So nothing by Ayn Rand is a story? The bible doesn't contain stories?
    Fables with morals aren't stories?
As far as I know no rule states that a story can't have the primary purpose be to teach a philosophy. Many stories have this primary purpose. I would apreciate an explanation as to why, in particular, MOR is not a story.

HPMOR is a serious drama-mystery-humor-rationalistic-fantasy story. It's sometimes silly, sometimes serious, sometimes a parody and sometimes lecturing.
It's not consistent. I (the reader) can't change modes all the time and will interpret everything wrong.

That's the flaw, anyway. I'm sure somebody can pull a mixture of well and I don't think Less Wrong did very badly.

    It updated again.

I might be missing something, but has 'The Line of Merlin Unbroken' been mentioned in this story before?

Nope. Is this... could this possibly be leading up to a sequel?

Or maybe he's just redeeming Dumbledore a bit.

It's been mentioned multiple times, mostly by Draco and in the Wizengamot sequence.

Repeatedly. Its a major plot point. It would have been ridiculous if it wasn't resolved.
It was part of the major foreshadowing that Dumbledore was going to die early on.

I really tried to read this, but much the same as Partially kissed hero, I could only get through the first 10 or so chapters before closing the tab.

Having thought about why this and Partially kissed hero, do nothing for me despite such a rabid fanbase I came to the realisation that I simply cannot read a story/text/whatever you want to call it without being able to empathise with the protagonist. This does not mean that a sociopath or really any overly narcissistic character is unreadable, it means that the characters have to behave somewhat like a human in order to read them.

I firmly believe that almost all shitty fiction features protagonists and antagonists (and just about nothing else) as exaggerated projections from their life, and Hpmor does nothing to dissuade me from that notion. Particularly as in the chapters I read this was expanded to not just include characters but literally every thing that happened in the story as a way for him to show off his intellectual prowess such as it is.

Ultimately I will never be able to enjoy this, or even recommend it.

    1/5

Also, whoever enters a Harry Potter story that retains its magic and then trys to quantify it has completely missed the point of magic.

Asking people to nominate a work of fanfiction for best novel in any real competition seems excessively silly to me. Maybe I have the wrong impression of the Hugos. Or maybe Yudkowsky thinks his story is just that good.

The second paragraph has more promise, but not by much. Giving profits to charity is the only thing that gives it any sort of chance of happening, but I don't think any author (or their publisher) would let someone actually publish a work of fanfiction.

Yes, because of all these stifling copyright laws.

Right, there's absolutely no precedent, like SW EU, WH 40k, or a million other things I could name.

    I agree that it's a long-shot, but that's not to say that it's impossible.

    Ahahaha.

Did anyone call his ego over-inflated? His ego has, in fact, the size of a medium-sized galaxy. MoR nominated for the Hugos and published with JKR's agreement? HAHAHAHAHAHA

    Right.

And if this happens, Unatoned deserves a movie. I will happily vote for that one.

Fanfiction is always under the threat of being shut down through litigation (e.g. Anne Rice, this damn cunt, forbade fanfiction in her 'verses and FFN complied).

yes and but like has he not considered that MoR would rot the HP brand like very few other things could? It is completely derisive of canon, is inordinately unreadably long (manageable in serial but not in whole) and flies in the face of the message canon conveys (w/r/t friendship, virtue ethics, etc.)

why would anyone think exposing JKR to this would be a good idea?
