Since Win 7 will work fine for a few more years, no. Won't touch 10 until then, if ever.

    Microsoft Sees the Light

EDIT (Forgot to change something, nice catch SOTK)

It looks as the MS has backtracked a little.

In truth, it seems this compromise is pretty good. It allows users who know what their doing to tell MS to stop pushing drivers that break their systems, but also keeps security updates coming. I still worry about a few other things, but this is a very good balance between the two.

You tried to make a new thread for that tool?

    Hahahhaha.

Yeah looks good though. Windows 10 should only be forced updates on the core drivers that run Windows 10. I didn't know they thought your GPU was a core update. Thanks guys, didn't want my GPU to get hacked.

Staying with 8.1 despite its issues here. But I'm a pessimist with little faith in MS' ability to get things right without multiple attempts.

Also because Windows Update has never not sucked dicks at not wrecking people's systems, and I don't expect that to change any time soon. Being the family tech support guy when older relatives' boxes get borked because of WU's bullshit gets old fast and I don't feel up to being a bigger man and not wanting to bloodily murder everyone responsible.

    LMAO.

Worse. I thought about it, then said naa, and stuck it here without editing it. It's been a Loooong day. :facepalm

Anyway, yeah, this fix changes things for me. I still wish I could tell the system when to update, or put it off for say, 24 hours at at least, but this change went far enough that I re-upped for Win10.

    Its a good idea.

I hope im not the only one stuck doing endless technical support for friends and family because their xp laptop sp1 has a million viruses and bloatware.

Free update to 10 and mandatory virus protection, edge browser seems secure too with no way to install toolbars.
MS usually dont break things with their updates, they break other peoples shitty software. And their inline apps seem pretty good from the technical preview. If they can ban acer from selling bloatware infected shittops too it would be perfect.

So long as there's a way for us more technical people to block it on pro (and there will be in the registry, if not by localhost rerouting).

The real creepy issues with windows 10 were they in 8, and thats the UEFI bios lockdown.

EDIT: that said, GPU drivers should not be pushed in this way full stop.

I upgraded today because why not. Privacy settings to automatically sync with devices and allow apps to access my account data can be turned off, but they just turn right back on when I look away. Fuck that noise.

Also, it's no longer "Programs and Features" but "Apps and Features." Pure sadness.

Funny. Microsoft Bob. So long ago . . .

So, I now have Win 10 on both my tablet and desktop. I'm quickly learning to like it. I have to revert to my original thoughts, it's what 8.1 always should have been, taking the best of 7 and 8 and putting them together.

While I agree with Zerg, there's no reason to call Programs "Apps," it's a minor thing. Also found out I have Pro, since I had Win 8.1 for students. So I get to control my updates even more than I thought possible (stop them for up to nine months or so).

So, how many of you guys would suggest trying Windows 10 out vs. waiting a few weeks/months?

If you only have one computer, I'd wait a couple of weeks to make sure the common bugs (big and little) are identified and fixed (there aren't too many, as this build has pretty much been out for a few months now; it's just been repackaged as the Official Win 10 and available since yesterday).

If you have more than one so you can do a few searches to find out how to fix something if it breaks, then jump right in. I doubt very much it'll break anything. Make sure you do all your file backups, however, including a DiskImage if you want to go back to your old system.

Personally, all of my computers are running Win 10 now (Desktop, tablet, laptop has the last Pre-release build). I've only had problems with "All Settings" page not being able to open (a very easy and quick fix), and with the actual download itself on my tablet, but I think that was more operator error.

Can someone please explain to me what's this I've heard about ads on Windows 10?

Haven't see any myself. I think what they may be referring to is the popup from the taskbar when Win10 was first pushed out. People could click on it, then choose whether to accept 10 or not. It was rather like an ad, but it's the only thing I've seen, and that was when I still had 8.1.

I upgraded yesterday on my old laptop as a test system, which is 7 years old next week and was running 7 Pro. I have nothing but good things to say about the new OS. So far no stability or error issues, etc.

I messed around with a bunch of the settings to turn off auto-wifi connect on public networks, etc. for security reasons. Changed a few other settings, too. No complaints on that front.

Overall so far, I'd recommend the change. I'll be upgrading my desktop when I get back from the business trip I'm currently on.

I updated from 7. Feels like a theme. Nothing's changed for me regarding general use.

Had to tweak some stuff with 'recently opened' or quick access or whatever that is because pr0n.

Relevant. Turn on some of the better features to tell Microsoft what they can collect and not.

Upgraded to 10, anyone know if you need to keep the windows.old folder that's created if you already have a diskimage made? Or is it something that can be safely deleted.

Reason for asking: Win 10 is on a 128 GB SSD, so the 20 GB that would be freed up by deleting it would be handy.

In any case gotta back up...

And my bookmarks folder for firefox. Really dont want to restart the list. Like the last 3 times I had to wipe my drive.

You can manually force the update.

You won't need to back up your folders, and your bookmarks should be included with the Firefox system files.
