There are honestly few things I could care about less then gaining respect on the internet. Although, if I had to choose, I'd probably say compatible opinions about the HP world.

A Simple way, is to not make me shank you.

    On the poll, I choose.

    1) IRC Chat; Honestly, I take the fifteen or so people on the chat far more seriously then the people on the general forum, why? Because they can put up with me. The people I know who author get some amount of respect from me, especially if I enjoy their stories, but if they go on the IRC, and I cna interact directly with them, well the respect increases, ot decreased accordingly.

    2) Contribution; Existing isn't a cause for respect.

    3) Wit/Humor/Charisma; Nuff said.

Didn't notice that the title of the thread and the title of the poll were slightly different because, to me, they give different responses.

How to get respect at DLP (in general, not from me - this is how I voted):

Post count, account age, and overall status at DLP ('old crowd', mod, admin etc...)

    Contributions to the fandom (author/reviewer/consumer)

For me, personally (the actual title of the poll which I didn't see):

    - General wit/humor/charisma of the poster and his/hers posts

I don't really care about the others, but without the above, I couldn't care less about the person quite frankly. I can think of many members who have immaculately spellt posts that quite evidently kiss older member's arses or are respected authors but if the lights are out, there's nothing they can contribute.

I personally care if someone can give some constructive criticism, even if it is hard to take. If I can learn something, from the opinion, the example of good writing and originality or pointing out the bad points of a story.
I don't care if the person has two billion points or bashes someone I don't like either.
I like people that show some thinking for themselves and not just blindly bash the character thats the joke of the month.

The three options I chose which help garner my respect are:

    1. IRC because it's much easier to communicate on a somewhat equal level. Because to be honest when I joined there were quite a few bans, which made posting feel like playing russian roulette. One wrong word and I could be gone.

Now having spoken to people on IRC I feel a little braver about voicing my opinions, because it's easier to defuse misunderstandings.

    2. General wit/humour/charisma of the poster and his/her posts.

Mainly because I find it irritating to talk to people in real life with the sense of humour of a plank of wood. Plus someone who gets all whiny over a little teasing/hazing, would be a nightmare to talk to in real life.

I also find it's easier to debate with people if they have enough wit/charisma/humour to realise it's an online debate, because a community (wether online or in real life) is supposed to enrich each other not be self destructive.

    3. Grammar, spelling and thoughtful conduct towards other (older) members of DLP.

I think this is the one that matters to me most on the forum, when someone puts so little thought into their posts. I mean how difficult is it to read a post before you display it to everyone. I can understand if english isn't your first language but people raised in an english speaking environment should know better.

If you can manage to read the Harry Potter books, then you should have at least some grounding in english, enough to post legibly anyway.

Saying age is an excuse doesn't sit too well with me either, as HP was originally classed as a teens book.

Over all though I have great respect for the people who give to the community, wether that's looking after the site, posting fics or writing them. That's not brown nosing it's respecting people who give up a lot of their free time just to entertain us.

Well, I've only been here a few months now, only about half a year, but when I started, people seemed quite a bit more trigger-happy, especially in IRC. Once things settled down a bit, I noticed changes in general. Nowadays, it doesn't seem that newbies (unless they are idiots or trolls) get hazed nearly as much in the chatroom. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.

But to gain my respect, one would have to do one of three things:
    1) Write something that truly is written well and challenges conventional ideas, while remaining open to new ideas.
    2) The ability to remain civil in a heated debate.
    3) Writing intelligently about a controversial and/or complex issue without backing down.

I've seen these things happen a few times.

Oh I miss the "good ole days" when the join rate was slow enough for us to haze every single new poster. Those were fun.

Now I don't bother hazing someone unless they do something that really annoys me.

I know what you mean...those were the days. Back when I wasn't scared to go into the intro threads.
The simple way to make me NOT hate you is:
    1) don't be stupid
    2) don't be disrespectful

It really all comes down posting style, humor, and general personality, but new members with attitudes and big egos will recieve auto-hate from me.

