I honestly wonder where non-pureblood Nordic people go to school. Koldovstoretz and Beauxbatons seem like the only choices, but both are fairly poor fits.

I suppose Beauxbatons. That would also probably make it the largest and most diverse European school.

I would go to the unnamed school in Hawaii.

    Hawaii, looks like.

Man that could get old fast. Seems like a baller place to visit, but living on 6000 square miles surrounded by capital w Water for a long time... eugh.

Hawaii sure would have been nice.

I grew up in a part of Canada where we had to bring the brass monkeys indoors from about November to March.

On Edit: "It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" was (and still is) one of my father's favourite wintertime sayings.

I guess I'd go to Charmbridge Academy. Apparently Salem Institute doesn't take men and I hate the beach.

I'm geographically closest to Harappa, but Indo-Pak tensions is a factor to consider.

Besides, with what education (and the population) is like in India, I refuse to believe that there isn't a public school for magic, with lots of tests and cutthroat competition. And students will inevitably end up as mediwizards or inventors (magical engineers?). Probably located in or around ancient Magadha, where Nalanda operated.

However, are magical India and Pakistan even seperate? I really can't see religious divide coming between groups of people who can conjure water and kill people with a couple of words, but then British wizards celebrate Christmas. It'd be brilliant if Magical India and Pakistan and Bangladesh were all one nation.

Learning in Sanskrit would be a bitch, though. Dead serious. Had to learn it in high school, was the only subject I actually worked at in lower classes. Turning in assigments would suck...so would conversation. It'd be like speaking Latin, with all it's rigid rules and nuances. Nope.

    EDIT:
I read the second sentence and found the word 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.' I will now incorporate this into conversation somehow, as soon as I figure out how the hell it's pronounced.

    EDIT 2:

It's alternatively called 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.' Wow, Welsh Wizards are fucked in duels.

    'LLANFAIRPWWLGWYN -'

    'Avada Kedavra.'

I give up, by the way.

I personally don't think they would be separate. Either that, or they were never united to begin with. The Statute of Secrecy divided the magical world from the Muggle, so presumably Muggle British imperialism would not have equated to magical British imperialism, except in cases of mass migration (America, Australia, etc.).

Also, celebrating Christmas is very possible for non-Christians. It has pagan origins and the majority of what constitutes 'celebrating Christmas' has nothing to do with Christianity at all. I would know, since I'm not Christian but I do celebrate Christmas as a sort of folk tradition.

The whole anti-witchcraft thing in Abrahamic religions would seem to disqualify witches and wizards from them. The modern magical world in canon comes across as being very secular, at least in Britain.

This post was Charlie Brown approved...

Bremen's school, I hear, has both a strong animagus course for 6-7th year students, and a world class music program.

    Seitokai Yakuindomo, for one.

I'd go to Salem Witches Institute which, contrary to the name, has long been co-ed. Then I'd probably get sent home after they determined that a magical learning disability made it unlikely I'd ever pass a single course.

Good grief, even my fantasy life shits on me. :facepalm

The worst one would without a doubt be the Japanese one. From the "no Muggleborns" description alone you can infer it is elitist and probably monoculture. The martial focus doens't help - I mean, meditation, akasha and zen is cool and all for a magical focus, but making everyone practice some form of physical training to learn magic is so - it violates the theme of magic. It's probably the most stressful school as well, considering Japanese culture. They probably do create strong graduates, however.

The amazon school sounds like a bad place to be, but at least you could probably forge your way in there.

The chinese school sounds the most prestigious - I can already imagine the "test" system it'd have in place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_examination

You'd have all these neat magical ranks, instead of the Hogwarts model of pushing people to the next level every year. Like the imperial examination system, you could find child geniuses graduating by 18 or 40 year olds still working on their next rank - it'd create a very diverse learning environment for a good story. You could probably quit school at any time and make your way depending upon the rank you graduate with - only a few ascending to the highest rank, where they probably get high political influence. It'd probably have pretty dynamic conflicts too, likely rich vs poor and Mainland vs Taiwan/former Colonies.

Salem sounds like a fun place for writing a lesbo story but that's probably about it. Maybe you could explore darker themes there but I doubt it. Salem's existence does create an interesting situation - for American young adults, you have a large population of witches with less social experience in the opposite sex.

Egypt/Greek schools sound okay but you're stuck writing to those cultures and I don't know if you could work much diversity in.

Hawaii sounds dumb. I don't even know how you'd produce anything interesting. Basically all American boys must go there and since it's American it's probably a pretty tame school without much in the terms of systems and testing. It's unlikely to have much history since it was recently founded, though the Hawaii natives probably add a little flavor to it (but dear god I can already think of the stupid things you'd have to do, like magical surf boarding).

I wouldn't want to attend any of them. I am sure there are small groups of people who apprentice others. Maybe even organizations like those seen in Fate - Sea of Estray - nomad groups that teach forbidden or forgotten magic. I'd rather learn something esoteric and bizarre than something mass produced and conventional, even if it's less practical or effecient.

I'm also skeptical of the fact most Africans would not go to Egypt for schooling. I'm pretty sure they would, unless they're deep in the south. I think there should also be a school in Ethiopia, given its ancient history.

I'm Israeli so Alexandria I suppose. If the school is in the unplottable Library of Alexandria it could be pretty awesome. I guess instead of Basilisks petrifying students we'll have Mummies buried in a secret catacomb trying to make students into Inferi. The first lessons in Transfiguration would be to turn your wand into a snake, and water into blood.

Great find. I'd love to see something like this as a joke fic, with Harry getting transferred.

I am actually studying in Hogwarts now (but with less magic, and more muggle studies) - there are dreaming spires, great halls and black robes and shit - but believe me, it's not as cracked up as it's supposed to be.

Much rather be at Salem (all girls school? sign me up) or at Mahoutokoro (literally, "Magic Place" - who comes up with these names?).

Hawaii, probably. Or the Chinese School, if they accept people ethnically Chinese but not living in China?

Salem is certainly the closest for me. Or if i'm not allowed to go there, then I guess 'm heading for Hawaii, what a shame. :)

I'm Hogwarts, because British, but it's probably safe to assume that there's other magical schools in the places which seem short. It's just that we British only know about the absolutely most prominent of them because we never meet anyone from the smaller ones.

It's also quite likely that Britain has smaller schools than Hogwarts, as if everyone in the population went to it, there'd only be 5000 wizards in the whole of Britain (assuming Hogwarts population of 300 odd and a mean lifespan of 120). While this might not seem too bad, it would make the Battle of Hogwarts the worst single day in history in terms of percentage killed. 50+ dying fighting Voldemort is over 1% of the population, even if we don't include Death Eater/Ministry casualties, which are likely to be equal if not higher. Bear in mind that Britain lost around 2% of its population in the entire First World War.

In other words, if you want to invent a school for your fic, go for it!

Wasn't an Irish school mentioned in canon, as somewhere Seamus was almost sent, instead of Hogwarts?

That would be two confirmed schools in the British Isles alone.
