Hi all,

I'm looking for Harry-centric Neville BWL stories that are well written.

The more AU the better. Novel length or more, please! I'm fine with Harry and Neville being friends, enemies, or plain not knowing each other at all. Please NO slash!

Kwan Li's The Other Boy Who Lived. Good stuff.

Bobsoqqara's Lily Potter and the Worst Holiday is another. (Varying POV, but still centers on Harry.)

 

That second fic you listed, Perspicacity, is downright cringeworthy.

 

For a fic written in 2005, it's not so bad. There's been a ton of fanon drift since then.

 

Well, let's see:

Just Another Orphan is good and has been talked about a few times on this forum.

The Knight is a bit different. Harry is an Auror in training. Grindelwald was defeated by Dumbledore like in canon, but the empire he created didn't fall so half of Europe is some kind of magical super power.

Death Before Dishonour has a non!BWL Harry iirc. For some reason Harry doesn't have any gold and is poor along with his other friends so they decide to become bookies.

Midnight Gold The Rise of the Forgotton Lord YMMV on this one. It has a lot of fanon cliche and at times there are chapters that haven't been edited so the grammar is awful. However, I think the author has flashes of imagination that keep you reading and at least enjoying a good time waster.

Harry Potter and the Path of Indifference is alright if you are okay with the actual BWL being his twin.

Some of these haven't been updated in months, but I made sure they've been updated at some point in 2014.

 

This one isn't too bad. Hasn't updated in a year though.

I'll heartily second that one. The writing is very good - author is a storyteller, for sure. Does "slice of life" very well, and I like the take on Ancient Runes. One of my personal favorites. Not for everyone, though. When it comes down to it, doesn't have much of a plot, at least in terms of overarching conflict.

 

Likely abandoned. The author seems constitutionally incapable of finishing any chaptered work.

 

Oh ya for sure. I doubt the author has a plan for any story beyond what prompted him/her to write it in the first place. His bleach fics were pretty good as well....

 

This one rambles. It's too long, and that puts me off. I'm halfway through the 30th chapter, and my main reaction is, "Oh well... A hundred thousand more words to go."

Also, the H/Hr pairing is terribad. It does get better after a certain point, but the first half of the story is overly focused on it.

Conlaodh's Song is a 60k word, 5-star-rated, heavily-AU story where Neville is the BWL, but Harry, as Dumbledore's apprentice is the star of the show.

It's prequel is also very good, but I didn't think it was what you were looking for.

I completely recommend Conlaodh's Song.

Its completely amazing. With an amazing Harry/Dumbledore relationship. Pure quality.

Then if you've never read anything else by Nmb, do, now. Quality stuff.

They all are bad, most are even worse, but they all are good for a chuckle or two.

EDIT:

Despite that they are bad, I still consider SilverAegis' stories fanfiction classics. 'The New Life' is worth to look at because it spawned not only the above mentioned clones but also influenced the entire indy!Harry genre.

 

Adding on from this, any good ones with a Brother/whatever being the chosen one instead? Was going to make a new topic but this was here and follows the same line.
