lynch, there will be Twilight of a length ranging from whatever time remains in the day to up to a maximum of 8 hours, whichever comes first. Twilight only begins after the flip.
    • Deadlines may be extended at mods’ discretion. But, if you don't get an Action in by the end of a phase, the deadline will not be extended for you.
    • Posting after the Day/Night deadline but before the Lynch/Kill is resolved is not allowed. Violators will receive punishment (or not) at the mods' discretion.
    • Day/Night actions have a set order which is both public and reasonable to the mods.
    • Dead players may post until the mods have flipped them, or there’s an announcement to halt posting. After they’ve flipped, they can no longer post.
    • Posts cannot be edited.
    • You may not quote directly from the mods or QTs unless explicitly told so.
    • Mod questions can be posted in-thread or privately, and will be responded to through the same medium. Please bold and color questions on a separate line.
    • Lying about anything but RL is expressly allowed. Go Nuts. Hell, maybe we’re lying now by telling you this. Dun dun dun.
    • Though we can’t guarantee we’ll always have the time, this game will ideally be Flavor-heavy. However, the Flavor is just that: Flavor, entirely for the sake of entertainment.
There will be short, concise statements afterwards outlining the actions that have taken place, and those are the only relevant info that should be taken away from it.
We cannot stop you from trying to dissect the Flavor for clues to other players identities, but in doing so, you can - and probably will, knowing us - entirely misread the situation and lose the game for your faction. You have been warned.
    • Please cast your vote on a separate line bold and colored, in the regular “VOTE [PLAYER]” format.
Improper format will not be accepted.
Deliberately trying to misuse the vote format (aka vote shenanigans) will not be tolerated.
    • Lynches occur on vote majority, and if one is not reached by the end of the Day, it will result in a No Lynch.
    • The Town win when all threats to town have been eliminated, and at least one town player is alive.
The Scum win when all opponents have been eliminated, or nothing can prevent this.
Any Third-Player faction wins when they meet their respective wincons.
If everyone is dead at the end of any phase, however unlikely, the game is a draw.

    The Most Important
    • This game has Bastard Elements. You have been warned and know it going in. All complaints will be fed into the black hole that resides where TerRaine’s soul should be. Sloth will provide the dip.

    CHARACTERS

    TOWN

    1. Alaryce “Ryce” Gallagher - The Heiress Lie Weaver
Ryce is the half-human daughter of the Angel of Death, Azrael. Her past has left her a touch sociopathic to the plights of all others outside of the friends that her twisted family has trapped in this nightmarish game.
Don’t let her tiny stature or vicious loyalty to her friends fool you, the eyes behind her glasses can be that of a Monster.
    Abilities:
    • Bond Of Family - She shares a mental bond with Leo, allowing her to communicate with him during Night and Day.
    • Birthright - Once per game, she can summon a dead player's shade, controlling them. She then has a One-Shot of their role abilities (available immediately) to use any way she wishes.
There are restrictions to this action.

    2. Adam “Metestasnathean” Matthews - The Morning Child
Or, y’know, just Met. Ryce’s closest...person. A perpetually nonchalant, content creature of quiet smiles, whose existence is denied by most and understood by little, and whose deeds are plagued by myth and frozen terror.
He enjoys croissants with his coffee. Calls them “moon bread.”
    Abilities:
    • Price To Pay - His sins have made it so that Met often goes unnoticed in the Night, and thus is immune from Night actions.

    3. Scott De l’Vida
Scott is the one good, and honorable, man in this group of monsters and survivors - though he is a bit of a whore. As the lone heir to Elizabeth De l’Vida, CEO of Vida Corp., he has it in him to be either a soldier or a politician. By the sharp edge of his knife or mind, Scott will do whatever he has to in order to protect his family and friends.
    Abilities:
    • The Flying Pumpkin That Shoots Laser Beams Out Of Its Ass - Because Ryce said so. He can use his luminescent arse to entertain his friends.
      • “This is why we can’t have nice things,” Met nods.

    4. Tia Guerrero
A powerful Amazon who is as beautiful as she is deadly.
Like all of her kind and legacy, Tia is a natural master at most forms of armed and unarmed combat, as well as warfare strategics. Coupled with strength, speed, endurance and reflexes well beyond that of a normal human’s, she’s a force to be reckoned with.
However, she also carries her kind’s burdens: That of a thirst for violence, social ineptness and psychotic fits of rage she struggles to control.
She was hired to protect Ms. De l’Vida’s son, but she would lay down her life for any of her friends...and she may have to.
    Abilities:
    • More Than Honor - Each Day and Night, Tia must select a player to guard. Any successful Kill Actions used on that player are redirected to her, and she dies in their place. This action is compulsory and failure to act will cause random targeting.
Protected players are informed of her sacrifice.

