I did general handyman work at a girl's school for a while...

Stick to DxD FanFiction. The reality is far less...glamorous.

Considering that Salem's is only female and Hawaii is kinda far away, Male wizards in the east coast USA prolly take more of an international approach to their education.

So...crap. There is a potentially valid reason for a redneck, American wizard at Hogwarts.

Sounds like every other anime. I'm sure I saw at least 5 where the MC went to a formerly all-girl magical school.

I'd just bum around until I'm 16 then perform a ritual of awakening and have the knowledge of Merlin inplanted in my head. Suckers.

But seriously, I'd go to Hogwarts. Best school in the world, or haven't you heard?

Hogwarts is my only option. Would be nice to do a summer exchange at Uagadou though... that dream magic concept sounds really cool.

Bullshit. Oceania/Australasia should get their own school.

Heh, I must be behind on my Pottermore. (Edit: have now seen that it's from Wonderbook: Book of Potions, but some of the material has been replicated inside the new editions of the HP series in the back pages, which makes it canon I guess).

So this means our canonical schools are:

    Hogwarts, Scotland
    Beauxbatons, France
    Durmstrang, Europe (cold location)
    Koldovstoretz, Russia
    Mahoutokoro, Japan
    Uagadou, Africa
    Salem Witches' Institute, USA
    Brazilian school

We know that there's 11 schools total. That's 8 of them accounted for already, and it's absurdly Euro-centric.

    Major areas not covered:

North American wizards if Salem only accepts girls
    Spanish-speaking world
    Australia and NZ
    Indonesia
    Middle East
    India
    China

Not to mention the areas of Europe still not covered by the above (made even worse by Durmstrang not accepting Muggleborns).

This is difficult to make work, given that this is a large proportion of the world's population. My proposed solution:

    - Say Salem accepts wizards too, even though it's explicitly a witches' institute. (Perhaps it's partnered with a wizards' school next door and they're counted together as one)
    - Say all non-British English-speakers go to Salem
    - Say the African school is in North Africa and also accepts students from the Middle East
    - Say European wizards are multilingual (maybe magically assisted) so are fine learning in French, Russian, or whatever language is used at Durmstrang.

The three remaining schools, therefore, are in:

    - China
    - India
    - South America (Spanish-speaking)

There are still significant parts of south-east Asia not covered, and Indonesia, but we'll just have to say they go to China or Japan.

    Finally:

    - Every school is much larger than Hogwarts and is full of different nationalities.

Incidentally, I think the best location for Durmstrang is near Kaliningrad/Königsberg. It would work well if it was German, given the Grindelwald connection and Germany being a major European power like France and the UK, but Germany's current borders aren't cold enough, so it should be further north, into ex-Prussian territory.

Why is everyone so conviced the Salem Witches institute is one of the 11 schools, rather than something else entirely?
I'm curios, I can't find any canonical citations calling it a school, and it doesn't make sense for it to be one in my opinion. Why would there be an all girls magical school?
I think a lot of problems are solved by assuming the salem witches institute is not a school, and there is some other american school that accepts both genders.

That used to be a way out. Indeed, when I first read GoF I assumed Salem's Witches' Institute was a wizarding equivalent of the Women's Institute, and not a school.

But then someone rooted out an interview in which JKR said that we would find out in book 4 where Americans went to school for magic, and Salem is the only candidate.

    Thanks for informing me.
Guess the Americans are even more backwards then I thought.

Given a choice I'd go to Beauxbatons. All those Veela hotties... and they're French! Geographically I'd probably end up in the unnamed oldest magical school.

I feel I should remind you that Fleur being related to a Veela does not indicate that France has any particular concentration of Veela. Indeed, given that they're Bulgaria's national mascot, presumably that's where they're from and most concentrated.

On that issue, given that they're mascots, paraded around like circus animals, I doubt Veela, like werewolves, generally get to go to wizarding schools.

Since Beauxbatons is the only school which we know of that allows Veelas(or rather part Veelas to be precise) I think I'll take my chances.

GOF also says that Hogwarts, Beauxbâtons and Durmstrang are the three largest schools in Europe, implying they are not only ones. Now, that would be many schools just for Europe and very few for the rest of the world.

That's not canon but the French translation at Pottermore clearly states "the 11 main wizarding schools." It would imply that there are other, smaller and less reputed schools for the poor little muggleborns who don't know any better (and for wizards who don't want to cross half a continent to go to school).

It's totally not canon, but since JKR speaks French, I wonder if she had a say about the translation (doubtful, or she would have added that to the original text). Anyway, it's strange that they added this little bit of info, but I find the implications more logical than only having 11 schools in the world (that would make really big schools or many homeschooled people).

    Or...

European empire-building after the 'insititution' of the Statute of Secrecy was accompanied by European wizardfolk destroying the centers of learning and prominent magical bloodlines in areas that resisted compliance.

Also might explain why Hogwarts is so prominent; there really are many more wizards in Northern Europe than anywhere else. Now.

Perhaps homeschooling, tutors or apprenticeships are much more widespread in certain parts of the world.
