I remembered the first chunk of Hope Comes to Brockton Bay, the part I'd read, as being pure WAFF/wish fulfillment, and when someone linked his Ao3 account I wandered over there expecting more of the same. It's... really not.

Turning to a more productive facet of the topic: I think that smut tends to have an enormous bonus to SoD... among those who share whatever fetishes are in play. Accordingly, few writers bother to 'overinvest', and the result is almost incomprehensible to those who don't have a lust to believe. This is likely exacerbated by the fact that writers are often writing their own fetishes, and so can't see the issue on review/edit.

Hypothesis: in order to write smut that doesn't read disastrously for a wider audience, write it outside one's fetishes. Or maybe look for beta readers who don't share those fetishes? Probably safest to avoid the topic, but that's not a technically satisfying answer.

I think we discussed this when some Harry/Lily fics came out. I think a lot of people seriously weren't writing "someone underage fucks his mother' so much as they were writing "Harry fucks this abstract character I've somehow marked out as hot". It's the Daphne Greengrass thing; they can just attach any look they want to the character.

I've never read Ack's stuff so I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that it isn't pedo smut. She is 15 years old and sexually mature. She is just under the age of consent. Same thing with the Harry/Lilly smutfics. Cant believe I need to say this but you all need to straighten out your creepy-fetish knowledge DLP.

My memory of Taylor's age when they hooked up is fuzzy, but if she was under the age of consent at the time then yes. Technically. Less so in spirit given he was only a couple years older than Taylor. Replacing Grue with a man twice his age, though? Very yes. That was an awful example.

The Grue example was just to point out how arbitrary age of consent is. The creep factor from a relationship between someone in their 40s and a teenager doesn't go away when they reach the magic number 18. Statutory rape can be all manner of creepy, but when victims are actually 'children' it becomes a thousand times more so.