    5. Leo Muir
A selkie born in the irish sea, and Zola’s fiercely protective older half-brother. The pressure and stress of trying to find a cure for his sister has made him driven, focused and taken a toll on his body: Though only a few years older than his friends, his greying hair and tired eyes often make the difference much starker.
Nonetheless, Leo is a veritable force of nature not to take lightly, both with his physical appearance of almost 7 feet of muscle and fat, and with the magic he wields, channeling the earth’s elements to his will.
    Abilities:
    • Bond Of Family - He shares a mental bond with Ryce, allowing him to communicate with her during Night and Day.
    • Selkie Skin - At night, Leo can use his magic to sense someone targeting him and switch into his Selkie Skin to absorb the action - he can use this action as a one-shot ability as soon as the next Night.
Leo cannot absorb more that one action at once.
He cannot absorb any successful Kill actions.

    6. Zola Muir
A selkie born in strange, foreign waters far away from her clan, Zola is Leo’s younger half sister. Her life has been struck by misfortune - in the terms we are familiar with, she’s been afflicted by a terrible terminal illness, and is slowly withering away. Once a healthy, curvy creature of the sea, she’s becoming weaker with each passing week, her magics all but gone.
However, with her death so imminent, she has come to appreciate life more and all the risks, joys, and even cruelties it has to offer her. She may be dying, but she’s not dead yet and has no intention of acting like it.
    Abilities:
    • Light And Life - Every Night, Zola must select a target and slam her Shillelagh at the ground at their feet. This will disorient the target, and redirect their action in a random direction, hitting a new target. This action is compulsory and failure to act will cause random targeting.
There’s no feedback to being randomized.

    7. Brittany Marceline Maltz
Scott’s oldest friend. A scientist, not a warrior by any means. Britt knows her survival chances are microscopic, but as a not-thin, glasses-wearing, plain nerd whose hair can only claim shampoo as its stylist, she’s perfectly at ease with these situations: That’s where her brain shines the most.
If nothing else, she’ll get the slutty, pretty-boy home to his mommy in one piece.
Damn, her fiance is going to bitch at him for dragging her to danger again...
    Abilities:
    • Neitherpologist - Brittany follows the life science of nonhuman beings, which makes the patterns and behaviors of these creatures all too easy to recognize. Every Night, this allows her to see who a player of her choosing was targeted by, phrased in an “XXX/YYY/ZZZ visited your target” format.

    8. Rachel Grey, Vida Corp Militia
Elizabeth De l’Vida’s highly trained men or women for hire. They do not have any abilities other than their wits to try and help their boss’ son, and his friends, escape.
    Abilities:
    • Good Men Die Easy - You have the power to vote.

    9. James Quint, Vida Corp Militia
Elizabeth De l’Vida’s highly trained men or women for hire. They do not have any abilities other than their wits to try and help their boss’ son, and his friends, escape.
    Abilities:
    • Good Men Die Easy - You have the power to vote.

    10. Jessica Perez, Vida Corp Militia
Elizabeth De l’Vida’s highly trained men or women for hire. They do not have any abilities other than their wits to try and help their boss’ son, and his friends, escape.
    Abilities:
    • Good Men Die Easy - You have the power to vote.

    11. Todd Mitchell, Vida Corp Militia
Elizabeth De l’Vida’s highly trained men or women for hire. They do not have any abilities other than their wits to try and help their boss’ son, and his friends, escape.
    Abilities:
    • Good Men Die Easy - You have the power to vote.

    --

    SCUM
Note: All Scum are outfitted with the Night Kill ability. It is up to them to decide amongst themselves who the target is, and who carries out the kill.
They do not have to give up their Night Action to perform the NK.

    1. D’Xias - The Vineyard Blight
The twisted aberration spawned from Azrael’s encounter with Shub Niggurath. A faceless, hooved mass of flesh in a vaguely humanoid shape. Every so often his mouth will bubble up onto the surface of his skin followed by a multitude of orange, glowing eyes - the eyes of the Goat.
D’Xias despises his sister, Ryce, and the favor she has with their father. He will do anything and everything to see her suffer. He has done everything to see her break.
    Abilities
    • White Oblivion - Once a game, Day or Night, D’xias can erase a player from existence. Use of this ability during the Day violates Creation, and causes Night to fall immediately.
      There is no Twilight.
      There is no flip.
This ability cannot be used until Night 2.
This ability cannot be blocked by any means.

