It's the same shit as always. Everyone bullies nerds. Sexism is just the new lens through which that happens. It's a label that's easy to accuse someone of and hard for that person to disprove.

Gamers are a large and diverse group of individuals. No one is pretending there aren't any bad apples. But before we look at gamers, I'd like to take a lens to the mainstream media. The casting couch isn't a myth.

Law and Order has taken a pretty massive nosedive the last five years or so. I used to be a gigantic fan, back in the late nineties and the early 2000s, but it's just gone down further and further since the introduction of SVU.

Joe from the Angry Joe Show talked at length about Gamergate in his Top 10 Gaming Controversies video (link goes to when he started talking about GG) he loaded up a few weeks back. I'm not seeing any reference to it in the last few pages, so hopefully it hasn't been brought up before.

Overall I think it's a good entry point for folks who don't know much about GG. He covers its general history, and lambastes both pro and anti sides to this kerfuffle. He makes some strong points about where it could or should go from here as well to have the best effect. He also included a bunch of links in the doobly doo for folks that want some actual data.

I don't necessarily agree with him 100%, but its the closest thing I've found to a neutral take on Gamergate as a whole.

 

I respect his stand point but if I remember correctly, it's been awhile since I last saw the video, he's got some facts wrong and made some assumptions that aren't true.

 

I honestly feel like the link between 'gamergate' and the ethics of game journalism is a toxic one, and that any discussion regarding it has lost any of its merit at this point. I can't imagine many people would take the matter seriously anyway, as a result of the constant mentions of how it originated in the first place.

In my opinion, keeping this thread open has no value, and I only say this because the thread is less about fostering a healthy discussion and more about bitching, for lack of a better term.

 

As long as it doesn't descend into flaming then I see no reason not to leave it alone. If people want to talk about it they should be allowed to so long as they aren't breaking forum rules, and if they were I'm sure a Mod would say something about it.
