I actually found his idea fascinating. It would also give whole magical trunks cliché whole new perspective.

Worst comes to worst, the Department of Mysteries just removes the day from history.

Diresquirrel did an hp/fallout crossover with those themes. It was ok, but it seems to be abandoned now.

Don't wizards take astronomy as a core class for the first five years at Hogwarts? It seems odd that they'd need muggles to know about meteorites.

It is possible to purchase an accurate model of the entire milky way galaxy in Diagon Alley.

I'm pretty sure wizards know their stuff when it comes to space.

Maybe because they work with the symbolic meaning of the position of some luminaries.
A metroid however is a useless piece of rock and ice and I don't believe they have any idea about the size of the fallout after an impact.

Plus I don't like the notion, that wizards have a perfectly logical solution for every disaster. They are lazy and live in their own little bubble. Someone may see the asteroid coming through a telescope, believe it to be very fascinating and move on.

I normally agree with you that you can't make wizards too insular or disconnected normally but a civilization-ender detected six months out would be a big deal. Using Hermione purely as an example I can't see her not still getting a Muggle newspaper and thus being aware of the impending threat and then doing something about it. Really any muggleborn who still paid attention to the muggle world would notice and try to do something about it if the muggles couldn't.

I doubt the wizards are actually searching and I can see some eccentric seeing the asteroid, thinking it was neat and moving on, but in an Armageddon or Deep Impact scenario some wizards would step up.

That was the basis of my original post. Yet I doubt, that a random muggleborn has enough sway to make the wizarding world listen.
This actually makes me wonder about the muggleborns after Voldemort's reign and their persecution. Those who survived will see, that a few Death Eater went scot-free and the underlying resentment will never go away.

    (Randon plot bunny)
Maybe they establish their own little community like the early Chrstians in Rome and insiders in the ministry (Hermione?) to detect young muggleborns to help them along and to teach them new values. This leads to a close-knit minority looking to shake the old order.

The ICW decides that they're getting to the point where there are too many muggles filling up the earth. So in order to deal with this they set up a hoax on par with the Statute of Secrecy.

    They fake an apocalypse.