I shamefully admit that I was a big asskisser back in the day, but I think I more than made up for it in my posts. Reputation/Post ratio is also a big factor for me in first glance judging.

Likeability is a major factor for me as well. I don't like assholes.

And lastly, if someone really writes a kickass story, I'll like them automatically. *Prods Thalarian to get to work* Authors tend to be higher in my book.

    :::

Hm, I've noticed people never responded to the "Who do you respect at DLP?" part.

I'd have to say my favorite members (not in any order, just the one I think them up) are:

1.) Thalarian [Funny guy with kickass story. Did I mention Kickass story? And the kickass story? No? Kickass story! And he's cool.]

    2.) Surrarin [Kickass story]

3.) Giovanni [He's just...Giovanni. Look at his fucking posts]

    4.) Xiph0 [Cool on IRC]

5.) Dark_Syaoran [I still have to google/correct his name. He's just all-around full of win]

6.) Yarrgh! [My first reviewer...awwww....Also funny poster]

7.) BMM [Don't know where you are, man, but I miss your humorous posts]

8.) Vash [This will be removed if he doesn't write the Harry/Mermaid story we talked about. But generally for his stories]

9.) LT2000 [Very supportive guy when you need help writing]

    10.) IP82 [Very good author]

11.) ChuckDaTruck [All around win...too much to list]

12.) Litha_Riddle [Very sensible and fair minded]

    13.) Swim_Draconian [My good Beta]

That's all I can think up for now. Sorry to all the people I've missed - I'm exausted.

Steps you can take to be the forum-win:
Be clear. This isn't AOL and you're probably not a twelve year old girl.
[Edit: If you are the latter, take great care to avoid BioPlague and/or Vash.]
Be concise: get to the point, nobody needs to read a twelve page roundabout post.
Be on topic (more often than not, anyway).

    Things to avoid:
Fake posts about your sister dying.
Posting about how you like slash, knowing it will get you flamed.
    Octopussy.

    Edited for massive damage.

If it's old enough to bleed, it's old enough to breed.

How to succeed in the DLP community
1] Come up with a feminine sounding name, iono something like BioPlague or the sound an animal makes like, "meow"
    2] Find Vash
3] Let the good times roll.

    1) IRC Chat

    - Like other people have said, it's much easier to get a feel for ones actual personality (well, internet personality at the very least), and see how smart/dumb they are. And it also helps people relax around others.

    2) Length and quality of reviews for HP fanfiction.

    - Mostly shows a persons intelligence. If you review and say, "Great story!" that's fine, but it's the long and criticizing reviews that help you.

    3) Grammar, spelling...

    - Yeah, this is probably the mostimportant for me. This really tells me how intelligent you are, no matter your age, and if your opinion is worth shit to me. If you don't capiltalize, use your apostrophes, use puncuation...you're an idiot. Of course, if you're from a country that doesn't speak English, it's understandable. Hell, I have respect for those people who aren't native speaking, but still manage to get their point across with maybe a few grammatical errors.

Basically what that all sums up to is: I respect intelligence. I hate idiots.

Post count, account age, and overall status at DLP does matters too. Staying in the forum for a long time with numerous posts tells people that they survive being purge. While it is also true that some of them are assholes (either in a good or bad way), they do give quality posts that shows their intelligence, sense of humour and common sense.

Gaining respect thru compatible opinions gives a bad after taste in my mouth. No matter how right or wrong a person’s beliefs are, there will always be people against it or have a totally different perception on the subject. Not respecting a different viewpoint gives me an impression of a racist.

DLP being an advocate of proper grammar and spelling makes that choice redundant, while thoughtful conduct have always been a must in any proper or should I say intelligent forum.

Wit, humour, and charisma is kind of self explanatory.

Anyway, respect will always be earned, not given; and there will always be those ‘unique’ people who will never respect anyone no matter what you do.