    2. Maerwynn - Lady of Ashen Winter
The only of Azrael’s daughters to join in on this macabre game willingly. The spawn of an ancient, powerful, glacial wyrm, she wields the fierce freeze of the arctic in her hands. She is beautiful, with pale skin, full frosty-blue lips, and hair as black as midnight - like her father’s. However, her flat eyes are that of a lizard’s.
There is no love between her and her youngest sister, but that is not why she’s here. The Morning Child broke her mother...she will bring the cold into his heart.
    Abilities:
    • Glacial Kiss - Once per Day and per Night phase, Maerwynn can select a player and freeze them in place, effectively preventing the use of any abilities they have. Her targets will thaw out when the next phase begins.
Unless the targeted player takes action, there will be no feedback for them.

    3. Cris’tiel - The EverDraught
Cris’tiel is a nightmarish cross between man and centipede. An Earth Elemental whose insatiable thirst finds no lasting relief. The closest he achieves is from drinking the blood of his own and his means to obtain that quenching nectar…It is not spoken of and he is no longer welcome among his Elemental kin.
It’s left him looking ever so thin…
    Abilities:
    • Sounds Of Crawling - Every Night, Cris’tiel may select a target to see who they targeted, phrased in an “Your target visited XXX/YYY/ZZZ” format. A target that took no action will have the feedback “Your target visited nobody.”

    4. Sal’iendre - Old Philosopher
Sal’iendre is the lowly result of Azrael’s coupling with a common kitsune. Despite his aged appearance, he is far younger than his three siblings. It is his stealth and cunning that have allowed him to live as long as he has amongst them. He is best described as a guarded creature with his best interests and survival always at heart.
    Abilities:
    • Scholar’s Step - Any action he performs will not be seen by informative roles of any type. Any investigation of him will reveal him an innocent, performing no action.

    --

    THIRD PARTY

    1. Allocen
    She likes games.
    All kinds of games.
    ...Especially messy ones.
But how can she truly enjoy them if she cannot see her playmates?
There is only one truth for Allocen….Everyone must S̨̮̠̙͍̱͇̞͑̇̂̈͠ͅĪͣ̍̇̆̎͏̷̷̸̗̻̮̗̩̪͖̻͓̰̜̤̥̹̭̥͞ͅNͥͤ ͐ͯ̒ ̷̫̗͙̰͙̲̠̞̬̭̖͎̫̫͙͙̖̼́͂͢͜͞G̵̨̧̼̮̭͚̔̀ͪ͋̀̀.
    Abilities:
    • Scrambled Or Over-Easy? - She can only target those she knows the identity of. For every Day+Night cycle, she must make no less than 1 and no more than 4 guesses as to who is hiding behind the masks. Those who are guessed correctly die instantly.
She cannot guess on a specific player’s more than once per Day/Night phase.
She can not use this action in conjoint with Let Me In. (meaning that they cannot both be used in the same Day/Night phase.)
    • Let Me In - Each Day or Night, she may check on a player to find out what their faction is. The results will be in a “Target is Town,” “Target is Not Town” or “Target yields No Results” format.
She can not use this action in conjoint with Scrambled or Over-Easy? (meaning that they cannot both be used in the same Day/Night phase.)

    2. Azrael - Whom God Helps - The Helper
    The Angel of Death.
He is father to all the Scum team and to Ryce. Older than time itself, he has seen worlds born and seen them wither unto dust. Why he’s chosen to play is not something anyone on either side can comprehend.
It’s probably just best to stay out of his way?
After all, it’s never clear whose side he’s really on, but he seems to sort of love his youngest daughter. That’s the hope, at least.
    Abilities:
    • Absent Father - His goal is to make it to the end of the game.
If only he and Allocen remain, she wins.
      He wins any other stalemate.

You have no idea how happy I am that I rolled town, what with all these superstar players in the mix.

    Eyooo, What's up [REDACTED]s?

Please tell me that reading the flavour is optional because I came into this game with the expectation I wouldn't need to read any more of Sloth's tldrs.

    It's all required reading.

I’m just jotting down stuff randomly from what I gather from flavour: Brittany is a tomboy. Ryce is a slut/babe. Probably has something with ‘scott’, tension with dad, Tia is a hottie, Zola is a badass, Leo is a stoic, LET ME MARRY YOU MET YOU FABULOUS PERSON.
In conclusion: Mets 10/10 in appearing cool, would bang if not for pedophilia, say no to incest cause Dad seems meh, all in all a good start to the party.

See mods, I actually read through all that flavour. Just for you guys. ;)

    Ew.

    Empty buzzwords.

Rubicon, are we both town? Can we do the thing we did last time except with a better success rate?

On that note, spoiler that shit, Sloth.

But Snowvon is town, so you are unsure about your own????
