Firebird has been pretty good so far, although I'm not overly familiar with the background.

Firebird is kinda allover the place. It has a potential to be good but author seems to be undecided whether jean actually exists inside Taylor or not.

I think it's more along the lines of Phoenix only starts to manifest when Taylor is overly emotional. At this point she's only been out fighting a couple of times and dealing with personal issues/wards/etc.

I think it's rather obvious that some part of Jean is in her with all the changes she's experienced. Maybe not her entire personality, but a lot of her traits have already been expressed in the story.

I'm already reading Firebird, but thanks. Most of the comics I've read are after Phoenix:Endsong, so I personally don't really know the particulars of Jean's personality; I do, however, enjoy the story. I've been staying at my Dad's, and he has thousands of comics; it struck me, while reading an X-23 comic, that her, Jubilee, and Skitter would go well together.

How so? I mean in what way... like the Phoenix-Worm story? or like as a team or something similar?

As a team, if Taylor found herself in the Marvel universe. Not that their powers just mesh well, but they could share in great angst while cleaning up the scum of the world. X had a pretty fucked up childhood, Taylor had fucked up teenage years, and Jubilee is a vampire. A good mix for emotion, feelz, and terror.

Firebird seems pretty decent so far although it feels like Taylor isn't hiding her power all that well.
After the firebird manifestation everyone knows that someone triggered Winslow, and then we have Taylor suddenly standing up to her bullies, and effortless avoiding all their attempts, without looking even ... Suspicious.
and when she preempted what Emma was going to say before there was any hint as to what direction Emma was going, it became even more suspicious.
I'm not sure if the author has everyone, or at least the other POVs so far holding the idiot ball, or whether her telepathic abilities is subtly occluding her from suspicion.
What do you guys think? Mind you, that was after reading the first 4-5 chapters.

I must admit that pretty much completely killed the little enthusiasm I still had for the story.

Falls into the trappings of crack that makes me dislike it since it just ignores all characterization since humor is easier that way, but it is decent enough for failing that.

Crack's fun, but the fun resides in the surprises, the way it violates expectations, the distance between the internal logic of the main story and the internal logic of the crack. Unfortunately, those very violations reset expectations, and pretty soon there isn't any distance left. The funny gets mined out entirely.

In theory, longer runs of crack can be sustained by maintaining uncertainty about whether something is serious or crack, usually by offering multiple viewpoints which are consistent with the evidence. Sustaining a story on that knife edge isn't easy, but it is (I think!) why The Man who Knew Too Little or Irresponsible Captain Tylor work the way they do.

All of which is a roundabout way of asking: why don't fanfic authors try for that balance more often? Make a Wish is one of the few that comes to mind (though that may merely indicate that I should read more).

Heh, Bakuda and Taylor team-up for the win :)
Only the second one where I've seen that happen, I think the first one was Under The Dome, and that one is an Alt-power Taylor (and not a crackfic).
Yea longer crackfics rarely works that well, I think I might prefer a few cracked characters juxtaposed against a non-crack world, I think that would help walking on that knife-edge.
That is also part of the reason Techno Queen stopped working for me, rather than just centering it on Taylor and Dennis, everyone started becoming cracked.

Fic where Taylor is a Kryptonian. I find the idea very interesting but the author isn't skilled enough to pull it off IMO. Uses lots of out of story explanations to try and justify some poor decisions he makes. One is Having Taylor go without a mask on her first night out. It just reeks of some DC stuff that would be better left out.

Ugh. I read it, didn't really like it. The author was way too liberal with his use of 'fuck' used by all characters, especially by Danny yelling at Taylor. And then there's Taylor, just brutally dealing with the ABB gangsters, something Superman would never do. If this is just Taylor with Superman's powers, it should just be a stompfic.

An idea has been rumbling around in my mind for a Supergirl Taylor fic for a while now, but it'd be incredibly hard to pull off. Superman is just way too overpowered. Literally nothing other than writers pulling shit out of their asses should be able to beat him.

Superman is a cultural phenomenon not because of his God-like powers, but in spite of them. The best part about him is his mythos, his idealism, and the character interactions he has with his family and friends. It's the Jesus-incarnate that made people read/watch Superman.

Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son.

    - Superman (1978)

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

    - Man of Steel (2013)

Both directors knew what would make Superman click with viewers. Donner put together Reeves and Kidder and created amazing sexual tension. He made Superman's mission not to be a mindless brute, destroying everyone in his path, but a symbol. Snyder, I think, tried to recreate this and succeeded somewhat, given that much of Man of Steel was about Clark's inner struggles and his initial deep seeded mistrust of humanity.

Taylor might as well just be another Alexandria package given the amount of thought the author has put into the fic and how she's handling her powerset.

Ack, the writer, has previously written smut between Taylor and her father.
