What the fuck? A play?

Definitely not the news I was expecting to see. Lucky for the people who will be able to see the play live, I guess.

 

If this isn't filmed and put in cinemas for people to watch like all the other pompous plays and musical performances, then JK Rowling has lost her ability to draw water from a rock.

 

She wanted to write a play, so she did. That's cool. But I expect a film adaptation at some point.

And it better be Exorcist!Harry with that title...

Sure, a novel would be nice, but if Jo says that this story works better as a play then I believe her.

Now I have to find a way to see it.

Obviously one of his kids is cursed.

One could guess that the Weasleys will be heavily involved, and probably Bill who is a curse breaker, St. Mungo's might appear, and it will be mostly humorous in nature with quite a bit of nostalgia and maybe a tear or two. It will sell out, and then it will end up coming to DVD and breaking some kind of record in the process.

I'm thinking this is going to be about a squib in the family. Natural biases will show this as an allegory for families with children who have birth defects, and how their limitations don't exempt them from the right to live life to the fullest. Probably tack on something about the power of creativity not being exclusive to wizards.

Thus it will all be non-magical in execution while surrounded by magical things.

 

Hmmm. Maybe. But unless you assume 'cursed' is referring to misfortune rather than an actual physical curse, the title wouldn't quite fit. As is, I don't think there are any canon sources that say a curse can cause squibness (squibbage? squibbery?).

Edit: Was Ariana a squib? If so, I suppose they could go the route of curse causes physical trauma which in turn causes squibness.

 

Ever since the play was first announced back in 2013, they've been saying it's going to examine Harry's life with the Dursleys, as well as the life of Lily and James. That could be so much worthless media speculation, of course, but if it isn't, and it's not a prequel, then a significant part of the play is presumably going to be in flashback, or characters sitting around discussing their past. Possibly Dudley's kid starts doing accidental magic, leading to him trying to get in touch with Harry again?

 

Ariana wasn't a squib. Since Rowling said it isn't a prequel, I don't think it will have anything to do with Harry's childhood.

I also have to raise the possibility that Lupin's lycantrophy affected Teddy in some way, which is the purported curse.

 

No doubt it will go to Broadway after finishing its run at the West End.

As the title has the "Harry Potter and the" format, I assume Harry is the main character. Which means, since it's not a prequel, it must be a sequel. Perhaps an Auror-based storyline?

However, it's possible that they're just using the "Harry Potter and the" format due to brand recognition and it's got nothing to do with Harry.

 

Possible but not probable. I like Atram's notion that it might be Teddy who is the 'cursed' child, but more than likely it has to do with one of Harry's children, probably Albus. Then again, the only thing Rowling said is it is "not a prequel", so it could take place during or before Hogwarts as well.

 

I have decided that I'm going to see this. I will travel to the UK when this comes out and I will see this.

I sincerely hope it's better than it sounds. I can't watch it live, but I will watch a screening of it as soon as I can.
